After all the news this week regarding IDF threatening peacekeepers in Lebanon this is news now.

from bbc

Two UN peacekeepers injured after Israeli tank fires at watchtowerpublished at 12:50 British Summer Time
12:50 BSTBREAKING
Two UN peacekeepers have been injured after an Israeli tank fired towards a watchtower at a UN base in southern Lebanon, the UN says.
According to a statement by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), the observation tower at its headquarters in Naqoura was directly hit, causing the peacekeepers to fall.
"The injuries are fortunately, this time, not serious, but they remain in hospital," the UN says.
It adds that Israeli soldiers also fired at a UN base in Ras Naqoura, "hitting the entrance to the bunker where peacekeepers were sheltering, and damaging vehicles and a communications system".
There's more in their statement which we'll bring you shortly.
UNIFIL is a UN peacekeeping mission created in 1978. It monitors hostilities and helps to ensure humanitarian access to civilians.

On the shelling of a UNIFIL site.
The following is from Euronews.
"The UNIFIL headquarters and two Italian bases were struck "repeatedly" and "deliberately" by the Israeli army on Thursday morning."
Crosetto ( Italy's defence minister) also specified that there were no injuries amongst the Italian peacekeepers, but that what happened in Lebanon was "totally unacceptable."
He went on to say that "There is no justification for saying that the Israeli armed forced had warned UNIFIL that some of the bases had to be left."

From that, I surmise the story is this.
1 - Israel asks for the bases to be vacated.
2 - Unifil say "No, thank you"
3- Israel says "Go or we fire."
4 - Unifil say "No"
5 - Israel fires a couple of warning shots to show they are being serious.
6 - ?
Anyone want to have a go at predicting 6, 7,and 8 ?

I guess that Israel wants certain observation posts and bases vacated because they lie on or near the IDF's route into Lebanon. If they allow them to remain occupied, the Israelis are worried that either what they are doing will come under scrutiny by UNIFIL or that Hezbollah will park themselves near to the UNIFIL sites and use these as defensive positions.** Were the latter to happen it would be harder to pick off Hezbollah without causing UNIFIL injuries. Israel would prefer to carry on its operation without causing large scale damage to UNIFIL because that would garner even more opprobrium from the rest of the world. I guess that getting UNIFIL to move out of certain locations is just one of their tactics in their pursuit of Hezbollah through southern Lebanon.

** Perhaps someone on here who knows more about military tactics and the terrain around the UNIFIL sites could comment as to whether or not it would be feasible and advantageous for Hezbollah to take up positions close to the bases.

Like Hamas is demonised for breaking international law? Where's the condemnation for using civilian buildings as military bases and hiding behind civilians?

Yet another thread demonising Israel.

If Israel upheld International Law nobody would be demonising them

PollyPaintsFlowers · 11/10/2024 12:30

There's no muddying of the waters where UNRWA is concerned. One of their employees was a top Hamas commander

www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/top-hamas-commander-killed-in-lebanon-was-unrwa-employee-placed-on-administrative-leave/ar-AA1ru27d

And nine UNRWA employees have been fired as they were implicated in the October 7th massacre.

Hasn't stopped UNRWA from being nominated for a Nobel Peace prize though 🙄

The "only liberal democracy" in the Middle East is now attacking UN peacekeepers. They really are a law unto themselves. Is there no one that can rein in these psychopaths?

It seems not, they seem to have completely lost the run of themselves, it's scary to think what they might do next

You are right.
Spain has now joined France in calling for halting arms to Israel. We must hold our government responsible in their complicity in Israeli war crimes.

oh if only they weren’t so hypocrites and they kept selling arms to Israel despite they announced they were stopping ….

ps a very disappointed Spanish who is not surprised about the double face from the Spanish government.

I was not quite sure of their role so looked it up:

UNIFIL FACT SHEET
UNITED NATIONS INTERIM FORCE IN LEBANON

Location:
Lebanon

Headquarters:
Naqoura

Established: March 1978
Local time:
11 October 2024 - 13:06 EEST
Monitoring cessation of hostilities and helping ensure humanitarian access to civilian population
Originally, UNIFIL was created by the Security Council in March 1978 to confirm Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon, restore international peace and security and assist the Lebanese Government in restoring its effective authority in the area. The mandate had to be adjusted twice, due to the developments in 1982 and 2000.

