I actually think that if ww2 had happened today, we absolutely would not win...in fact, maybe no one would and it would just go on forever. The whole thing would be shown on social media and people would be up in arms at what they'd be seeing. War is ugly but pre the tech revolution, people were shielded from many of the sights unless they were directly affected.

Back in the days of the vikings we didn't have the means to attack back.

The Spanish Armada we fought back.

We fought the French.

More recent history we fought the Germans who invaded France and launched attacks against various countries including us.

Whatever our response would be, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't involve committing genocide.

I guess we have a previous example of a response that is more recent.

September 11th. Thousands died. The US then launched their war on terror. Eventually they tracked down the then leader and killed him.

I think the Norwegians used to do that, taking away women and children as slaves and slaughtering men or taking the holy men back as slaves as well as raping them. I am certain the situation was not resolved by invading them back and killing them all as well as spreading the warfare to other Norwegian supporters such as Denmark, Sweden and Iceland.

And you would be totally justified. But if the person who thought out these attacks were hiding in Amsterdam, you perhaps would get some raised eyebrows if you flattened whole swathes of the city with bombs, rained missiles on their hospitals, gave warning that whole neighbourhoods had to be evacuated and then rained a few more missiles on the evacuees in supposedly safe areas. "Well, we are looking to kill one person" wouldn´t cut it.
This scenario is only possible in certain areas of the world, and definitely, Europe isn´t one of them.

In relation to Norway ? Apart from some people on fjord cruises being a bit miffed about alcohol prices, our relationship with Norway is very cordial.

And in your scenario would Britain be completely innocent prior to the event and have no idea why this would occur. The Norwegians also have no reason to attack just fancied a killing spree.
