I think there's a lot of similarities, yes, and feelings now of being unsafe (both individually and as communities) in ways that feel more overt than they used to. Safety in our homes, our places of worship, our local areas... The very black and white narratives in mainstream media and social media feel like they're reinforcing this. It feels like we need to start back at the beginning with rebuilding connections. I've been doing some work on an interfaith/multi-cultural initiative with pre-schools recently, which has been going ok so far.

Thank you Scirocco. Rebuilding connections is definitely what is needed.
Society has become very divided .

Where do you live I've never seen Christians praying in the streets at Easter? Remembrance is multi faith.

Rural uk. Here and in the last three towns I have lived in. Often it’s on Palm Sunday ( this is the Sunday before Easter sunday when Jesus rode on the donkey and was welcomed as the king of kings, followed here (and I think in the other towns but I can’t honestly remember attending) following the cross from church to church in Easter week. At Christmas there are obviously outside carols and prayers, and at harvest festival in the autumn….

There are justifiable concerns about immigration and the post was not completely “made up” to reflect badly on a vulnerable group. That’s just nonsense.

Claiming illegal immigrants are being put up in hotels is made up. Illegal immigrants are not entitled to that support. If your going to keep insisting otherwise you need to supply evidence. However since that rhetoric literally did invite hatred towards a vulnerable group to the point people were cheering on the idea of the hotel being burned down with them inside, it's absolutely not nonsense.

Reading the article, and from experience, it sounds like there is a fair amount of commonality between the Muslim and Jewish experience. I have a vague recollection that there have been interfaith initiatives before to do with addressing security, although I can’t find anything now when I looked. I think this would be a really good place for different minority communities to meet to share ideas and experience and knowledge. Antidote to all the narratives pushing isolationism and fracturing in the media as well

When it's completely made up to reflect badly on a vulnerable group of people what do you call it? Genuinely why do you think that Tommy Robinson etc make up and spread these claims? Likewise when someone makes up a disparaging lie about Jewish people, are they not doing so to incite hatred towards them? People don't make up lies about minorities for fun and games or without agenda. Unless you have another reason why they make it up?

And I did rebut the claims with evidence that no illegal immigrants are houses in hotels? What other evidence do you want? They're then more than welcome to respond to my evidence with their own evidence- that's how forums work. Instead you butted in to make up that myself and Dulra called someone hate filled and accused me of silencing people by correcting their misinformation.

I don't think I did say that. Are you confusing me with someone else?

Oh yes sorry...it was the person who I had originally been discussing this with. I didn't notice you weren't them! Apologies.

Applepie321 · 18/11/2024 13:27

Precisely. I commented on this thread having grown up in an area with a high proportion of Muslims, with muslim friends and neighbours about how both sides need to work on integrating into one community. There are sadly racist thugs who use any excuse to inflict violence but these people do not represent the vast majority, most of us detest these people and just want to live in harmony.

We have more in common than we all think and it is important that we can have conversations without being accused of Islamophobia which is what this thread has descended to.

I agree with you @Applepie321 ! The first 2 paragraphs anyway.

Not the 3rd though- I scrolled through and yes I understand some have posted logical and thoughtful posts but majority of what I saw was, as I quoted in my pp, a fair bit if islamaphobic trope which is why I used the ' muslim bashing' phrase in my first post.

I welcome constructive talk about islamaphobia and thoughts of it from people of all walks of life - that's the whole point everyone needs to be talking about it to tackle it- or not ( depending on if you think it's an issue) but not the 'go back home' sentiment that starts to get played out on threads about islamaphobia.

I can see the thread has now gone into talking about immigration which again reflects what I was saying in my 1st post- everything and the kitchen sink gets dragged in into these threads against Muslims we can't just discuss the article posted with abit of context yes for other issues but literally everything gets dragged in and we're left always going off topic. Anyway that me done for now. Have a lovely rest of the day.

