Conflict in the Middle East

Are Hamas as thick as they are evil?!

After seeing masked, uniformed well-fed Hamas soldiers humiliating emaciated hostages, does anyone even feel a shred of sympathy for them?

Can’t they even understand how bad this looks and what the consequences will be both for themselves and, more importantly, for the rest of the Palestinians?

It would be hard for them to be as thick as they are evil, because they are extremely evil, but I think they might have achieved it…

Any Jewish person who opposes Zionism is described as a self hating Jew to discredit them. Listen to Noam Chomsky on this phenomenon.

Yes, I too have been called a self loathing Jew for not supporting the Jerusalem Program (of settlement by any means including ethnic cleansing) which is a requirement to be accepted into the Zionist Congress.

I wouldn’t say you are delusional, but the term “shaheed” in Arabic and as used in the Middle East doesn’t have the same meaning as “martyr” in English in the west. It doesn’t have the connotations of a sacrifice of another or yourself for faith in a god or cause as that is a connotation set up by the Catholic Church in the west.

A martyr simply refers to an innocent person who once killed goes straight to heaven. The term is used for victims dying of- disease, natural disaster, drowning/burns, murder/war/unjust imprisonment, crash/accident while travelling, dying due to pregnancy or childbirth complications.

I didn't know this. Thankyou.

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/02/2025 17:23

Reading back, that obviously sounds like cloud cuckoo land. Throughout history, though, wars have pretty much always ended with negotiated settlement. Realistically, what’s the alternative? Years of fighting and total destruction, hundreds of thousands of dead? People fighting people who, going way back, share origins?

God, I hate “strong men”.

They've martyred their children. Hamas admit this themselves. They've called their own people proud martyrs, necessary sacrifices.

The war they started with their invasion of 7 October has destroyed Gaza. It is in ruins.

Please do tell me where I'm delusional here.

Also, I'm happy to get into a historical debate with you if you wish, but you'll need to refer me directly to where I am incorrect. Just saying I'm delusional isn't going to be enough.

@ParsnipPuree ,

It’s not quite as simple as that.

Hamas are an Iranian creation or, if not their creation, their creature.

Hamas, pre election, helped with a lot of civic functions. They ran the equivalent of MP’s surgeries and distributed food and money to those that needed them, funded by Iran. They weren’t voted in because they were antisemites. And, they got voted in shortly after Arafat rejected a really good solution.

The problem is after election they made it impossible for Israel to negotiate with them and refused further elections.

Most Palestinians have no memory of any of that as they are so young. It is a nation dominated by adolescents!

But how we move from where we are to a stable and peaceful two state solution, I don’t know. It is obvious, however, that Hamas should have no part in it.

Children never have a say in governments

Indeed @SharonEllis .They are always punished for the decisions of their governments, though.

A Peace and reconciliation process has to happen. It’s the only way to end the slaughter on both sides. Even if the parties have to be dragged kicking and screaming to the table and all international support withdrawn until agreement is reached.

If it can happen in Northern Ireland and South Africa, it can happen in Gaza, surely?

LoremIpsumCici · 09/02/2025 17:13

“Definitely these handovers will further damage an already delicate ceasefire. Between their actions and the words of Trump and the Israeli government, it’s hard to see any hope for the next phase of the ceasefire.”

The actions of Israel have been problematic as well. During a ceasefire, you’re supposed to stop shooting at everyone- terrorist or civilian. Israel did not. They have been killing a handful of people in Gaza every day since the ceasefire started, including snipers shooting and killing toddlers.

It also needs to be remembered that the people of Gaza created Hamas, elected it, supported it, hid it, sheltered it, filled its ranks and celebrated all of its atrocities.

The people of Israel are propping up the corrupt Netanyahu Goverment and the IDF. Does that mean they deserve to have been attacked by Hamas? No, of course it doesn’t. Any more than 17,000 innocent children deserve to have been murdered by the Israeli Government. They had no say in the forming of Hamas.

I'm not sure that's true. Small parties are propping up Netanyahu. Its the problem with PR and coalition governments. There is a lot of opposition to Netanyahu.
Children never have a say in governments. Thats what parents are for.

In answer to the question ... highly likely

I imagine most people would be had they been “educated” in Gaza after generations of hatred on both sides.

Absolutely, @bodydrain

Can’t get into that link. Probably just as well. The three Israeli hostages looked awful. Imagine not knowing that your wife and children were dead. I imagine the thought of them were all that kept Eli going all these months.

Man’s inhumanity to man. We’ll never learn.

Hama has not murdered anywhere near as many civilians as Israel has. I do not support Hamas. But I also do not support the murderous activities of Israel. It is possible to hold both positions.

Exactly, some people only see it from one side unfortunately

Every time a poster points something out that doesn't fit your narrative, you tell them to educate themselves. Everything I said about Israel saving the life of the Hamas leader can be backed up by a quick google search.

And many if them are imprisoned for terrorism and murder. 80 of them were released a week ago free to carry on murdering civilians. But you do you.

Have you seen the footage from 10/7? The actual official, documented footage shown to journalists and the like. I have seen some, not all of it. I couldn’t manage it. I was frightened I might never be able to remove those images from my head. How do you explain this? An aberration on the part of a gentle, desperate, historically oppressed people? How do you explain their neighbours leaving them to it? What should Israel have done afterwards, given the hostage situation? How do you explain the repeated refusals of peace deals even when they are hugely advantageous to the Palestinian people? Do you believe Israelis should just leave the region en masse and hand the vastly improved and hugely increased in value land and infrastructure straight to the Palestinian people? So many questions I know and I don’t expect a real answer to any of them,

Well said.
