The Children Starve First

I wanted to open a space to reflect on something that’s been haunting me.

I've noticed in reports from Gaza that children are dying of starvation at shocking rates — even more than adults. At first I wondered how this could be, given that children need less food than adults. But I’ve since learned that children are actually the first to die in famine situations.

Here’s why:

  • Children have smaller bodies but higher nutritional needs per kilogram, especially during growth spurts. They need regular, balanced intake to maintain development.
  • Malnutrition hits them faster — their energy stores are smaller, and their bodies have less ability to adapt to a lack of nutrients.
  • Their immune systems weaken rapidly, making them far more likely to die from diseases that an adult body might fight off.
  • Infants and toddlers can’t chew tougher emergency rations or go without water as long, and breastfed babies suffer if their mothers are dehydrated or malnourished.
  • The UN says that in every famine, the first to die are the smallest and weakest.
The stories of babies dying in their mothers’ arms — not from bombs or bullets but from hunger — are unbearable. I can’t stop thinking about the terror and anguish these parents must feel. How helpless it must be to watch your child fade away slowly, knowing you have nothing left to give them.

I know we talk about current events, about war, politics, sides — but surely, we can unite around this: no child should starve to death in their mother’s arms.

There must be a special place in hell for people causing that.

but do crack on with the accusations.

I was under the impression they thought they were going to paradise
So who were you referring to here ? Me and others assumed it was the starving children that the post you were responding to mentioned, if that's not the case you may want to clarify so people are not accusing you in the wrong. I only respond to what you post.

And how many are children.

Films of starving babies on Sky news tonight. There must be a special place in hell for people causing that.

You have revealed how callous and dismissive you are to the deaths of children, frankly it's disturbing. So I'm not sure who YOU are accusing of being easily influenced it's clearly you by Netanyahu and his genocidal rhetoric

Do you honestly believe that the entire population of Palestine are Hamas members? Really?
Was the entire Catholic Northern Irish population IRA members?
And actually - are you a real person? Are you a parent?
(And again, for the third time, please don't infer from my posts).

Is that what I said?
No.
You're extrapolating meaning that just isn't there.

Hamas have a lot to be guilty of, and so have Israel. But at this point, with Hamas decimated - can’t see why Israel needs to allow such little aid into Gaza. Doesn’t seem a necessary military tool.

I agree with your point about humanitarian aid and am relieved that belatedly they are now allowing aid back into Gaza. It does need to be increased though.

Does the blame lie only with international governments? None at all with Hamas?

For what’s happening right now? I largely blame the allies of Israel yes, for letting it get to this.

Hamas are a terrorist group. Israel always overreact. The only people acting inexplicably for me are Israeli allies and the Arab countries who should have proposed a plan sooner. The rest was predictable.

Stripes56 · 24/05/2025 22:48

Only if you’re determined to blame Israel for everything even Hamas not protecting their own people but rather keeping them impoverished and now at war.

How far do you want to take this? Shall we blame Netanyahu for allowing millions into Hamas’s hands..
Or further back…

I didn't think hamas and palestinian islamic jihad recruited from the christian community. 'Christian' militia used to be a thing in Lebanon but no longer I think.

Hamas were stealing aid long before the war started. It shouldn’t have been sparse at that time as millions of pounds worth was being donated by the international community and sent into Gaza. However, Hamas did loot a lot of it and it’s plain to see where it went - on underground tunnels networks and weapons - while the local people remained trapped in poverty.

There would be zero starvation at this current time if Hamas hadn’t planned & carried out the 7th October massacre.

There are Palestinian Christians too. Always amazes me how they're not the right type for the American support. It's just racism.

As I have said before my blame lies firmly with international governments. They knew there was an extremist element in the Israeli government. They knew the military strength of Gaza and the control over their borders.

When it’s over, they’ll say they were always against it.

I can’t quite fathom how some posters seem incapable of accepting that both Hamas and the Israeli administration can be equally at fault for the plight of the Palestinian civilian population.

It’s a good thing if you can understand that both sides are at fault for the current crisis.

I do too though we disagree about which side is most at fault.

Israel could continue the bomb the sh** out of Gaza without stopping the aid, so for this - they are purely at fault.

Aid would not be a racket on the black market if it was not sparse. It would not be worth Hamas stealing it - the Hamas that are left…

Yes Hamas have broken plentiful laws but they are not responsible for children reaching the point of starvation at this exact time.

Israel were wrong to withhold humanitarian aid for so long & I’m not defending them for doing that. They have quite rightly had to bow to international pressure to reintroduce aid into Gaza.

But if we’re talking about who is most responsible for the current suffering in Gaza, my view ( & that of many others) is that Hamas are more responsible.

It’s a contentious issue and obviously people disagree, though some can see both points of view.

Gaza has always relied on aid
Netanyahu was always going to do this
He and his Government are the only ones to blame

Heres his plans just two weeks before October 7th 2023
^^

I know that Gaza has always relied on aid, that’s why I said they quite rightly had to bow to international pressure to reintroduce (not introduce) aid into Gaza.

You can say that Netanyahu and his government are the only ones to blame but that’s your opinion not a fact.

Some people would say that only Hamas apologists would absolve them from any responsibility at all for the current crisis in Gaza but that’s just their opinion too.

quantumbutterfly · 24/05/2025 22:20

But @Twiglets1
That’s why we have laws- that tell us what is right and wrong…
It’s so clearly wrong of Israel that it’s the one thing the international community agree and clearest suggestion of Israel breaking international law.

Or you could look at it like if Hamas hasn’t started the war on October 7th & then refused to release all the hostages together, there would have been no interruption to aid and no starving children.

So as I said, people disagree on who is responsible.
