I guess people walking around chanting "from the river to the sea" every weekend makes me feel nervous. What do you think "from the river to the sea" means? It means "Judenrein."

I get this. Most non-Jews would be surprised at how normal it is for even third or fourth generation British Jews to feel indeterminately "foreign", to have bank accounts in Israel in case of a need for a quick exit, and now (paradoxically) post-Brexit, to have German passports where that is possible, for the same reason. It's awful having to live with a constant, generational sense of not feeling safe. And it's a double and ongoing tragedy that this is now the lived experience of Palestinians, because of the collision of this awful crisis in Jewish history with a typical botched, racist, selfish exit by the British from a colonial territory. Absolutely everyone deserves better than this.

What does it mean when Netanyahu uses it?

And I’m truly sorry for what happened to your German family @YourAmplePlumPoster

Why is a historical piece of factual information "disgusting?"
It can't be genocide because it isn't. Genocide means the complete elimination of a particular race of people. Remember the 6 million?

Please read the definition of what constitutes a genocide.
A genocide is not defined by how many perished but by the intent. This is why what happened in Rwanda is recognised as a genocide.
By the way, there is only one race, the human race. Do you mean ethnicity?

By the way, Jesus was not a Palestinian as is being declared by the fashionable keffiyah wearers but a Jew from Judea.

You must have been really irked by the nativity display in Bethlehem, of baby Jesus wrapped in a keffiyah then. I thought it was a beautiful display of solidarity with the Palestinians.

Having family who were gassed gives you some insights.

If we are going by that, then holocaust survivors like Stephen Kapos have a greater claim than you. And he, like others have called Israel's actions in Gaza, a genocide.

I'm a descendent of German Jews so I think I know what genocide means.

And yet you got it wrong?

From your definition above, you really don't.

If you don't even know the definition of genocide, you really shouldn't be arguing about it as no one can take such points seriously.

No, that’s not what genocide means. That’s an example of a genocide that was nearly completely successful by the time the Nazis were defeated. The entire point of creating a new legal definition was to stop something like that - genocide - ever happening again, to anyone. If it had been unique and unrepeatable in the sense captured by the legal definition, there would be no need for a legal definition. My quibble with your argument is that I’m fairly certain you haven’t bothered to do much research other than to find some easily googleable and very shallow material (which has a proper hinterland and scholarship you are clearly totally unfamiliar with) that backs up your very many assertions that you have made here. that boil down to: it is essentially ok and necessary to kill thousands of Palestinians because, variously, it happened to us and it was worse, it can’t be genocide because genocide happened to us and they aren’t really a people, in any case it was empty of a real people until we rocked up and started making the desert bloom, they are all dangerous. And you know some Israelis and are therefore an expert.

I would argue that keeping thousands and thousands of Palestinians, including children, in arbitrary administrative detention is more likely to sew the seeds for another October 7th than very many other things the Israeli government could do

Edited

In any event- I hope justice is done and peace can be achieved for everyone. It’s not going to be easy ,

And what point is this in aid of? That the Palestinians didn’t have a modern national identity until very recently. And if true then….so what? It can’t be genocide because they aren’t a “proper” people? What a disgusting line of argument. There’s much more nuanced and complex treatments of this question of Palestinian national identity and culture by Palestinian historians but doubtless you haven’t bothered to read those.

“would argue that Palestinians have paid a huge price for what Hamas did and if you add that to the table I don't see an imbalance”
I don’t think “balance” ( whatever that means in this context) Is the main consideration.

Whatever concessions are made the Israeli negotiators will need to make sure that Israeli security is not weakened in the future ( by the release of dangerous prisoners) .
There is no point sowing the seeds for another October 7th with the release of certain prisoners.

I would assume that would be ensured through negotiations. None of us know what prisoners are being released. I also think it's important that balance is achieved and I think those, on both sides, who have warrants out for their arrest should be brought to justice as part of the process.

Exactly. There has to be a strategy to end the cycle of violence.

It's negotiations and no not always palatable but concessions need to be made. I would argue that Palestinians have paid a huge price for what Hamas did and if you add that to the table I don't see an imbalance. Maybe if the arrest of Netanyahu and Gallant is added to the table less convicted Palestinian prisoners could be released.

Yes, I suppose I was talking about previous occasions when convicted criminals have been released as I don't know who is on the list this time. And even if they havent been convicted they may have been involved in terrorist activity.

Agreed, but with those in administrative detention we will never know. The system is so unfair and arbitrary, and racist (because it’s only for Palestinians, not jews) that it’s impossible to know who is actually dangerous and who isn’t. It’s not actually for that. It’s a tool for collective punishment and interrogation, a direct legacy of the British colonial system, that is only needed when a population of locals need to be oppressed.
