The Children Starve First

I wanted to open a space to reflect on something that’s been haunting me.

I've noticed in reports from Gaza that children are dying of starvation at shocking rates — even more than adults. At first I wondered how this could be, given that children need less food than adults. But I’ve since learned that children are actually the first to die in famine situations.

Here’s why:

  • Children have smaller bodies but higher nutritional needs per kilogram, especially during growth spurts. They need regular, balanced intake to maintain development.
  • Malnutrition hits them faster — their energy stores are smaller, and their bodies have less ability to adapt to a lack of nutrients.
  • Their immune systems weaken rapidly, making them far more likely to die from diseases that an adult body might fight off.
  • Infants and toddlers can’t chew tougher emergency rations or go without water as long, and breastfed babies suffer if their mothers are dehydrated or malnourished.
  • The UN says that in every famine, the first to die are the smallest and weakest.
The stories of babies dying in their mothers’ arms — not from bombs or bullets but from hunger — are unbearable. I can’t stop thinking about the terror and anguish these parents must feel. How helpless it must be to watch your child fade away slowly, knowing you have nothing left to give them.

I know we talk about current events, about war, politics, sides — but surely, we can unite around this: no child should starve to death in their mother’s arms.

I don't know why Egypt doesn't do more anyway.

Sorry I don't buy that pick.they would never shoot down USA, UK planes

Then you are very naive
They have literally shot dead British and European aid workers and charity workers even way way before Oct 7
They do not value any human life
If you say anything in support of Palestinians you are immediately anti- semitic
Sick of Israel and it's choke hold on the West
End genocide now

@Stripes56 I fear the war has emboldened Netanyahu & his government to the extent that they believe they will be able to implement Trumps plan or a version of it.

Personally I doubt the Israel leaders can imagine a peaceful two state solution after the war. Even before October 7th there was a lack of trust, hence all the money Israel spent on defensive measures like the Iron Dome. But now Hamas have managed to get past their defences & massacre 1,200 Israeli citizens… I think that’s the end to any hope that Palestine & Israel can co-exist peacefully.

Hope I’m wrong though.

Stripes56 · 24/05/2025 10:13

@Twiglets1
It would be great if Hamas could be eradicated from Gaza.

But somehow I don’t think that this would stop the ethnic cleansing of Gaza. After all - it seems to be happening in the WB with no action from police. Do you think this is going to promote peace with Palestinians?

Possibly, though I still see a lot of sympathy for Israel's situation.
Neighbouring Arab leaders were disgusted by what they were shown of 7/10 and would probably have dealt with the situation more brutally, with no risk of dissenting voices internally.
Slightly surprised that hamas leaders are managing to avoid the shit sticking to them especially after the remarks about breeding more martyrs.

Hamas leaders are getting some shit but more from within Gaza by Palestinians than on UK sites like Mumsnet. Article from the BBC about protests in Gaza:

Palestinians have taken to the streets in southern Gaza for a third day to protest against Hamas.

Hundreds of demonstrators were seen in videos posted on social media calling for an end to the war and for the removal of the armed group from Gaza. "Out! Out! Out! All of Hamas, out!" they chanted.

Speaking out against Hamas can be dangerous in Gaza and threats circulated on journalists' WhatsApp groups on Tuesday, forbidding them from publishing any "negative news that could affect the morale of the people".

Activists said young people started the protests on Monday and were joined by others on their way to get food from community kitchens, who were still holding their pots.

The protesters directed their anger at Hamas's leadership after an interview with senior official Sami Abu Zuhri circulated on social media.
Speaking on a podcast which originally aired in late March, he said that the war with Israel was "eternal", adding: "We will rebuild the houses and produce dozens more babies for each martyr."
Videos from the protests in Khan Younis show young men criticizing Hamas for selling their "blood for a dollar… To those with Hamas, be aware the people of Gaza will dig your grave".

Haven't seen that many starving Hamas foot soldiers. Obviously Hamas are making sure the food reaches the 'right' people first.

ScrollingLeaves · 24/05/2025 00:55

Around 450 protesters [Israeli] called for an end to the war and the return of the hostages at the Sha'ar Negev intersection, near the border with Gaza. Protesters held signs and pictures of children killed in the Gaza Strip.
(Haaretz)

I saw this on Channel 4 News. The Israeli protesters were holding up many enlarged photographs of little, killed Gazan children. One young man was an IDF officer refusing to fight anymore even though he will be punished. A counter protester who came up shouting at them was led away by police.

Channel 4 News tonight is worth watching for the start which is about Gaza. The ex president of Israel, President Olmert came on. He does not blame Starmer, Macron, etc for their criticism of the present Israeli government which he shares.

You need to press ‘Restart’. Or watch it on Channel 4+1 now.

Disgusting. Always crying the victim narrative.

Defending Israel when there is no justification for the terror they are inflicting on the Palestinians.

How long did the October 7th attack last? How many victims? How long has the genocide been going? How many victims? October 7th was atrocious but you can't equate the two

97% of the deaths since October 7th are Palestinian - Netanhayu qouted the bibilical Amalek - that was the plan.

