Gary Lineker - he really had to go and a warning t against virtue signalling

Maybe Gary Lineker's departure acts as a warning for this not acquainted with history to go around randomly reposting pro Palestinian links though I suspect he is not the only one. In a way it is a sad demise to a career but an absolutely necessary one and a timely warning that a proportion of P Palestinian supporters are anti semites.

for to say I didn't like the Gaurdian 's take that the BBC were looking to sack Gary anyway and he just have them an excuse.

Netanyahu is a monster. There is no doubting that. What is happening is awful.

BUT, you have to ask yourself why people choose only this cause to re-post about when there are other absolute atrocities and tragedies occuring both currently and in the past.
I have friends on social media who are reposting anything they come across regarding that is anti israel, yet never anything else about any other humanitarian crisis / war etc.
You HAVE to ask yourself why people choose this cause over others. More & rife propaganda and media coverage yes. (Lets not forget that there are 0.2% of Jews compared to 23% Muslims in this world) but I cannot help but question why my friend chooses to care so much more about a Palestinian child than a Sudanese. Ignorance? Or Bias? Or worse, Anti Senitism?

@Alltheprettyseahorses
No sane person should « feel better » as children will be dying. Can imagine the horror at even one preventable death from starvation in a Western country?

It is categorically not true that 14000 babies will die of malnutrition before the end of whatever is supposed to be left of the alleged 48 hours. That should make you feel better, not drive you to a tirade of frustrated abuse. How dare you compare me to a holocaust denier or call me evil for pointing out the blatant lie. I sometimes think some people want the histrionic horrors to be true.

It wasn’t fake news as in there is no truth in the concern due to the danger and urgency of the situation.

It was Tom Fletcher (who works for UN in co-ordinating relief) desperate to let the world know how dire the situation is in Gaza. He should have said this aid needs to get there asap- ideally with 48 hours. The 14,000 is projected figure of aid doesn’t get in.

Not sure why this should come as a significant relief to anyone - the situation is still risking the lives of young children.

« We're now hearing from mothers in Gaza, who tell BBC Arabic's Middle East Daily programme that they’re "watching their children grow weak from hunger".
Shahinaz, a mother of two, says she her seven-month-old baby "screams constantly from hunger".
She explains that her baby’s immune system is very weak and her daughter is suffering from a calcium deficiency. "No-one is able to help us in our suffering," she adds.
Fatima Khamis, a mother of two young children, shares that she can no longer produce breast milk, and baby formula is either unavailable or unaffordable.
"My baby's face is pale from hunger, and he is severely weak," she says, adding that the "root cause - lack of food and proper nutrition - remains".
A third mother, Hana Mahmoud Ismail, says the lack of food during her pregnancy affected her baby’s development.
"He still cannot sit up, and his teeth have not yet started to come in," she said of her five-month-old son.«

UN says no aid distributed so far in Gaza today, as UK suspends Israel trade talks

It comes as UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy warns that Israel's war in Gaza is entering a "dark new phase".

A balant lie and fake news was about 40 beheaded babies – which the Israeli government press office since confirmed to Le Monde was not true – was potent and emotive.

'40 beheaded babies': Deconstructing the rumor at the heart of the information battle between Israel and Hamas

On October 10, official Israeli accounts relayed a sordid but unfounded allegation. Six months later, it continues to circulate, fueling accusations of Israeli disinformation.

Just like those who deny the holocaust.
It is real. Very real.
These events show how the human race can be so evil.

Some people who were already antisemitic have decided it's ok to voice it now. We've seen them, we've heard them, some of them have learned to be a bit more careful with their words after being called out. I've heard 9/11 being blamed on Israel, even on here. Social media has allowed existing prejudice to be amplified...

It is undeniable that antisemitism has increased since 7/10.

I’m not suggesting that the Jewish diaspora are in anyway to blame for what’s happening in Israel.
I wouldn’t even expect them to call out Israel. I can understand why there is a mixed response when Jewish leaders do criticise Israeli actions- although I feel that this may help mend bridges at a difficult time. These leaders are very brave.

Lord Levy spoke eloquently on World at One today. I feel this can only help reduce antisemitism but also appreciate this should not be required.

‘It is so difficult to watch the news and see what’s going on in Gaza, to the civilian population, to innocent children and the total destruction —and then to listen to the words of some of the far-right ministers, Smotrich, Ben-Gvir, and what they are saying. That, to me, is not the way I was brought up as a Jew.”

www.jewishnews.co.uk/lord-levy-former-mid-east-envoy-backs-david-lammy-on-israel/

I can understood anger directed at GL but it feels that it is an anger that is trying to find an easy target as it’s easier than saying pictures of starving children are a PR disaster for Israel.

Is it? I find anyone who doesn’t condemn Hamas atrocities reprehensible. The same for the actions of the IDF-whether Jewish or not. Anybody who is not outraged that there are 14000 babies 48 hours from death from starvation (UN figures) is not a person deserving any consideration whatsoever.

Completely different than specifically asking Jewish people to comment on the actions of Israel.

