Did anyone watch this? So depressing and bleak. For those of you who deny the concern others have for children growing up filled with hate watch this.
The children are more radicalized than their parent/grandparent.

Guardian and Telegraph review for balance.

State of Rage review – every minute of this documentary has a quote to stop the heart

This urgent, illuminating film follows a Palestinian and Israeli family in the West Bank to create a bold and vivid picture of how fierce conflict affects people’s psyches

When I posted about this documentary I thought it would be an undeniably uncomfortable watch whichever way your sympathies lie. I thought there might be some push back even though the overriding take away is ultimately more important.
That's why I posted reviews from both The Guardian and The Telegraph both of which give it 4/5. The Telegraph is a 110% pro Israel paper just in case anyone is not aware.

@StupidFarang Your push back against it is particularly disappointing/not valid because you have not even watched it. If you watch it and all you feel is injustice about the representation of Israel then I think that in itself reflects what the documentary is showing.

@PinkStringofHearts Its interesting to see the Israeli settler child talk about how beautiful it is and why would you ever want to leave ( as an aside to that he expects the Palestinians to leave) whilst the Palestinian child talks about the freedom to travel and leave. That's the underlying psyche of one who has a choice and one who does not.
But the whole situation is awful for all the children in different ways.

Edited

I think what struck me was how scared they all were. The 16yo Israeli girl was full of bravado but clearly she was scared too. It's a tricky one because in my head I was like well, why doesn't the mom just move? Your kids are clearly suffering the effects of the lifestyle choice to be an illegal settler, it clearly troubled the mom. Move back to France or move to Israel, take your children away from the toxicity, after all like you say they have the choice. It was a stark contrast to the Palestinian family who could not leave their home some days.

I suppose that's where the indoctrination of ideology comes into play. Whether that is the settler ideology or the ideology some Palestinians have that it is their duty to free their people at whatever cost to themselves.

I don't know, it just left me sad for them all really and I don't see how the cycle can end until Palestinians are given self determination because unsurprisingly they won't stop until they get it. Unfortunately the doc left me with the feeling that it will go very far the other way instead.

Yes I understand it is an extremist minority view but when it is state supported the optics become wider than that

And Palestinian terrorists are also sponsored by their government. Literally. They give families money if their family member commits a terrorist act in Israel / against Israelis. This has been going on for absolutely years.

Don't get me wrong, I detest violent illegal settlers just as much as I detest Palestinian terrorists. They're exactly the same and they should all be left to rot in jail. But it's important to see the full picture here and not ignore parts of it.

StupidFarang · 01/10/2024 10:49

And it's not about being pro or anti israel. It's just stating objective facts.

PinkStringofHearts · 01/10/2024 10:48

StupidFarang · 01/10/2024 09:47

Some Palestinians live in Israel, most don't.
Why are you commenting if you don't know that basic fact?

Edited

I didn't think I had to state the obvious that not all do. The guy that runs my local greengrocer is Palestinian and we live very far from Israel or Palestine.

Its not representative full stop and wasn't intended to be. No problem with the film chosing extremists but it doesn't represent israeli psyche as per the reviews. No more than the family in the NYT article do.
Sorry that disappoints you.

If you are saying that you know more about Israel than Palestine then why were you commenting at all about a documentary about Palestine(and trying to make it all about Israel) if you are not in a place to judge?

Watch it or don't I don't care but derailing a thread because the subject matter makes you feel uncomfortable isn't cool.

On a note actually relevant to the thread I do hope that the 10yo Palestinian girl gets her wish to be a flight attendant and feel free. I thought she was very elequent in parts where she spoke about her feelings.

What on earth are you talking about? The documentary was very clearly about israel and palestine. And I'll comment on what I like 👍

PinkStringofHearts · 01/10/2024 09:22

StupidFarang · 01/10/2024 09:08

Because I know israeli society much better than I do Palestinian society so im not in a place to judge. And because the review said it was an insight into the israeli psyche and it's not, it's an insight into an extremist psyche. Hth.

Not saying the implications are not huge or that they shouldn't have made a film on this family given all that's at stake and the situation. I take issue with it somehow being an insight into the israeli psyche which it is not. Even with power, still an extremist view (which is why it's so dangerous)

StupidFarang · 01/10/2024 09:08

PinkStringofHearts · 01/10/2024 09:01

How is it a personal attack to say that you seem uncomfortable with the idea of the documentary when you first posted a completely unrelated article saying oh they didn't feature someone like this. Then went on to stress that there are perfectly normal(I presume that is what you were getting at with the 2 civil servant parents) families living in the occupied West Bank. Why did you do that if you weren't feeling defensive and uncomfortable?

The fact that you didn't even acknowledge the Palestinian family in any of your posts also makes me think that there is some discomfort there? Why did you choose to focus entirely on Israelis?

No need for personal attacks or rudeness thank you. You don't know me or what I engage in. Very condescending actually.

Literally the review said that it's an insight into the Israeli psyche. It's not. It's an insight into an extremist psyche.

I was planning to watch it. After that unpleasant dig and condescending comment, I'm thinking i might give it a miss now.

That's a whole other issue. And, yes, you are right in that and it's a massive problem. It's still an extremist and minority view but a vrey dangerous one with a lot of power.

Oh sorry I was confused because I did not get what you got from the reviews. Even if the focus is on extermist view, the extremists as far as I am aware have not been arrested or cautioned for their views and actuons but actively supported by the current government isn't that the issue? Not that they are extremists, which I have no doubt they are, but they are allowed carry on with their actions relatively easily

Nobody said that?

I understand that you feel defensive of Israel or whatever but you are off base here.

Nobody is leaping in with articles about Palestinian peacemakers going look, look over here or asking why they aren't showing a Palestinian family who live in Israel in a doc about the West Bank.

It's called streets of rage and showed what contributes to that rage on both sides. The idea of that seems to make you uncomfortable and I think you are probably exactly the type of person who would benefit from sitting in your discomfort and watching it.

I haven't watched it but read the review which said it is representative of Israeli youth and some posters here who spoke about how this is an insighgt into how Israelis feel.

Plus, even if you are talking about just the West Bank, Havat Gilad is still extreme - and then to find there two kids whose dad had been murdered. They didn't interview a child who lives in a flat in Maale Adumim with two civil servant parents working in Jerusalem. But again, that's hardly interesting film-making. It's an extreme and still valid to make a film on that but let's remember it is just that.

The Palestinian family lived in the Jenin refugee camp which is also quite extreme. The children there were exposed to quite extreme things that if the documentary makers picked a Palestinian family living on a quiet farm I'm sure would be quite different. They clearly picked 2 families who are in the 'thick of it' as such. It wasn't oh look at this lovely Palestinian family and this rotten Israeli one. They certainly wouldn't have shown Palestinian militants, a kid with a gun and children talking about becoming martyrs if they were going for poor angelic Palestinian angle. They showed 'good' and 'bad' for both.

Perhaps you should watch it before you leaping in with assumptions.

Interesting choice of one of the most radical populations in Israel society.

For a little perspective, an article in the NY Times about someone else whose mother was murdered and presumably HIS children would not be of so much interest to the film makers despite the absolutely brutal murder of their beloved grandmother.
