I think it's a real positive that brave Gazans are now protesting against Hamas openly demonstrating at least some of the population can see it is Hamas that has brought death and destruction to the enclave.

The irony is that war trodden Gazans are protesting in harsh conditions possibly risking death against Hamas while in your average 'Pro Palestine' March in London there are very limited signs with Hamas out. Should we start anti Hamas protests in the UK in solidarity with Gaza?

Masked Hamas militants dispersed protesters who gathered in northern Gaza to rally against the group.

The pro Palestine hate marches in London make no reference to Hamas ' role in the conflict and to my mind come across as a venue for expressing anti senitism and legitimacy for the removal of Israel as a state.

Particularly if you add to that the Met Police policy to expel any obvious Jews from the sites of the pro-Palestine protests - Jewish men (identifiable by their yarmulkas) being told to leave the area; Jews being told they shouldn't travel into central London at the time of the protests etc.

The story was that it was for these peoples' safety, but really ...? The police were making a choice about whose safety mattered more. Jewish people were told to move on & not enter public space.

Jew hatred (or anti-semitism if you prefer a more sanitised term) is so insidious it's sometimes hard to recognise without this sort of reframing.

With how many people the IDF are killing everyday.

Whatsinanamehey · 29/03/2025 14:41

There was another strike on beit lahiya today, at this rate there's not going to be many left to protest against Hamas is there.

That's interesting twiglets and just shows the reality of pooitics. Hamas are probably shitting themselves with the prospect of internal exception toppling them because that is probably as great a danger as Israeli action. The beginnings of a revolt in Gaza will impact peace talks above I have always thought any viable peace has to be predicated on the removal of Hamas. There can be no peace with Hamas.

How much attention will the media place on these nascent revolts? I don't know the answer to that but I am sure there will be some right on person coming along to say that it is Israeli propaganda.

I agree there can be no peace with Hamas and that this is a turn of events they must be shitting themselves about.

I think the media are paying attention to these revolts and was encouraged to see it being reported in UK mainstream media like the BBC & The Telegraph.

Predictably Hamas are claiming that the growing Gaza protests against its rule are actually aimed at Israel but I think it's very clear as stated in this Sky news report that not all Gaza protests are necessarily 'anti-Hamas', but some are 'for sure.'

Thank you - I tried to make it clear that I didn't think all marchers in the UK are pro Hamas (though some plainly are as we see from the placards) or that all Palestinians in Gaza share the same opinions either.

You were totally clear. It was not a 'gross generalisation' but completely and undeniably true.

Report: Hamas may be open to freeing some hostages in exchange for Eid al-Fitr truce

Israeli television reported Friday that mediators see a willingness among some senior Hamas members to release a small number of hostages to secure a truce during the Ramadan-ending holiday of Eid al-Fitr.

The Kan public broadcaster acknowledged that it was still unclear what Hamas will ask in return for those it releases, though it did say that the freed hostages would include American-Israeli IDF lone soldier Edan Alexander, with the United States and Qatar intensively involved in the proposal.

Another Kan reporter said the deal was less about Eid al-Fitr and more to do with the protests that have broken out against Hamas throughout Gaza over the past several days.

Hamas wants to crack down on those participating in the protests and cannot do so due to Israel’s resumed operations in Gaza, as the military is targeting terror operatives that it spots out in the open, according to the report.

A ceasefire, even of several days, would allow for Hamas to rein in the protests, which have been a major source of distress within the Palestinian terrorist organization, the network claimed.

The issue is that any conflict is extremely complex and a simple narrative of Israel bad/Palestine good is wrong for anyone capable of critical thought. The description of Hamas thugs beating protesters is typical behaviour of an oppressive regime and Hamas is that amongst other heinous things.

The pro Palestine hate marches in London make no reference to Hamas ' role in the conflict and to my mind come across as a venue for expressing anti senitism and legitimacy for the removal of Israel as a state. I have no doubt some in those crowds that congregate in our major cities view these anti Hamas protesters in Gaza as traitors as they are abandoning the resistance who wish to drive Jews out of Israel.

Me too. I was very encouraged to see the anti-Hamas march by ordinary Palestinians.

Yes . Doesn’t mean to say that the only problem Palestinians face is Hamas.
The Israeli extremists/ settlers have oppressed ordinary people and we see/know what they have done.
The extremists on both sides are ugly and reprehensible.

If the pro Palestinian protests moved to anti-Hamas I would support them. I won’t support them with the current narrative.

i hope this gains momentum. The constant anti-isreali rhetoric is ignorant.

Th is an excellent summary and I also completely share this view.

A lack of condemnation of Hamas on the numerous marches is actually very telling of the unspoken sentiment of the protesters.

Martymcfly24 · 28/03/2025 15:50

What brave people to protest. Hopefully this is the beginning of change that will lead to a more peaceful future.

I absolutely agree and this has been my position from the beginning

They appear to admit that they were biased towards a terrorist organisation and against Israel.

I personally think there has been a lot of silence around condemnation of Hamas, particularly around the rapes of Israeli women duringOctober7th. There was a lot of 'prove it' type disgraceful comments. I must say that made me support Israel more, since the apparent lack of condemnation because it was Israeli women was shocking.

I think the type of reluctance of organisations like Amnesty to condemn Hamas is appalling.

I agree 💯

Amnesty stopped being a human rights organisation a long time ago. Instead its a extremely prejudiced ' some rights for people we like, and removing rights from people we dislike and will demonise' organisation. Its remarkable they can't see what they have become.

I lost any faith in them over all the sexual misconduct they've presided over, including their advocacy of trafficking and prostituting women (ie rape) as "sex work."

Yes, its basically the refusal to support Israelis when a deliberate mass atrocity was committed against them that led to me supporting Israel.

That laid bare the racist demonisation that has happened against Israelis. I cannot do anything other than condemn that,

I heard a commentator said that when the Jihadists 'Beatles' beheaded people everyone was appalled by that and could see the utter barbarity of it, and how that exacerbated the terribleness of the murder. No-one tried to minimise it or say 'well they only killed a few people.' Yet when Hamas committed and recorded and gloried of acts of deliberate barbarity and cruelty, people instantly started to minimise and defend or excuse or mitigate it. Its been such an eye opener to me about how easy it is to get people to dehumanise other groups of humans, even, or perhaps especially, those who consider themselves the 'good guys.'

Totally agree with you. I'm still appalled by the reaction or lack of reaction to what was a mass terrorist attack. The excuses and minimisation was shocking.

The marches in support of Palestine when their designated leaders and assorted other groups plus some Palestinian residents took part in the mass attacks just after the attack was repulsive.

@scrolling

Your really interesting article about Amnesty. May I ask if it was behind a paywall originally?

ImmediateReaction · 28/03/2025 09:23

Seems OK to criticise Israel on mn but try to post a report stating how Amnesty admit they didn't condemn Hamas enough and why gets deleted.

Disgusting.