How often do we expect Muslims to speak out about the atrocities committed in the name of Islam? We don't because not every Muslim is implicated by those actions and it's the same for Jews surely

People sure were gunning for Muslims after the Southport killings, I'll never forget the mumsnet threads at that time, it was disgusting as soon as 1 anti Muslim thread was deleted another one was created. Riot police had to be called to try and stop people attacking a mosque. It was an absolute frenzy. So yes some people definitely do hold Muslims responsible for the actions of not just Muslims but for the actions of anyone who isn't white. They shouldn't but it is disingenuous to say that people don't.

confusedaboutetiquette · 21/05/2025 16:14

@Karmakamelionyou’re right. Muslims shouldn’t either. Same argument applies. I was merely replying to the thoughts of a poster who seemed to feel that British Jews needed a stronger position somehow because of their faith. They do not.
i am not Jewish by the way! Just aware that its an unfair request to make - same, as you say, as for Muslims

some have, some haven’t. Just like other British citizens.

@Seagullsandsausagerolls I’m not sure leading Jewish people in our society have called out what’s happened in Gaza. Why is Gary Lineker doing it? Maybe others should step up? I believe in the two state solution but we have many prominent Jewish people who have remained silent. I am troubled by that. I do want everyone to be safe and respected and I abhor the attack by Hamas and all persecution. Again, two wrongs don’t make a right.

At least the government has become more vocal and is recognising some elements in the Israeli government are not the sort of people we want to associate with.

Why do Jewish people in the UK have to say anything? Why does it trouble you? Does it occur to you that it's incredibly hard as a Jewish person to speak up either in support or against Israel for fear of being attacked? It's easy for people like Lineker to say what he wants without recognising any nuance. He has no skin in the game.

Edited to add that it's not true that they haven't and here's an example of when they have (and the fallout) https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8rg0xvdm8po

Probably? Most of my friends would fall into the more pro Palestinian camp but even they know not to call Israelis Nazis. I'm flabbergasted by how often it pops up on here.

Same ... I think comparisons to Nazis only crops up so much on here because it's an anonymous forum. Which is depressing really. I haven't said anything about the war on here that I would be ashamed to say in person.

Even though my friends and I rarely talk about wars, I just know that none of them would use the term Nazis. Especially since it's already been pointed out that some people find the word upsetting & triggering.

TomeTome · 21/05/2025 10:22

Babies are starving to death as we type because of choices made by the Israeli Government and their armed forces. It’s unjustifiable on any level. In the future will it be Netanyahu’s Israel we mention to make a point not Nazi Germany? I think it is going that way. I can’t see that either Israel or Palestine can continue as they are.

I refer to those who can't call what is happening in Gaza a GENOCIDE for fear of being called antisemitic.
I.e The politicians and a like.

It is a Genocide being committed by the Israeli government.

You just don’t understand that some people genuinely see it as a war and some see it as a genocide.

Putting it in capitals doesn’t change people’s opinions. If I said it’s a WAR you would consider that rather foolish & wrong I expect.

I'm quite sure Lineker's career is not in demise. If anything he has gained kudos from showing the honour to resign when so many people do not resign for rather worse conduct. He will certainly continue to be greatly in demand for sports commenting, endorsements and the like, and his podcast company is going from strength to strength.

Edited

Yeah from what I can see Lineker believes that silence is complicity, he said that and he has walked the walk.

Every single person who is in the public eye knows the risk if they speak out on Gaza, look at Ms Rachel, the awful things she has been accused of for speaking out about dying children. Lineker will have gone into this with his eyes wide open, weighed it up and decided that it was still worth speaking out and fair play to him for that. He made a mistake and he owned it. He will still have huge public support, he will still be a millionaire, Goalhanger still makes millions in profits, he will know that he didn't stay silent on ethnic cleansing and forced starvation. I'm sure he won't be crying into his cornflakes over this.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 21/05/2025 10:06

Israel is not the same as the Nazis. Israel was invaded by its neighbour and that neighbour continues to bombard Israel with tens of thousands of missiles, it's just that Israel has an excellent defence system that stops them getting through. What exactly do you expect Israel to do? It is the victim in this situation, the same as Ukraine.

And to blame antisemitism on Israel defending itself from the aggressor is just unspeakably awful. Like it wasn't going on beforehand! In fact, there have been demos and placard-wavers claiming genocide and ethnic cleansing going on for years which obviously aren't true thankfully.

There's also the infantilisation of Palestine. We're instructed to condemn Israel the whole country but, if we're pressed really hard and we really have to, only Hamas and only grudgingly. Well it was Palestine that invaded Israel and Palestinians who celebrated in the streets.

As for Lineker - sadly, the current self-ID left has no analytical framework, it's just a knee-jerk reaction that a particular cause is deemed left-wing so has to be mindlessly supported and anything done because of that support is fine because it's done by the left-wing good guys therefore automatically good and that's where Lineker went wrong. He's probably really surprised by the backlash. If only people thought before chasing the dopamine rush of social media echo chambers.
