Are Hamas as thick as they are evil?!

Newbutoldfather · 09/02/2025 08:25

After seeing masked, uniformed well-fed Hamas soldiers humiliating emaciated hostages, does anyone even feel a shred of sympathy for them?

Can’t they even understand how bad this looks and what the consequences will be both for themselves and, more importantly, for the rest of the Palestinians?

It would be hard for them to be as thick as they are evil, because they are extremely evil, but I think they might have achieved it…

Ofcourse Palestinian prisoners are also tortured. This is common knowledge. Remember when Muazzaz Abayaat was released after nine months of torture. He wasn't even charged with anything.

'Genocide, genocide, genocide' ........... Oh, but here's thousands of energised, well-fed Gazans in rude health, clamouring with their fully charged smartphones to capture the misery and terror on the face of a tortured and emaciated hostage as he is put through a degrading handover ceremony prior to discovering that his wife, teenage daughters and brother have all been murdered by the very people who are forcing him to behave as if they are doing him a massive act of generosity.

The media coverage of this war has been despicable. Endless footage of crying children in hospital but the complete absence of the thousands of Hamas fighters clearly extant in Gaza, the constant presentation of Palestinian narratives as facts with no attempt at fact-checking or interrogation, the eagerness to ascribe the worst possible motives to Israeli actions without any attempt at context.

There was a Sky News report on the hostage-prisoners swaps two or three weeks ago where Anna Botting went to the home of a family whose teenage son was being held in an Israeli prison for posts made on social media. (I guess the UK can hardly lecture the Israelis for criminalising social media posts nowadays.) She interviewed the father who said that he himself had been in prison for a total of 15 years, the last time for two years after he had been arrested at a checkpoint. It was only at the end of the report that we were told in passing that the father had been in Palestinian Islamic Jihad, a group even more extreme than Hamas. We were never given the facts about whether his son was 13 or 19 (it makes a difference) or whether he really was in prison just for social media posts or what those posts might have been. We never found out why the father had been in prison or why he had been arrested the last time. We basically got an emotionally manipulative narrative straight from the mouth of a jihadist terrorist, from which we were meant to draw parallels between his situation and the situation of an Israeli waiting to discover the fate of their hostage relative, with none of the journalists involved making any attempt to verify his claims or present the full story. The standard of journalism is at best pathetic, at worst complicit.

Thank you for posting this.

According to many posts on Twitter (and your ‘evidence’ was from Instagram btw) this man was treated for stomach cancer by Israel which saved his life and was NOT a detainee or a prisoner.

His name is apparently not on the released prisoner list which is available online but in Hebrew so I can’t read it. His name apparently can’t be found online anywhere until yesterday.

I mean you kind of hope that the above isn’t true in a way as it is beyond sick for someone who’s life was saved to pretend the very people who did that starved and abused you instead to try to deflect from innocent hostages who really were treated like that!

Thank you. I looked for his name too and couldn't find it.

Some clarification from the pps would be welcome.

The images from the Palestinian hostages are evil. This is just one man. There are thousands still being held without charge including children.

Why would you say that's not a verifiable source? The previous poster has provided plenty of links there, are those also propaganda?

Those links were nothing to do with that intagram account with its blatantly antisemitic content. Show me where those links verify the case posted? Why is it ok to post random social media propaganda?

EasternStandard · 09/02/2025 18:20

@LoremIpsumCici I appreciate the answer and perhaps it can be done. However I understand why those who fear their actions would be wary.

They look committed and very much not like people who are ready to step down. Their manner, coverings and weapons.

I would want a decent barrier between them and those targeted. Not sure if that's possible

SharonEllis · 09/02/2025 18:15

How would you get the Hamas men in the images to behave in a way that is not lethal to anyone?

Even if they are not part of a new government they are still active, what would they do?

I’d take advice from the people that got the IRA, ANC, PLO and other terrorists to lay down their arms, disband and allow elections or a caretaker entity to run Gaza. Either in person or via any sort of advice they’d written and left behind. I think it would involve negotiations of some sort. Hamas can be negotiated with - the proof of that is that two ceasefires have happened. We can’t kill them all or defeat them by lethal force- that’s not a moral can’t but a physically impossible can’t.