It’s people who shut down debate who encourage the likes of Farage and Tommy Robinson.
Rebut the claims with evidence rather than call it incitement to hate …

I don't want to derail the thread responding to those points about the benefit or otherwise of the marches. You originally said that you thought those who were against the marches were islamaphobic and I just wanted to point out that saying the marches are pointless or anti semitic are not Islamaphobic views. That's all.

I don't think I did say that. Are you confusing me with someone else?

Right so even Dulra didn't called quantum hate filled then? And accurately said that misinformation doesn't help and it's about incitement to hate which it is. Quantum hardly made that misinformation up themselves, they read or heard it somewhere and the lie of it was created to incite hate against those people. I really don't see what you're taking issue with here.

“illegal immigrants don't get any state support obviously. Asylum seekers do while they are waiting for their application to be processed. I think this kind of misinformation doesn't help things and again is about incitement to hate. Well done”

Please quote where I called @quantumbutterfly hate filled though? I didn't. I said that incorrect rhetoric has been sued to invite hatred which is true and evidence in the actions we saw against those people falsely being accused of being illegal immigrants. People correcting misinformation isn't silencing, people asking you to clarify your point isn't silencing it's engaging in debate.

I don't think the marches are pointless. I think it's important to show the government that we don't want them to arm Israel, that we oppose what's happening in Palestine. I wouldn't ever want to live in a society when we can't protest about atrocities, especially when we are arming one side and the government is standing with one side, and not the other.
If any Jewish people feel unsafe then this needs to be addressed urgently. As many people have pointed out, Jewish people do attend the marches themselves. More and more Jewish people are speaking against Israel.

Which situation that exists? Illegal immigrants being houses in hotels?

Usernamesareboring1 · 18/11/2024 14:04

Possibly one of the issues behind the horrible riots ..was precisely this shutting down of debate - calling people “hate filled “ etc rather than rebutting their claims in a measured way.
The black and white thinking of some posters on here will get us nowhere

No they wouldn't though. Even if your claim is rejected it still doesn't class you as an illegal immigrant unless you continue to stay in the country illegally after being denied asylum. You can be denied asylum and appeal or apply to stay through the other immigration routes also. We wouldn't have this overblown reaction to people immigrating or seeking asylum if they weren't being demonised and blamed for the state of the country, something being caused completely by our political class therefore people should be careful how they talk about a very vulnerable group of people especially as we know what this kind of information and rhetoric has led to.

Right but what's the alternative? Do you agree with people claiming asylum or not? Do we not support any asylum seekers in case they end up being in the minority that are rejected?
It should not and didn't use to take a long time to process the claims. This is a manufactured problem to create exactly this sort of demonisation. There's a difference between saying you have an issue with the government not providing the funding to allow the home office to adequately process claims to ensure that people are verified quickly and not stuck in the system costing the public money and saying that asylum seekers are illegal immigrants being subsidies by the government. The first is based on facts and not prejudice and is a genuine public concern. Falsely (and knowingly falsely) stating that the people staying hotels are illegal immigrants scrounging off the government is the exact rhetoric that people felt jusified them setting fire to those hotels with people in them because they're "illegal".

When several hundred people are intercepted a week, the system begins to creak. When infrastructure is already struggling it collapses.

It will be interesting to see if the labour government are capable of solving a problem that is challenging the stability of several European countries.

Yes - I’m just pointing out that there is overlap between the two groups. And until asylum has been granted they might well be “illegal immigrants “

The word asylum and immigrants has been mentioned on the first few replies. Hence why I’m asking why are people relating immigrants and asylum seekers with what the Muslim population is facing as not all asylum seekers are Muslim and viceversa

The article writer Shabna Begum referenced the summer riots (presumably the ones following the murders in Southport, there have been other riots this year), the riot instigators leveraged local unrest and division and the mavens of mumsnet discussed it.

I went swimming with two friend to my local pool a few weeks in a row but we all stopped as the men wouldn't leave us alone it's a very big Muslim area.

And? do non Muslim men leave women alone ? Is Islamophobia ok because 2 Muslim men didn’t leave you alone ?
