I see the old thread is sadly almost full. I wonder how many of these I will start? 😢

Oxfam has it right in their new ad

"Stop arming Israel".

It would be right if also they suggested Iran stopped arming Hamas and Hezbollah. Guess that's not important 😕

That cockroach quite clearly has the face of Yahya Sinwar wearing a green Hamas headband. I don't agree with the use of this imagery in any context but it's misleading to say the cartoon was dehumanising Palestinian people as a whole when it's so obviously referring to the IDF defeating Sinwar/Hamas, albeit presented in a tasteless and offensive manner.

Edited

Yahya Sinwar is a Palestinian is he not? So if this Palestinian is a cockroach with blood dripping from fangs and demon tongue, then wouldn’t all Palestinians similarly be cockroaches? Similar images have been banned for dehumanising an ethnic group even when it is only featuring a known person of importance from that ethnicity.

As it is, I have another two dehumanising Israeli cartoons for you. Look at who is being portrayed as a human and who is being portrayed as a wasp or cockroach. How would you feel if Nethanyu had been drawn as something other than a human?

'Your Village Should Be Burned'|
Arab Israeli Girl, 12, Suspended From School After Empathizing With Gazan Children

In a class discussion, the girl said that children in Gaza were dying of hunger. Classmates said her village should burn, and allegedly attacked her after class. The school told parents said they suspended her to protect her, but Education Ministry officials accused her of 'inciting against the army'

A Be'er Sheva high school suspended an Israeli Arab pupil last week after she expressed solidarity with Gazan children.

but Education Ministry officials accused her of 'inciting against the army'
Accused a 12 year old of this!!!

No - I am not pointing at anyone. It’s more the thread title and the relentless links . I understand that you may feel it is bearing witness.

If it makes you uncomfortable that's fair enough. It should, because what's happening is hideous.

I'm not going to stop talking about what's happening because it makes you uncomfortable to witness it or hear people talk about it. You can always avoid these threads if you prefer not to see what's happening.

stormy4319trevor · 23/09/2024 22:58

@Limesodaagain I don't think you were insincere or minimising. I understand your concerns around anti-semitism, but I hope that those who truly want peace care about the rights and equality of all people, whatever their religion or ethnicity..

It’s the 4th thread with this title and topic. I tell you something that would stop us posting relentless links : Israeli citizens (not all I know but some of them) stopping treating Palestinians they way they do. And government taking action with those that have extremist views and behaviour, but this will not happen as the government itself is feeding this ideology of Palestinians bad let’s displace and kill them

ScrollingLeaves · 23/09/2024 22:51

I can’t understand the objection to ‘e c*’ either, especially as in the context of the video - the night boat tour for extremist Israelis to watch Palestinians being killed in Gaza which is alight and glowing with explosions from Israeli bombs, while the boat trippers talk of how they’ll move in there once the [Palestinians are dead or have left] - epitomises the idea of ‘e c’ there is no other word here.

What would you have people do? Ignore what's happening? Look away? We owe it to the innocent people who have been murdered and who have had their lives changed forever by this conflict to not look away.

For centuries, history was written by whichever army crushed the other. Now, though, history can still see what innocent people have endured and maybe, one day, that can lead to justice, or at least maybe efforts to protect others from the same fate.

We owe it to innocent people suffering and dying in Palestine (and Lebanon too), just as much as we owe it to the innocent people who suffered and died on the 7th October. We should not ignore what was and is done.

@Limesodaagain I can't agree with 'relish' either. People are horrified and grieved. I understand you think there's a lack of balance. I also agree with your view that there are extremists on all sides. But the reality is there is a catastrophe happening right now to the Palestinian people, and resolving that is the priority for many people, not seeking reasons to blame them for any extremists in their midst. Nor should Israelis be blamed for the extremists amongst them, but I think discussing the actions of aggressive settlers does not do that.

Fair enough! I was called out for a comment about extremism and told I was insincere or minimising the suffering. I don’t think I was either of those things. But , based on your answer, we probably largely agree .

Sorry - I am not “criticising Palestinians “. I am criticising extremists on both sides. As to what I am hoping to achieve…not much sadly. I’ve seen some really quite unpleasant examples of anti semitism during marches in London and I think the rhetoric in real life situations here in UK has become inflammatory and potentially dangerous. It’s right to care about the Gazan people but there’s a relish in describing every piece of Israeli wrong doing that seems unbalanced to me. Especially while Hamas are still holding hostages.

@Limesodaagain There are extremists on both sides, you are right. I think the focus on Israeli bad behaviour is because they have the stronger position and are able to enact this bad behaviour through the occupation. Only one side is starving and dying in huge numbers. You can criticise Palestinians as @ConnieCounter has said, but what does this achieve for you? Is it a justification for continuing the occupation or the current approach to Gaza?

To be honest - if people posted a video of some really horrendous behaviour from Palestinians and then spent time discussing the horrible behaviour as if it was in some way typical of Palestinians I probably would want to say “They’re not representative of all Palestinians - they’re are extremists on both sides”.
This thread is all about the terrible things Israel is doing….. I understand people want to vent and share their feelings but I do think it is a bit of an echo chamber …

There was a separate bunch of threads about what Hamas were doing - 'The reality of Hamas', or something like that. This thread's 'The reality of what Israel is doing ', so the post content focusing on the actions of Israeli forces and other groups shouldn't be unexpected.

If you posted a video of Palestinians on a boat watching a part of Israel getting bombed whilst they discussed their plans to steal the land my contribution wouldn't be "but Israelis are bad too full stop". Because it's a pointless contribution unless you're trying to make the point that it isn't actually that bad actually because other people are probably bad too.

I might not have commented only you often make posts like this.

I think my point was really very clear . You prefer to focus only on Israelis who behave in terrible ways and refer to anyone who mentions an alternative view as “minimising “ or “justifying “ . The suffering in Gaza is horrific but the ridiculous way some people police the threads and only permit criticism of Israel has become very predictable.

Totally know what you mean. It stops some posting. We all have different views and yet some don't accept that at all, try to police the threads, and tell people what they think they are saying 🙄

What point were you trying to make? You basically just said there are bad Palestinians too so...so what? I think it's reasonable to interpret your post as either minimising what these extremists are doing or justifying it because other people are bad too.

It's often used about other posters too, rather than genuinely awful people in news reports.

Yes, I think it is usually directed at posters or Trump.

Well I can’t help what a random person on mumsnet thinks about my sincerity.
What ever your assumptions my statement is still true. And instead of acknowledging the point I made you chose to imply I’m insincere.
