Two UN peacekeepers injured after Israeli tank fires at watchtowerpublished at 12:50 British Summer Time
12:50 BSTBREAKING
Two UN peacekeepers have been injured after an Israeli tank fired towards a watchtower at a UN base in southern Lebanon, the UN says.
According to a statement by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), the observation tower at its headquarters in Naqoura was directly hit, causing the peacekeepers to fall.
"The injuries are fortunately, this time, not serious, but they remain in hospital," the UN says.
It adds that Israeli soldiers also fired at a UN base in Ras Naqoura, "hitting the entrance to the bunker where peacekeepers were sheltering, and damaging vehicles and a communications system".
There's more in their statement which we'll bring you shortly.
UNIFIL is a UN peacekeeping mission created in 1978. It monitors hostilities and helps to ensure humanitarian access to civilians.

What a terrible morning, another two people have been injured after Israel fired at a UN observation post this morning.

EasterIssland · 11/10/2024 08:06

The guardian
UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix has told the security council that the safety of more than 10,400 UN peacekeepers in Lebanon was “increasingly in jeopardy” and operations had virtually halted since late September, coinciding with Israel’s escalation against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
“Peacekeepers have been confined to their bases with significant periods of time in shelter,” he said, adding that the mission - known as Unifil - was ready to support all efforts towards a diplomatic solution.
His comments came after the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon said Israeli forces had deliberately fired on its positions, injuring two peacekeepers from Indonesia. Unifil called attacks on peacekeepers “a grave violation of international humanitarian law”.

UN: "The IDF attacked peacekeeping forces".

IDF: "Yeah, we did."

Poster: "Nah, it's really the IRL version of a 'Spooks' episode."

I'm a little confused why this poster is thinking otherwise too. Both the UN and IDF have confirmed that the injured were UNFIL peace keepers.

Not sure what you’re trying to imply , specially when we’ve proven to you that your hyperbole is wrong. However , have you bothered reading today’s UN announcement ? As it’s not been a single attack but 3 and it’s not been the only threat from IDF this week against them.

So, your version is that it's probably fine because it's been part of some convoluted conspiracy operation. Well, you're welcome to carry on believing whatever stories you want. Meanwhile, in the real world, people will continue to be somewhat concerned about unprovoked attacks against UN peacekeepers and their bases.

The plural of spy is spies, it's etc not ect (ECT is a medical intervention that involves passing electric currents through regions of a person's brain), and if you press the shift key on your keyboard, it enables you to use a capital letter where these are required.

I think they're confusing video games with real life tbh it's late mind can play funny tricks on us

i could be completely wrong, and if i am then i am, all i offered was a different point view, how you choose to view that information is upto you

In the context of war, the presence of multiple covert actors—spies, special forces, and the use of false flag operations—often complicates the narrative surrounding events. Intelligence operatives from various nations may be active, gathering information or engaging in clandestine activities, while special forces conduct missions that may remain undisclosed or disguised. These operations often aim to achieve strategic goals without public knowledge, and can involve misinformation or disinformation campaigns designed to confuse or mislead both the enemy and the public. False flag operations, where one side disguises itself as another to provoke specific reactions, further muddy the waters. As a result, news reports may reflect only fragments of the truth, with conflicting narratives emerging, making it difficult to discern the actual facts or intentions behind specific actions. Understanding these dynamics is crucial when interpreting war-related news, as these layers of covert activity often shape the flow of information.

Kindatired · 10/10/2024 22:42

@onedayatatime
Unifil forces are carrying out their mission. They are risking their lives for peace and have done so for many years. Your comment is offensive.
What has the IDF done for peace? Too busy shooting Palestinians for the last few decades I guess. How many Israeli Americans are on active service with the US defence forces? Not many. Yet Netanyahu will do everything to get American boots on the ground because non-Israeli lives are disposable

@Scirocco

"It's not ok to attack peacekeeping forces."

I totally agree and given that UNFIL doesn't actually do anything in South Lebanon other than get shot at by the Israelis or murdered by Hezbollah then it's pretty pointless being there in the first place so it's probably a lot safer not being there.

Doubt it’s up to you to decide whether these 11k are useful or not in the area. Probably without them the area would be in a worse position

in wars people seem to forget there are various spies, various false flags, various sepcial forces and all these can lead to puzzling or misleading news articles about different events etc

"not sure I get you to be honest … but not sure I’m liking the spirals and twistings you’re trying to do in order to forgive IDFs actions"

I agree it looks like a batshit conspiracy theory but at least it's a different angle and a change from the usual pro Palestinian batshit conspiracy theories promoted by the useful idiots.

EasterIssland · 10/10/2024 22:40

@MetalGearSystem hope this puts your mind at ease and stop twisting what has really happened. Even IDF is recognising it was them

all im suggesting is can we be sure we know all the full facts and can we be fully sure there was no intelligence operations in play that played a part in what happened

This isn't TV. The UN has a basic grasp of geography. Israeli forces attacked UN peacekeepers and their bases.

Scirocco · 10/10/2024 22:33

So, the UN has publicly confirmed that these were their people, on their bases, and your interpretation of that is that it's actually been people playing dress-up?

In your scenario, how did these cosplayers get in to the UN peacekeepers' bases? Or were the bases just pretending to be UNIFIL bases too? If so, what happened to the actual UNIFIL bases on those sites? Or did the UN officials just get confused and read the maps wrong?

In the context of warfare and intelligence operations, the use of deceptive uniforms, false flags, or the impersonation of military forces has long been employed as a tactic to mislead, confuse, or create strategic advantage. This strategy, which is often referred to as "false flag operations" when tied to wider goals of creating misinformation, serves a range of military objectives—from infiltrating enemy lines to discrediting the opposition. Such tactics are not new; historical precedents illustrate how different military forces and intelligence agencies have deployed this method effectively and with varying degrees of success.

doubt UN will be reporting the injuries if it’s members if they weren’t UN members. Also, doubt they’d be reporting that IDF has fired at their cameras if these cameras weren’t theirs

why ? so your saying there has never been any operations with different groups wearing different uniforms to mislead or confuse ?
