Offer made to Israel

Lyse Doucet (From our own correspondent, BBC R4, 6/10) reported that last week the Jordanian foreign minister said,

"57 Arab and Muslim countries will, right now, guarantee the security of Israel if Israel ends the occupation and agrees to an independent Palestinian state. "

That's a pretty good offer and I find it interesting that it hasn't been more widely publicised.

It doesn't list the 57 who guarantee safety

Bontonbonbon · 07/10/2024 14:10

I would love this to happen but unless one of those 57 states is Iran then it isn’t worth the paper it’s written on. Jordan had always been moderate. Unfortunately they have almost zero sway with Hamas and Hezbollah. What are they going to do to stop those two groups attacking Israel?

As far as I'm aware, Palestine is a state, recognised by 145 UN members. It's officially called the State of Palestine“

Yet the world stands by and watches it being invaded by another state.
**
Unfortunately might is right and Israel has backing from the US. They've made feeble protests about proportionality whilst providing billions in weapons and military support.

Indeed. Our Government meekly follows suit. The UK needs to follow the example of France and stop all arms sales until the Israel Government reigns in. It has gone far beyond retaliation.

It's a disgrace that our military are involved. I don't want to be any part of this and it's not what I voted for. Western intervention has caused enough instability in the ME and is the cause of the government in Iran. We only have to look at the increase in terrorism in Europe and the state of Afghanistan to see the results of interference.

Palestine could offer to guarantee Israel's security by not attacking it.

Why don't they offer that?

Err because they aren't a state and there isn't one single government or organisation that can legitimately speak on behalf of "Palestine"? That's kind of the point isn't it?

May I ask who the 57 countries are? Fo they include Iran, Lebanon or Yemen.

You can read about it here:

Google Budapest Memorandum.

In 1994 US, UK and Russia guaranteed security of Ukraine. As a part of this guarantee Ukraine transferred all of its nuclear weapons to Russia.

Any more questions?

Wow

I think they don't want Palestine to exist, too. Some of the cabinet members have finally openly said so.

That's pretty obvious now. Before the invasion there was very strong language about destroying Palestine and plans were put in place for ethnic cleansing.

The indiscriminate killing, destruction of vital infrastructure and witholding of humanitarian aid speaks for itself.

The problem is that Israel don’t want a Palestinian state to exist.

That was the US, the UK and Russia that were making that guarantee. Would you trust any of those to keep their word ?

For the subject under discussion, fortunately, it is not they that are giving the guarantee.

I'm not sure many people would consider 57 muslim states - many of whom have declared their opposition to Israel - to be inherently more trustworthy than the US, UK and Russia. Why would you think that? And even if they could be trusted today, things change - once upon a time, Iran was a strong ally of Israel. What would've happened if Israel back then had decided to trust them that they would always protect them?!

It's never a good idea for any country to rely entirely on another for their security, and this is even more true for Israel. If the 57 muslim states - or anyone else - want to stop the war, they should offer to help defeat the people who started the war, ie hamas, hezbollah and the iranian regime.

The problem is, the two state solution has been the leading solution for years. If Israel agree to this, Palestine will never allow Israel to exist. Palestine will be recognised as an independent state and they will have no reason not to continue going after Israel once they receive statehood.

How could it stop Israel existing? Israel has more weapons and defences than Palestine could dream off.

Currently Israel is making sure generations of Palestinians will hate it and see it as a target. They either have to wipe out as Palestine as it is, or do something political. I guess they are going option A.

You mean why wouldn't they need to surely. Because weapons act as a deterrent as Ukraine found to its cost

Oh yes, sorry, I was being sarcastic but I mean this is so ludicrous it makes no sense anyway. Obviously Israel has to guarantee its own safety with its own weapons. Now, if those 57 states are serious they need to put some actual proposals on the table.

statsfun · 07/10/2024 00:06

username7891 · 06/10/2024 23:48

Hardly. Who said Israel had to get rid off its weapons?

It all depends on the details of the 2SS.

For example the West Bank is within 100metres, 20km and 40km of Israel's 3 biggest population centres. Too close for missile defence systems to work. It's also 20km from the sea, so a ground assault could quickly cut the country in two.

So Israel allowing militarisation of the West Bank and relaxing their control of weapons imports into a new state located there does exactly mean giving up it's ability to protect its population.

I think the Budapest Memorandum is a very relevant history lesson.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 07/10/2024 00:02

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation is not in a position to guarantee Israeli security.

It is not, unfortunately, a serious offer.

Why would they need to, what with all 57 Arab & muslim states, who have never had any beef with Israel, guaranteeing their safety?

Is this for real??
Why would Israel trust 57 Arab and Muslim countries, many of whom are well known for their hate towards Israel, trust more than I can trust e.g. UK?? Not sure to what degree you're familiar with history, but in 1994 Ukraine and Russia were very close partners.

No country should trust another country/ies their security. Ukraine learn this lesson hard way and I hope Israel learns from mistakes of others.
