Being racist and closed off from working with other countries and societies does not confer the right to commit ethnic cleansing. It does not make it ok to facilitate mass murder.

Purely pragmatically, looking at the state of the place it's not like they would be uprooted from their homes as there aren't any left. For the vast majority it might be a better life in another location.
The fly in the ointment is that Egypt etc al don't want the Palestinians, not least because they don't want to import Hamas.

"Fly in the ointment"??

If you wouldn't have that number of people in your country (and I'm assuming most people wouldn't, and Trump certainly wouldn't), don't casually suggest somewhere else takes what you won't.

(I'm aware geographically Egypt makes sense, but most people happily suggesting Egypt takes all these people wouldn't take them themselves even if they were physically nearer).

I don't think anyone should underestimate Trump. I read an article today about his phone call last week with the Danish prime minister Mette Frederiksen, the phone call was described as horrendous,

"Trump was said to be aggressive and confrontational in his attempt to take over the island. Before, it was hard to take seriously, but I do think it is serious and potentially very dangerous.
Trump was reported to have threatened Denmark, a Nato ally, with targeted tariffs, essentially taxes on Danish exports to the US"

He says things to shock and then sees how much he can get away with. Whose to know what threats he can use to try and get what he wants in the region.

American here. Trump's not kidding about Greenland. Greenland is open to becoming independent and we're open to making them a territory. Probably not a state because then they'd have to pay US taxes. Probably more like Puerto Rico, Samoa, Guam, etc. whose residents pay no federal taxes.

Trump's end goal is to get out of NATO, which is already being discussed in the Senate. If we have Greenland (we already have Alaska) we can put an "iron dome" over the US and withdraw from NATO. Making NATO countries increase expenditures to 5% of GDP is the first step. Most (all?) will fail to do so thereby abrogating the treaty. He's already withdrawn 20,000 troops from Europe with more to come, and he's only been in office for 6 days.

Europeans fail to understand how sick and tired Americans are of paying hundreds of billions of dollars a year to protect people who essentially hate us and definitely look down upon us. Yes, that's you. We know how you feel about us and we mostly feel the same way about you.

Trump won in a landslide and reducing our military commitments is a big reason why. So he's going to force y'all to pay up and develop militaries worthy of the name or learn to speak Russian.

(An aside: I'm a retired military officer. During my service I had the distinct displeasure of working with 2 UK exchange officers, supposedly the best of the best, or they wouldn't have been sent to embed with US forces. One was a drunk who took her clothes off at parties and threw herself at men, and the other was a foul-mouthed misogynist even when sober on duty. Just nasty people, both of them, very unprofessional, very work shy.)

Your alternative is to learn to speak Russian and that's not a joke. We're done. Putin is no threat to us. Hamas (getting back to the theme of the thread) is no threat to us. Denmark is no threat to us. We're done being all y'all's sugar daddy. Time to defend yourselves or perish.

Daftasabroom · 27/01/2025 12:00

@Fordian the concept that there's anything special about this conflict versus any others is only driven by TikTok and antisemitism.

The UK supplies arms to the IDF, that makes it different to the other conflicts you describe.

Is it antisemitic to be against Israel's brutal suppression of the Palestinians?

People who want to "clear out" the Gazans from their homeland should read Primo Levi, the poem at the beginning of "If this is a man".

You who live safe
In your warm houses,
You who find, returning in the evening,
Hot food and friendly faces:
Consider if this is a man
Who works in the mud
Who does not know peace
Who fights for a scrap of bread
Who dies because of a yes or a no,
Consider if this is a woman,
Without hair and without name
With no more strength to remember,
Her eyes empty and her womb cold
Like a frog in winter.
Meditated that this came about:
I commend these words to you.
Carve them in your hearts
At home, in the street,
Going to bed, rising;
Repeat them to your children.
Or, may your house call apart,
May illness impede you,
May your children turn their faces from you.

The fly in the ointment is that Egypt etc al don't want the Palestinians, not least because they don't want to import Hamas.

But they would not be in their homeland. They would be homeless, stateless, evicted from what little remains of their land, evicted from where their loved ones are buried. They would never be able to return. Never be able to visit their children's graves, never be able to stand on the land of their parents and grandparents. That's not a course of action that it can be right to impose on anyone.

Palestine should be rebuilt for the Palestinians. Not so that expansionist extremists can profit from it.

You can’t just move people around like pawns. There are no homes, schools or education facilities for them anywhere. So these things will have to be built regardless.