“I believe they have been by-and-large radicalised, and it will take the removal of Hamas and a meaningful program to win over hearts and minds and deradicalise them.….They need to be offered carrots as well as sticks”

Yes I wholeheartedly agree with this. When a certain % have been radicalised, and the rest are pretending out of fear to survive, no one knows who they can trust, everyone wonders if it’s only them that hasn’t been radicalised.

Carrots - as in a real positive future that includes freedom from terrorist dictatorship and a path to equal rights as Israeli citizens would do wonders.

It is hard to make someone act happy if they aren’t feeling it.

It really isn’t when the people aren’t in a democracy with no right to protest, no right to migrate, no right to free speech, and a dictator’s soldiers can take you out back and shoot you, after shooting your kids in front of you. There are so many bodies in Gaza, and armed gangs running around as well as Hamas that survival often depends on acting skills.

The Red Cross would like to make the handovers private

At least with the public exposure of Hamas it's clear what people are up against

Even if these men / terrorists with face coverings and weapons are hidden from the world stage they still are present and active.

So what happens with them? Do they continue on their mission or something else

Newbutoldfather · 09/02/2025 17:54

@LoremIpsumCici ,

I am not sure about that. The crowd looked pretty enthused to me. It is hard to make someone act happy if they aren’t feeling it.

And Hamas’s ability to co-ordinate that kind of stuff was severely compromised (if not destroyed) by the war.

I believe they have been by-and-large radicalised, and it will take the removal of Hamas and a meaningful program to win over hearts and minds and deradicalise them.

They need to be offered carrots as well as sticks, but it will still take a very long time…and no Hamas (or at least senior Hamas, some of the young guys can probably be turned around).

LoremIpsumCici · 09/02/2025 17:47

I should answer the “are they as thick as they are evil” question.

I personally think that decades of violence and intermittent warfare has resulted in many young men who are evil and completely oblivious to just how evil their actions are. The videos of Hamas during the hostage handovers is a lot of proud posturing and intimidation of the hostages and crowds around them. For all we know, the crowd is forced to be there and told to cheer at gunpoint. Children ordered to dress up and sing songs. Women forced to dress up and act happy. It’s a very old tactic to use force and coercion on a captive population- which everyone in Gaza is- to put on a show of strength to the enemy. We all agree the handovers were massively staged and replete with propaganda, well the staging includes crowd management and behaviour. You’d be naive to think the regular “Gazans” herded there to perform love for Hamas are expressing what they really think and feel.

Children never have a say in governments

Indeed @SharonEllis .They are always punished for the decisions of their governments, though.

A Peace and reconciliation process has to happen. It’s the only way to end the slaughter on both sides. Even if the parties have to be dragged kicking and screaming to the table and all international support withdrawn until agreement is reached.

If it can happen in Northern Ireland and South Africa, it can happen in Gaza, surely?

Hope so.

I think both populaces have been well and truly indoctrinated by their supposed leaders. I presume people have also seen the news footage of Israeli citizens chanting and cheering as bombs rain down on Gaza?

It seems inhuman when you observe it from the outside, but I think it's hubristic of any of us to think that we wouldn't also be susceptible to radicalisation if we were brought up in a society that was taught to hate and fear its closest neighbours, without being given any of the wider context or the view from the other side. This applies to both Israel and Palestine. Hamas are monstrous; the ruling Israeli regime is also monstrous, but is much, much more powerful. Anybody in the West who claims not to get this is being very disingenuous.

This is an important point. When you look at polls of people in Israel and in Gaza there is a lot of antipathy and racism towards each other expressed. It is fair to say that these populations have been radicalised to dehumanise each other and violence of the worst kinds has become normalised there.

Fifiworks · 09/02/2025 17:31

LoremIpsumCici · 09/02/2025 17:13

“Definitely these handovers will further damage an already delicate ceasefire. Between their actions and the words of Trump and the Israeli government, it’s hard to see any hope for the next phase of the ceasefire.”

The actions of Israel have been problematic as well. During a ceasefire, you’re supposed to stop shooting at everyone- terrorist or civilian. Israel did not. They have been killing a handful of people in Gaza every day since the ceasefire started, including snipers shooting and killing toddlers.

I completely agree with you.
