What does changing a username achieve? It's an anonymous form your username is linked to your account no matter what username you use. I am not sure why changing your username would address feeling unsafe on an anonymous forum? The only reason I can see is that people want to deceive their fellow posters. I don't recognize your username so what have you posted under before? And why would me knowing that make you feel unsafe? If I send you a pm it will still go to your account no matter what username you use

Just because you don't understand something doesn't mean it isnt real or legit fgs.

@Dulra No idea at all why Mumsnet users from minority religious or ethnic groups might feel the need to name change? If you felt some users made you - and possibly the rest of your community on here - feel unsafe, I guarantee you would name change.

I don't understand why the suggestion of antisemitic or terrorist-supporting posts being flagged to the appropriate bodies would make a person uneasy if they don't think it applies to them? What do you find threatening about tackling online antisemitism and radicalisation?

Well exactly. Don't suppprt terrorism, its highly unlikely you'll be looked into by the very over-stretched security services.

whataclownshow · 01/09/2024 10:35

And this idea that you're being monitored is ridiculous to the point of laughable. If someone makes themself a prolific poster on these threads, often repeating the same schtick time and again, do you honestly think that username isn't going to register? Are we not allowed to look at usernames now?

I've reported plenty pro-terrorist posts, thankfully HQ does tend to delete those, but don't pretend for one minute they don't exist and you haven't seen them.

Well this has taken a weird turn. Just for the record I do not work for the security services and have not reported anyone to them for supporting terrorism (though there have been a lot of posts in support of the terrorists, some of which I have reported to mumsnet). I would have thought its an entirely normal thing to remember people you have spoken to before or read their posts and a sign that you are taking them seriously.

Quite...I recognise your username as well as others not because I'm monitoring you or keeping tabs on anyone but because you're a regular poster and I read these boards a lot and comment occasionally.

@Auvergne63 particularly when there have indeed been cases of posters being told they're being monitored and being accused of supporting terrorism (which is a criminal offence).

I remember the threats to be reported to the UK organisations dealing with antisemitism or being called anti semitic and Hamas supporter when daring to voice our outrage at the actions of the Israeli government. All very serious accusations and designed to shut down any discussions. They didn't achieve their goals though.
I was visiting family in France this week and the feeling I got from discussing the "conflict" was sheer anger at the lack of actions from Macron and his government. The word genocide was used repeatedly too.
I also saw many cars with a sticker of the Palestinian flag on.
I believe our politicians should be held legally responsible for facilitating this slaughter. Doing nothing when you could is immoral.

Auvergne63 · 01/09/2024 08:28

How interesting that, apparently, expressing a feeling of unease is dismissed as nonsense.
I find posters that, despite overwhelming evidence from reputable sources, still defend the actions of the Israeli government in Gaza as beyond understanding. To state that 40,000 slaughtered (so far) can't possibly be considered a genocide is, well, abhorrant, in my opinion and reflects the lack of comprehension of what constitutes a genocide,
Both Hamas and the Israeli government have openly made genocidal statements. One a terrorist organisation, the other a democracy.
History will not be kind to either of them.

PeasfullPerson · 31/08/2024 20:57

I would like to remind people that the indirect deaths, which I am sure the government of Israel will be held accountable for, if not straight away, but at some moment in time, will most likely far outnumber 40,000.

Firstly, it is unsettling to know that you appear to keep tabs on posters.
Secondly, English isn't my first language and, at times, I have difficulty getting the meaning behind some sentences.
Finally, I wasn't asking you to answer my question. I am sure the original poster does not need a spokesperson and is fully able to answer for herself/himself.

I'm not keeping tabs on posters! What a silly comment. But I do notice people who crop up a lot - doesn't everyone? As @Miffylou said, its an open discussion.

People keep changing their usernames though. Loads of new usernames on here recently who seem to know posters very well so they're obviously name changes. No idea why people need to do that, maybe someone can explain the point of it to me?

It meant that I think people on this thread would probably be horrified by, and condemn, anyone saying that their aim was to kill everyone in the world of a particular race - except, apparently, when Hamas say that about Jews.

You are completely misrepresenting what I said which I already addressed with you back when the comment was first made so why are you repeating it out of context?

I was responding to @Auvergne63 , who said they wanted elaboration.

Dulra · 31/08/2024 20:17

Miffylou · 31/08/2024 19:55

First, nonsense. Do you not follow conversations on topics which interest you? A lot of people do.

Secondly, what did you not understand about "I wonder whether you would be so uninterested about blatant racism against any other race"? It meant that I think people on this thread would probably be horrified by, and condemn, anyone saying that their aim was to kill everyone in the world of a particular race - except, apparently, when Hamas say that about Jews.

Finally, I am perfectly happy for @SharonEllis to join in the discussion. This is not a private conversation.

Do you always invalidate people's feelings? You might not find it unsettling but I do.

Surely you recognise various posters on here, especially those who post a lot?

Zzippit · 31/08/2024 18:44

Is it keeping tabs on posters or is it just that the same posters say the same things over and over again on every thread so their names and posts are recognisable? It's not necessarily anything sinister.

I don’t support current Israeli actions on the West Bank or in Gaza but talk about the Gaza population being "close to being wiped out" is absolute blatant nonsense. The UN estimates the population of Gaza at about 2.1 million, and Hamas say about 40,000 have been killed. That's about 2%. Terrible, but not "close to being wiped out".
This number does not include the people buried under the rubbles, or the ones who have died of starvation or from the lack of medicines for diabetes/ cancer/ , or the future deaths which will be directly attributed to the actions of the Israeli government's actions in Gaza.
You’re right that Israel has the power to do it though - if they really wanted to, they could have done it months ago. So obviously they don’t want to.
Even the Israeli government knows that that's a line not to cross. Instead it is done by stealth through constant bombing, the denial of vital ressources for life ( food, meds, the destruction of water infrastructures and so on).

I wonder whether you would be so uninterested about blatant racism against against any other race.
Could you, please, elaborate on this?

Could you,please, elaborate on this

For context that poster was responding to something I had posted:

Them:especially if the would-be terrorists who have vowed to murder your whole race live in a neighbouring country.
Me: I'm more concerned about the current race of people in Gaza who are close to being wiped out by an army that has the means and military power to do it.
Them: wonder whether you would be so uninterested about blatant racism against any other race.
