The Children Starve First

I wanted to open a space to reflect on something that’s been haunting me.

I've noticed in reports from Gaza that children are dying of starvation at shocking rates — even more than adults. At first I wondered how this could be, given that children need less food than adults. But I’ve since learned that children are actually the first to die in famine situations.

Here’s why:

  • Children have smaller bodies but higher nutritional needs per kilogram, especially during growth spurts. They need regular, balanced intake to maintain development.
  • Malnutrition hits them faster — their energy stores are smaller, and their bodies have less ability to adapt to a lack of nutrients.
  • Their immune systems weaken rapidly, making them far more likely to die from diseases that an adult body might fight off.
  • Infants and toddlers can’t chew tougher emergency rations or go without water as long, and breastfed babies suffer if their mothers are dehydrated or malnourished.
  • The UN says that in every famine, the first to die are the smallest and weakest.
The stories of babies dying in their mothers’ arms — not from bombs or bullets but from hunger — are unbearable. I can’t stop thinking about the terror and anguish these parents must feel. How helpless it must be to watch your child fade away slowly, knowing you have nothing left to give them.

I know we talk about current events, about war, politics, sides — but surely, we can unite around this: no child should starve to death in their mother’s arms.

According to the poll so far at least two people think YABU to think no child should starve to death.

Who the fuck are these people apart from an absolute disgrace to humanity.

I think what I’m struggling with so much is that it’s an entirely man made famine. It could be stopped tomorrow but it won’t be.

Why has someone voted that you are unreasonable? On a parenting site someone thinks you are unreasonable for saying no child should starve to death in their mother's arms. Mind boggling

I agree with you OP but i can't understand why isn't anything being done? I can't understand why our government hasn't cut ties with Israel after their cruel treatment of starving Palestinian children.

YANBU. It's monstrous.

Waiting for the Israeli apologists to jump in, I can't think of any other reason for someone voting for YABU.

Every time I go to feed my children, i think of the parents in Gaza who can't.

Seeing genocide unfold in real time is beyond my comprehension.

Actually very few people in these situations die directly from malnutrition. They are much more likely to die of infectious disease as a result of their immune systems being severely weakened. Children are particularly susceptible to these infections - and even if a disease doesn't kill them outright it sets up what is known as the "vicious cycle" of infection (diarrhoea, measles, chest infection) leading to further malnutrition, leading to further infection until finally they die.

It’s horrific, I have found it so distressing reading and watching these reports. I cannot believe that so little is being done. I know aid supposedly is now getting through but it’s much too little much too late. Children being purposely starved and yet the whole world just watches on.