Following the July/August 2006 crisis, the Council enhanced the Force and decided that in addition to the original mandate, it would, among other things, monitor the cessation of hostilities; accompany and support the Lebanese armed forces as they deploy throughout the south of Lebanon; and extend its assistance to help ensure humanitarian access to civilian populations and the voluntary and safe return of displaced persons.

UNIFIL Mandate

According to Security Council resolutions 425 (1978) and 426 (1978) of 19 March 1978, UNIFIL was established to: Confirm the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon. Restore international peace and security. Assist the Government of Lebanon...

Are you serious with that comment? Israel deliberately attack UN forces and you say people are demonising them? The level of delusion of some Israeli apologists is unreal. Take a step back and look objectively at what is happening.

Despite attempts to paint UNFIL as liars, this is clearly nonsense, the IDF need to get rid of them.

The IDF are deliberately targetting UNFIL - a breach of international law - so that they leave, and then the IDF can commit their war crimes with impunity, and suggest anyone reporting them then is a terrorist agent.

They also know that the US and other Western allies will impose no consequences whatsoever for their actions.

The Israeli government need to remember that, although there is a collective name UNIFIL, each battalion represents a different nation who are not going to be too impressed if their soldiers are being put at risk

EasterIssland · 11/10/2024 11:18

I’ve read that those injured today were from the SLanka battalion

Would you prefer people gave out trophies and boxes of chocolates to military forces that are intentionally attacking UN peacekeepers?

Is there actually anything the IDF could do that would give you cause to say "actually, that's kind of not ok?"

Yet another thread discussing what is happening in the middle east. Why get angry with posters here for having an opinion, get angry with the current out of control Israeli government I would be hopping mad if my government were doing this and first to criticise them

Lettherebejustice · 11/10/2024 10:27

Ridiculous! This thread wouldn't be here if the IDF didn't go rogue and start shooting peacekeepers.

VictoryPending · 11/10/2024 10:26

@HelenHen @EasterIssland Agreed and give them a few days and they'll "find" a Hamas or Hezbollah member in imbedded in UNIFIL too.

If the peacekeepers had done their job, Hizbollah wouldn't be operating openly in S Lebanon. What have they be doing over the last 18 years?

In the context of war, the presence of multiple covert actors—spies, special forces, and the use of false flag operations—often complicates the narrative surrounding events. Intelligence operatives from various nations may be active, gathering information or engaging in clandestine activities, while special forces conduct missions that may remain undisclosed or disguised. These operations often aim to achieve strategic goals without public knowledge, and can involve misinformation or disinformation campaigns designed to confuse or mislead both the enemy and the public. False flag operations, where one side disguises itself as another to provoke specific reactions, further muddy the waters. As a result, news reports may reflect only fragments of the truth, with conflicting narratives emerging, making it difficult to discern the actual facts or intentions behind specific actions. Understanding these dynamics is crucial when interpreting war-related news, as these layers of covert activity often shape the flow of information.

What are you even talking about? UN peacekeepers are off limits. Israel are obliged to keep them safe. It is a breach of international law.

There is nothing at all muddy about that!

i feel like unifil is the new unrwa. Wonder how long it’ll take for israel to start spreading lies about them?

It's clearly already started. Muddy the waters first, plant the seeds of doubt... then do whatever they want.

"Doubt it’s up to you to decide whether these 11k are useful or not in the area. Probably without them the area would be in a worse position"

Well they don't seem to have been that effective in stopping the 26,000 rocket attacks against Israel since October last year.

But I agree I don't have the first hand knowledge to assess how effective they are but I'm pretty sure that the parents of the 12 Druze children murdered by a Hezbollah rocket attack whilst playing football would have a much more informed view on how effective UNFIL are at stopping Hezbollah rocket attacks.

How cruel, blaming UN peacekeepers for the murder of the Druze children.

Don't tell me ... it was a mistake?

No comment as of yet from the IDF. Although they didn't say the first attack was a mistake. They fired intentionally but claim they told them to get out the way before they did. There was an uproar yesterday so quite surprising to see another attack so soon after.
