The Children Starve First

I wanted to open a space to reflect on something that’s been haunting me.

I've noticed in reports from Gaza that children are dying of starvation at shocking rates — even more than adults. At first I wondered how this could be, given that children need less food than adults. But I’ve since learned that children are actually the first to die in famine situations.

Here’s why:

  • Children have smaller bodies but higher nutritional needs per kilogram, especially during growth spurts. They need regular, balanced intake to maintain development.
  • Malnutrition hits them faster — their energy stores are smaller, and their bodies have less ability to adapt to a lack of nutrients.
  • Their immune systems weaken rapidly, making them far more likely to die from diseases that an adult body might fight off.
  • Infants and toddlers can’t chew tougher emergency rations or go without water as long, and breastfed babies suffer if their mothers are dehydrated or malnourished.
  • The UN says that in every famine, the first to die are the smallest and weakest.
The stories of babies dying in their mothers’ arms — not from bombs or bullets but from hunger — are unbearable. I can’t stop thinking about the terror and anguish these parents must feel. How helpless it must be to watch your child fade away slowly, knowing you have nothing left to give them.

I know we talk about current events, about war, politics, sides — but surely, we can unite around this: no child should starve to death in their mother’s arms.

Whatever our political opinions, surely no one here thinks children should be starved as a tactic of war, this is a war crime.

I didn't say it did.
But the UK was still attacked by a terrorist organisation many times. It never used that to attack another state. And attack it relentlessly every day since.

But that's how it works on these threads isn't it?
Lots of people here are accused of things they've never said, accused of being heartless and inhuman and a thousand other pithy little insults. One pro gazan poster wanted any voices contrary to their narrative silenced.
Another had such in depth knowledge of the issue she thought Gaza was bordered by Syria and Lebanon.
You tried to draw an analogy between the ira & hamas - there is no comparison.

Because I’m not sure those babies dying in their incubators are aware they’re part of a “death cult”

Edited

Because theyre not, obviously.

Are you saying that Palestinians don’t exist as a people separate to Hamas?

Of course not. That would be silly. There's currently many brave Palestinians protesting against Hamas.

Hamas- a violent terrorist death cult.

Israel- a whole nation of people of many ethnicities currently under an abhorrent right wing administration.

But you hate Israel more.

Got it.

No they couldn't, Israel could have had all the hostages back by now but prefers to use them as an excuse for genocide. No better than the accusation that Hamas is using civilians as human shields.

It's an established fact that Israel is murdering and torturing thousands of innocent people, including babies and children. Yes, I hate Israel. I think it's disgusting what they are doing and the pathetic excuse that it's in self-defense is absolute rubbish. Not only that, but they have been committing atrocities and breaking international law to bully Palestinians for decades. I hate Hamas too but they are not the ones with the power to stop this.

Nothing the IRA did compares to 7/10.

“I sincerely hope 14% of posters don't agree with children being starved to death.” We have lost our humanity.

I think from some of the responses it’s clear they consider it at least a necessary evil. It’s sick.

OK. Thanks for answering.

I dont agree that we are responsible for what happens in Gaza. I think Hamas are firstly responsible for what happens in Gaza. Israel are next responsible. Israel is a sovereign nation and like all nations makes it's own choices on defence.

I just can't understand why there's thread after thread of hatred for Israel / Israeli actions but no same thread of hatred for Hamas or calls for Hamas to surrender. It's just all on Israel.

And I know they're terrorists, but they are also the government of Gaza and they could also end it tomorrow. Thats what would be best for Gaza. They're also just men. Like Netanyahu. Just men, subject to the same morals as each other. They could end it too, and let Gaza find new leadership that doesn't see its own people as sacrifices.

Thats what I hope for anyway.

Yes, October 7th was horrendous. But what about every day since? How many more horrendous days against an entire people will we see?

The UK had extreme acts of violence carried out by the IRA a generation ago but it was never used as a rationale to bomb Ireland, another state. And what bombs are being used now!!

Nothing the IRA did compares to 7/10.

Igotjelly · 22/05/2025 21:34

Or do you think their actions are acceptable?

Igotjelly · 22/05/2025 21:33

quantumbutterfly · 22/05/2025 21:01

If you post hate speech or support for a proscribed terrorist group.....them's the breaks .

Saying that Israel is bombing innocent civilians into oblivion is not glorifying a prescribed terrorist group, it’s stating an objective fact. Oct 7th was awful and Hamas as an ideology had no place in civilised society but nothing justifies the actions of the Israeli government.

Feeling empathy and wishing an end to the torture and suffering of the innocent Palestinian people is not support for a terrorist group or a snub to the horrors of October 7th.

Well, I agree that it seems unlikely right now. And I agree Israel should let the aid in, even if it means Hamas get their filthy hands on it.

I try to have hope that there will be a solution one day, other peoples have been oppressed and come away from it. Awful wars have happened and peace has come. Humans can be both absolutely monstrous and amazingly noble. It just takes the right leader and vision.

100% there is always a way. You do need the right people though.

You might blame Hamas for what’s happening. I blame the international community. The Arab countries should have come forward with a plan sooner. Israeli allies should have started off calling for restraint and progressed to action at least a year ago. They were all counting on the US doing some finger wagging.

Now we are at a point where Gaza is unliveable and even the Israeli government are expressing surprise that the world hasn’t stopped them.

Do people actually want to see starving babies as proof?

The people who want to see starving babies as proof will never be satisfied by the evidence. They will claim the images are doctored or ai or similar. People can excuse anything if they really want to

dairydebris · 22/05/2025 20:39

Odras · 22/05/2025 20:22

@dairydebris i think it is an unlikely hope. Even If Hamas folded tomorrow, there seem to be other militias in Gaza who would be only happy to harness the anger around them and step into power. When people are oppressed, you will always find those willing to fight.

Ideally, the Palestinians would be offered a peaceful, political path to their own state. Even Witkoff seems to largely agree with the Arab plan not this Israeli plan.

Not that I think that is likely either. I think our best bet at this stage is to hope that Israel gets so much external and internal pressure that it is forced to provide aid. All of the aid necessary to avert a catastrophe.

Well, I agree that it seems unlikely right now. And I agree Israel should let the aid in, even if it means Hamas get their filthy hands on it.