But homes, schools, health care and other infrastructure will have to be rebuilt for the population anyway wherever they are, so why not in Gaza, which is their home?

It might not be special to some people, but it's bloody important to me.

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 27/01/2025 10:45

Let us recall that Trump BEFORE he was even inaugurated, brought about a ceasefire.

For the good of all people or for expansionist goals?

Fordian · 27/01/2025 10:31

Everybody thinks they're living in The Most Important Time, Ever, spluttering in despair and disbelief as the great arc of history sweeps along.

One century, your own people are on the ascendant, next you're slaves to the new ruling elite, actual or economic. Treaties are made, then broken; alliances surge then crumble; nations rise and fall; stronger peoples overcome weaker peoples; populations are decimated or move on, voluntarily or enforced; deepening religious beliefs, population imbalances, natural resource availability and natural disasters then scarcity drive conflict and reshape maps.

While millions are displaced either voluntarily- the great sweep of the global south wanting a piece of the prosperous north, or coercively- much of central Africa on the move away from religious war, ethnic cleaning, genocide and famine, somehow the fate of the Gazans has achieved a centrality in a section of western minds that flies in the face of the realities that history has demonstrated to us.

Trumps suggestion is impractical for one major reason: the neighbours do not want them, the reasons for which others have already detailed. But the concept that there's anything special about this conflict versus any others is only driven by TikTok and antisemitism.

Given the public shift of sentiment from the most powerful leader on Earth, I think a degree of pragmatism is called for, and an understanding that some of the players in this war need to rethink their strategy.

Let us recall that Trump BEFORE he was even inaugurated, brought about a ceasefire.

Both Palestine and Israel want Jerusalem, Trump had already moved the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, that speaks volumes..

Yep. The Abraham Accords have a lot to answer for: Expansionist Imperialism dressed up as peace. Perhaps they didn't think we'd care about or even notice the destruction of the Palestinian State and its people.

"It’s a little bit of an unfortunate situation there"

Gosh what an insight. Here I was thinking it was a war zone, not a mild inconvenience.

It's just a mild spot of genocide and ethnic cleansing.

Utterly disgusting that the world is in such a state where world leaders and their hangers-on can openly advocate for this, and ordinary people can somehow say they don't think it sounds that bad.

People don't see Palestinians (and on a wider scale, Muslims) as deserving of human rights and don't see their lives as mattering as much as others. But people forget that, to the people in power, they'll likely be disposable too, at some point.

@statsfun

Back in 2024: "Jared Kushner has praised the “very valuable” potential of Gaza’s “waterfront property” and suggested Israel should remove civilians while it “cleans up” the strip...“It’s a little bit of an unfortunate situation there, but from Israel’s perspective I would do my best to move the people out and then clean it up,” Kushner said.

And here is Trump trying to do just what his son in law stated openly. He's a real estate developer after all.

So the man who is determined to stop each and every immigrant into his own country expects a selection of other countries to open their borders to ‘cleared out’ Palestinians?

Exactly that. The irony of the news reports tonight about Trump.
The far right in Israel are dancing. All going as planned even with the little ceasefire hiccup and token resignations.
What has Israel become.

Trump wants the Saudis to pump out more oil to bring the global price and inflation down to make him look good in the US. He also wants Saudis to normalise relations with Israel and does he also want a Qatari gas route?

So how will it all pan out.
I feel so much for Palestinians just pawns in a horrible game.

Whatsinanamehey · 26/01/2025 20:56

I agree with this. I don't think you can just dismiss such statements he makes, he is after all in one of the most powerful positions globally right now.

Exactly. Now judge suggest something heinous - but less utterly heinous than this suggestion - it will be seen as a climb down and therefore to be accepted.

ethnic cleansing of Palestine is going to happen (continue) before our eyes.

I bet MBS is in the background also standing to make a lot of lonely, and increase his power .
next stop West Bank. Israel is hell bent on eradicating Palestinians and now has the most powerful men in the world helping him

Wintersgirl · 26/01/2025 22:10

Yassnass145 · 26/01/2025 15:42

America and Israel started this war to remove Palestinians from Gaza. It is their end game. To extract the oil there and take the land.

Exactly, move out the Palestinians and Israeli's move in..

Probably necessary to protect the Israeli people from Hamas scum and their supporters.

If you look at the number of deaths and destruction on both sides then the Palestinians have a greater claim for protection from the Israeli government and their violent supporters (extremist settlers)
