Conflict in the Middle East

It is perfectly right for Israel to deny access to MPs at a time of war when their only possible reason to visit was to undermine a country at war

Why are 2 MPs wishing to visit Israel (not on government businees).

Is to look at potential trading ideas? Is is to suggest enhanced military co-operation with an ally? Is to offer personal condensed to the victims of October 7th? Is it to learn more about the culture of Istael?

Of course it isnt.

Two MPs paid by our tax and supposedly representing constituents have tried to go to Israel to make a political point and possibly engage in some sort of protest behaviour. I think Israel is perfectly within their rights to refuse to partake in publicity stiunts or to host representatives of other counties whose sole wish is to criticise them and not support.

Enough said.

I think if you openly post anti Israel rhetoric then you can expect a less than warm welcome.

they tried to fluff their way through immigration, Israel put them In a hotel and flew them home again. Considering their anti inflammatory comments one would suggest that’s more than civil.

I am pleased my local MP posted a picture of all the mp’s supporting these women…. 70.

Israel had as much right to ban people who are there to cause trouble as we are. We just don’t often chose to exercise that right.

Gosh that was kind.

I’d have left them to arrange their own flights back and wait on hard airport chairs in a detained section until they went! I suppose there was a risk they might have live streamed themselves pretending they were being held hostage though, so the hotel was a better idea.

Yes, it's absolutely shocking the number of threads parroting Hamas propaganda. The thing I don't get (as an Irish person) is how some British people uncritically support terrorism. I want to ask them "If you didn't march or cheer for the IRA back in the day, why are you supporting Hamas?".

They would struggle to answer that one.

@mids2019 I entirely agree with you. Unfortunately Mumsnet is hugely biased in favour of a terrorist origination fuelled unfortunately by widespread antisemitism on the left.

@quantumbutterflyit leaks out eventually….

stomachamelon · 10/04/2025 16:05

@hellohellooowell you can salute them from/ at their constituencies.
do you often ‘expose hell’ whilst flying into said country, taking their hospitality and expecting privilege? Strange…:

hellohellooo · 10/04/2025 15:58

Madness

Fair play to anyone who attempts to expose the hell they have created

I salute them

quantumbutterfly · 10/04/2025 12:41

Didn't you know? Anyone who doesn't vilify Israel must be an agent of the state. You do know Jewish people control the media right ?😶Where have you been?

(My apologies to anyone whose sarcasm meter is broken.)

I’m not in favour of the evil dictator you have in charge and the bombing of women and children.
That’s not anti semitism.

You have in charge? Is the poster you were responding to Israeli then?

stomachamelon · 10/04/2025 10:54

@hellohellooothats Irrelevant tbh. Any other country there wouldn’t be as much as a raised eyebrow as it wouldn’t be ‘news’. Can you imagine China allowing such ‘politicians’ in? Nope…

Mmmmm maybe there is a reason why they are doing so?!!!

I wonder 💭

Perhaps they should focus on what they were elected to do ie represent their constituents.

Some MPs are more interested in events overseas then here, some made it clear they were standing on a Gaza ticket in the last election, very worrying imo.

Honestly the UK is in such a state they should be focusing on their constituents. I have no problem with Mp’s raising whatever they want in parliament however we do have departments and Mp’s who are focussed on foreign policy areas already. It just feels like pointless activism.

This was no neutral act of going to Israel to look into 'improving relations'. The two MPs were going to ostensibly look at charities (presumably Palestinian) to be fed propaganda for Hams and related groups to bring back to the UK. I don't know the make up of their constituencies but if there is a large 'Pro Palestine' contingent then politically they will have a local win from their jolly to visit a war zone.

The MPs could have contacted the Israeli embassy in London to state their purpose and indeed get an overview of charitable work in that region saving time and money. We don't seem to have streams of MPs flooding to Myanmar so why Gaza?

The UK would do the same if at a time of war and danger to our citizens political representatives with an obvious agenda aligning with our enemies wanted to visit.

Exactly this.

Absolutely shocking and disgraceful they used tax payers money and time they should have been spent on their constituents for this.

These virtue signalling, useful idiot, bad actors should resign from office for embarrassing the UK.

Gaimbins point absolutely.

If the MPs were going on some fact finding mission to the West bank greyhound be putting their lives in danger as well as simply being an embarrassment to the UK. I don't know if the MPs were expecting Palsstinians or Israelis to escort them around charities but I think there could have been some possibility having UK MP hostages added to the list of Hamas bargaining chips. Pure vain foolishness.

The presence of MPs would have been used as a propaganda opportunity for Hamas I am sure.

Don't be so ridiculous. The biggest danger in the West Bank is Israel not Hamas, look at the death and injury stats. Foreign government workers visit uneventfully all of the time, despite what some people would have you think Hamas aren't lurking around every corner in Palestine waiting to kidnap people. An example from a few days ago On 24–26 March, Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard visited Israel and Palestine. The purpose was to examine how Sweden can contribute to the improvement of the current situation and promote bilateral relations.

You missed the bit about not supporting a genocide.

Twiglets1 · 07/04/2025 06:43

I agree with your OP @mids2019 and as someone who lives close to one of the MPs I did think their time would have been better spent representing their local constituents at home rather than them with their 2 aides attempting to visit a war torn country overseas.

They have both spoken out against Israel in Parliament recently, fair enough that is their right to free speech in this country. However, Israel also have the right to stop people entering their country who they believe are intending to "act against the state and its citizens".

The MPs were only elected into office in 2024 with promises to do lots for their local constituents - shouldn't they be focusing on those instead?

In a time when the safety and survival of their population is paramount to them, the Israeli authorities are under no obligation whatsoever to let unqualified, publicity seeking bad faith actors into their country who would seek to undermine their national security and interests. Much like any other country in the world but of course it's only condemnable when the Israel does it.

Slow clap for the MPs wasting their time and taxpayers' money on a jaunt far away from their own constituents' considerably more pressing issues and engaging in a publicity stunt which was never going to have any other outcome, which is exactly why they did it.