God tells King Saul, through the prophet Samuel:
“Now go and strike Amalek and devote to destruction all that they have. Do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.” (1 Samuel 15:3)

MummytoE · 23/05/2025 18:09

quantumbutterfly · 23/05/2025 14:47

Indeed. Not to mention the kids in the kibbutzim and the nova festival, and the bomb shelters. Or the kids left in cars on the highway after their parents had been killed by roaming gunmen. The kids who thought hiding in portaloos or ambulances at a music festival would save them !!! The kids who hid in abandoned cars at the festival site because there was nowhere to go and were found by civilian looters who handed them to gunmen or killed them themselves.

It's a bloody horror show and I can't get over the fact that people in my country and others celebrated it and still feel that way.

Igotjelly · 23/05/2025 17:37

The only way you get rid of an ideology like Hamas is through generations of peaceful coexistence and education or outright extermination. Given some seem to think every person in Gaza holds such ideology can we safely assume they support the annihilation or imprisonment of the whole population? I hear talk of moving them elsewhere and ethnically cleansing the strip, if the whole place is a death cult surely that just moves the problem?

Igotjelly · 23/05/2025 17:32

The shit may well have stuck more to Hamas (as it should of course) had the Israeli government’s response not been so horrifically barbaric. The whataboutary on this thread are unreal. Should Oct 7 have happened, absolutely not. Should justice be served, yes. Should that just look like massacring women and children, absolutely fucking not.

Those shouting about us not blaming Hamas enough, do you honestly think the actions of the Israeli government and army are justified? Do you think the actions of settlers are justified? Do you think the arbitrary detention of men without charge is justified?

I thought aid trucks are going in, it’s been on the news. Not enough but they are going in.

It's a drop in the ocean considering how long the blockade has been and how little has gone in. No aid has reached the north of Gaza.

I think that goes without saying.

Some posters like to accuse other posters of words they haven’t said or even intimated in their posts though.

I think it’s odd that on a parenting site, in particular, there are over a thousand threads obsessing over a war in a far away country, repeating every little bit of SM propaganda, and dedicated for the most part in vilifying the only Jewish State, which was the victim of one of the world’s worst terrorist attacks and which started this war, and labelling their Army predominately made up of young Jewish soldiers, monsters.

vilifying the only Jewish State
No! Vilifying the Israeli government, their actions and their far right extremist politicians. No countries actions, policies and governments should ever be above criticism and using the fact that it is a Jewish state as a get out clause is pathetic.

labelling their Army predominately made up of young Jewish soldiers, monsters.
No! Labelling their soldiers that are carrying out war crimes monsters. The ethnicity of the soldier dropping bombs, sniping kids, blocking aid is irrelevant.

Nice try with your DARVO no one is buying this any more.

Why has someone voted that you are unreasonable? On a parenting site someone thinks you are unreasonable for saying no child should starve to death in their mother's arms. Mind boggling

A UN official said whilst he drove through Gaza last week, he could see thin and malnourished Palestinians desperately pointing towards their mouths, indicating they were hungry. I find this so harrowing when there are nine thousand trucks of aid waiting at the border which haven't been given permission by Israel to enter.

If these are adults, where does that leave the children who deteriorate much quicker?

They have been witnessing women giving birth whilst starving and the hospitals don't even have any food to feed them. The miscarriage rate has risen drastically because of hunger and trauma.

How can anyone with a sound mind vote that the OP is unreasonable?

Well not really surprising as Hamas as the bad guys were not the focus of the war from the beginning, even in the immediate aftermath of Oct 7th. Israel was. It’s almost as if Oct 7th never happened.

What were the chants at the mass global protests within days? They weren’t calling for Hamas to surrender.

I’ve even read comments that Israel had no right to retaliate!

Which many, many people see and disagree with. It's not an organised movement in the same way as the anti-Israel mob is, it didn't feel necessary as a majority opinion, the last 594 days have been an eye-opener.

I really believe Hamas had no illusions about the response their actions would provoke from the Israeli leadership, much of its population, and its supporters and that was precisely the point. Their tunnels, weapons, and stockpiles of food were designed to support a long-term guerrilla war, with the stated aim of either victory or martyrdom. Hamas has explicitly declared that all civilians who die in the conflict are martyrs and has celebrated their deaths as such.

Therefore, the harder Israel prosecutes this war and the more its actions impact innocent civilians the more it ultimately plays into Hamas's strategy. The resulting erosion of global support for Israel is already significant and could have profound long-term consequences.

7/10 was unique. 9/11 was unique.
The UK has experienced nothing on that scale or barbarity. (even considering 7/7 and Ariana Grande - and one of those was home-grown inflamed by rhetoric- the government would have had to attack northern England, some might say it does in it's own way)

Oh for god sakes no one is celebrating October 7th here. It was an atrocity, clearly. It does not however excuse what has happened since. Surely no one can say the Israeli response has been proportionate.

Yes apparently God was invoked a lot. God hasn't given their opinion on the matter though, I don't think they want to get involved.
