The Children Starve First

I wanted to open a space to reflect on something that’s been haunting me.

I've noticed in reports from Gaza that children are dying of starvation at shocking rates — even more than adults. At first I wondered how this could be, given that children need less food than adults. But I’ve since learned that children are actually the first to die in famine situations.

Here’s why:

  • Children have smaller bodies but higher nutritional needs per kilogram, especially during growth spurts. They need regular, balanced intake to maintain development.
  • Malnutrition hits them faster — their energy stores are smaller, and their bodies have less ability to adapt to a lack of nutrients.
  • Their immune systems weaken rapidly, making them far more likely to die from diseases that an adult body might fight off.
  • Infants and toddlers can’t chew tougher emergency rations or go without water as long, and breastfed babies suffer if their mothers are dehydrated or malnourished.
  • The UN says that in every famine, the first to die are the smallest and weakest.
The stories of babies dying in their mothers’ arms — not from bombs or bullets but from hunger — are unbearable. I can’t stop thinking about the terror and anguish these parents must feel. How helpless it must be to watch your child fade away slowly, knowing you have nothing left to give them.

I know we talk about current events, about war, politics, sides — but surely, we can unite around this: no child should starve to death in their mother’s arms.

@Snickersnack1 I am not saying food aid shouldn't happen it should; but explaining why food aid frequently does not reach the intended recipients. Also when in dire circumstances if a child appears to be dying the decision maybe taken not to give them the food but the other children who are stronger and will have a better chance. Just like when multiple very serious injuries in th hospitals you need to concentrate on those that stand a decent chance of survival rather than those who probably won't make it anyway, It is truly awful, that such decisions have to be made

We already reached that place a long time ago. Now we just need the answer bit about not starving children.

Absolutely.

I just think the World needs to get to a place where Oct 7 is resoundingly condemned as a horrific terror attack and where true antisemitism is completely rejected but where the answer doesn’t include starving children to death and bombing civilians into oblivion.

not just in this conflict but in many others and indeed when crops fail often what happens is food aid is not given to children but siphoned off to feed the army or fighting men or it is only given to people who support the "correct" side, or when it is dropped the weak have no chance of getting to it so those slightly stronger get it as arrive first. or any food is given to the worker in the family so they can carry on trying to earn money as if not strong enough to work the whole family not just one child will be in even worse straits. You have to be fit and strong to push to the front of the queue by the Aid lorry

That’s an argument for sending lots and lots and lots of food then, isn’t it?

Actually very few people in these situations die directly from malnutrition. They are much more likely to die of infectious disease as a result of their immune systems being severely weakened. Children are particularly susceptible to these infections - and even if a disease doesn't kill them outright it sets up what is known as the "vicious cycle" of infection (diarrhoea, measles, chest infection) leading to further malnutrition, leading to further infection until finally they die.

And yet, others argue about what is or isn't antisemitic. I've reached the point where that takes second place to children being starved to death.

Netanyahu did what he did, because of what Hamas did. Not to stay in power and to stop him being arrested for corruption. Oh no, not him. He wouldn't be so venal 😏

I care more that children are being starved to death than the reasons why.

And yet, last time I looked 14% of people think opening poster is being unreasonable.

I sincerely hope 14% of posters don't agree with children being starved to death.

I don't know why Egypt doesn't do more anyway.

Sorry I don't buy that pick.they would never shoot down USA, UK planes

Israel have taken control over the Egyptian crossing into Gaza.

Igotjelly · 21/05/2025 21:23

Kakeandkake · 21/05/2025 21:21

I'm guessing without permission any planes/carriers with aid would be shot down by Israel.

Well given that they shot towards European diplomats in the West Bank today I think that’s a safe assumption!

Snickersnack1 · 21/05/2025 21:21

It’s sickening and an utter disgrace.
I think the US are the only country who have real influence over Israel, but my God I wish we were doing more.
Netanyahu is a terrible man. The Israelis need to get rid of him, and fast.

How can Israel ban air drops?

heidyho · 21/05/2025 21:21

Absolutely horrific , those poor little tots and their Mums . It's devastating 😢 the world is absolutely evil. And all we hear from Israel is excuses about Hamas.

fisherlong · 21/05/2025 21:21

It is beyond my comprehension!

Presumably they would shoot them down.

borisjohnsonsforgottencondom · 21/05/2025 21:19

I agree OP. Is there a reason why isn’t aid able to go through Egypt whilst all this is going on? I know there’s a lot of political crap but surely a focus on this could sort things out quicker for the children in Gaza?

Thelostjewels · 21/05/2025 21:19

Igotjelly · 21/05/2025 21:18

It’s that old adage of all it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.

Municipal · 21/05/2025 21:15

Why aren’t they airdropping like they did last year. I remember a lot of countries air dropped even the UK

Israel has banned them from doing so.

ButterfliesnWaterfalls · 21/05/2025 21:17

Disgraceful. The world watches on.

Nothing being done 😔

What kind of psychotic monster would block Aid, that was going towards starving Children and Babies.
Netanyahu and his government will be remembered in history as Genocidal thugs. His Imperialist ambitions are without end - he is happy to kill every child in Gaza, so he clings into power.
His behaviour, and the behaviour of those supplying Arms and money is a stain on the world.

Igotjelly · 21/05/2025 21:14

Kakeandkake · 21/05/2025 21:11

This is what I don't understand, why isn't it being stopped? I genuinely want to know. Surely children are innocent regardless of their ethnicity. Why are Palestinian children being starved and no leaders are stopping it?

My only guess is because they have Trump's support to starve them?

If not his tacit support they have apathy from the US government. The Palestinian people have been so dehumanised for so long.

Kakeandkake · 21/05/2025 21:11

Igotjelly · 21/05/2025 21:09

I think what I’m struggling with so much is that it’s an entirely man made famine. It could be stopped tomorrow but it won’t be.
