I see countless UK run accounts like this. Hundreds of comments just like this.

Why? It's horrendous. How can we let this be said in Britain without any consequences?

You couldn't start conversations about other communities and not end up reported to the police.

Trying to conflate Zionism with racism and homophobia is neither moderate, thoughtful nor well-informed.

When you have the leaders of Zionist political parties like Belazel Smotrich and Itmar Ben Gvir publicly making homophobic and/or racist statements, an association is made like it or not by their party members and the public.

I agree outright conflation would not be on and I would counsel against anyone trying to do that.

In a sense, that's right: people don't care about my religious practice (or lack of), what zionism means to me, or my thoughts on how to build peace in the ME. What they care about is an opportunity to perform how virtuous they are by pressurising Jews to disavow zionism.

A bit like those BLM activists touring restaurants forcing customers to recite 'black lives matter' as though that was going to help destroy actual racism.

Spot on, again.

israelilefty · 27/06/2024 20:12

"A Jewish poster above has told us how she is preparing her DC for antisemitism at university and her post was met with a diatribe about Netanyahu".

Exactly this. I can absolutely resonate with Ketzele's position. She portrayed a reasonable position and the immediate reaction of the next post was to delegitimise her by talking over and implying that she was not progressive enough. Sadly, Ketzele's post resonated with me 100%. In my experience, the above interaction is entirely standard, and it dismisses the validity of the political position of pretty much all Jewish and Israeli people except for the most extreme anti-Zionists.

Very few people care what religion you are or are not, they do care what you do.

Would you say the same to all British people, or just the Jewish ones?

I’d be happy to see not just Netanyahu but everyone who participated in this slaughter held to account. I think what the people of Gaza and all Palestinians need is for the killing to stop and to be allowed to speak for themselves. How anyone can see even the tip of the iceberg that is shown of Palestinian suffering and support the state perpetrating the slaughter is beyond me. Very few people care what religion you are or are not, they do care what you do.

This is such an awful response to someone talking about how they expect their dc to encounter antisemitism at university.

And as for this: "Very few people care what religion you are or are not, they do care what you do." I mean wtaf. Is that also aimed at the PP and her student DC? So awful.

TheSh0ppingForecast · 27/06/2024 19:57

Jewish people are on this thread saying, "We find the term "zio" used in this way offensive and antisemitic." Why is it so hard to listen and say, " oh OK, thanks for explaining. I'll refrain from doing that in future."?

A Jewish poster above has told us how she is preparing her DC for antisemitism at university and her post was met with a diatribe about Netanyahu.

I'm guessing most of the posters on here would describe themselves as progressive and antiracist and against discrimination. Why the blind spot when it comes to Jews? Can you not hear yourselves?

Not sure why your response to someone talking about tryng to avoid abuse due to having a Jewish name is "very few people care what your religion is".

Comedycook · 27/06/2024 19:44

Very few people care what religion you are or are not, they do care what you do

I'm afraid this just isn't true... otherwise how do you explain the hatred which is being shown towards British Jews right now who have absolutely no say in what is happening in the ME?

Ketzele · 27/06/2024 19:43

I wish that were true, but my experience of a lifetime defensively explaining myself is that you don't have to be an aggressor, an Israeli, or even a practising Jew to be given plenty of grief by plenty of people.

SighingMum23 · 27/06/2024 19:42

Have you seen how many "proud Zionists"

TomeTome · 27/06/2024 19:36

Ketzele · 27/06/2024 19:27

My dd is off to uni this year and we have had 'the talk' about how to deal with being challenged to prove she isn't a genocidal maniac on the basis of her Jewish name. I had the same happen to me when I was at uni in the 80s, and JewSocs were getting banned.

How many days of my life have I wasted since trying to find common ground with people who don't know the history, don't want to listen, just want to enjoy their frenzy of self righteous condemnation. Even if I start off (as I often do) by making it clear that I would be happy to see Netanyahu in prison.

Most people are rightly clear that they want the suffering to end. But they don't want it enough to read a book, or accept that the situation is bloody complicated, or come up with any thoughtful, constructive ideas for peace. So much more fun to just shout at Jews.

As it ever was. And that's so blisteringly useless to the people of Gaza, who don't need more demagogues in their lives.

LordPercyPercy · 27/06/2024 19:24

Or perhaps they just disagree with the Zionist colonisation of Palestine and wouldn’t care what religion the oppressors came from because it’s about their actions not their origins.

I suppose that's one way to reduce the highly complex history of a region to a stupid tiktok soundbite.

Yeah, claiming that people don't mean Jew when they say Zionist then heading off to the Jewish Mumsnetters section to post crap suggests that people do mean Jew after all.

Vittuunterroristit · 27/06/2024 19:14

TinyYellow · 27/06/2024 18:35

So by believing that it was wrong to kill and displace Palestinians so that Jewish problem can have Israel is antisemitic in your opinion?

Is that right?

We’re all supposed to believe that a Jewish state is so important that it was worth all the murders and refugees and suffering that has occurred in its name since it’s creation?

Thinking that the current state of Israel should not exist is in my opinion often rooted in antisemitism in my opinion. If yoy want to extrapolate anything from that to make me look like some kind of villian then knock yourself out.

Vittuunterroristit · 27/06/2024 19:12

Vittuunterroristit · 27/06/2024 12:15

There was also an AMA recently from a Jewish poster who lives in Israel. it was such a shitshow it ended up get taken down. Some of the posters who made the most blatantly antisemitic comments are still around. One of them even then went onto the Jewish Mumsnetters board to post their antisemitism there. So no, people aren't more polite to Jewish people.

Wow. Call a spade a spade why don't you! Suggest you read up on history of the region before bandying the term colonisation so freely.
I'm out of here while AntiSemitism and AntiZionism is alive and well and living on Mumsnet.

TinyYellow · 27/06/2024 18:59

blackcherryconserve · 27/06/2024 18:54

In my experience as a Jew being called a Zio is insulting. I'm pretty well sure that people using the term mean it as an insult and are therefore anti Semitic. Perhaps they are merely ignorant.

Whilst I don’t disagree with your initial point that other communities do come in for abuse, and equally don’t get moderated as robustly as they should, I completely disagree with the rest of what you are saying.

you are completely misrepresenting Zionism.
Zionism has both a political and religious meaning, neither of which are the bloodthirsty violent ideology you are making it out to be

I think the right wing Israeli government did so much harm in the completely vitriolic and arrogant way that they asserted that the land was theirs, and it would be achieved by hook or by crook. They demonstrated no sympathy whatsoever for those murdered by settlers, and this has been shown on social media repeatedly, and I think many associate this with zionism. Ben Gvir, Daniella Weiss etc etc, really did come across bloodthirsty and the violence has been ongoing for decades, in the name of zionism?
ETA: I don't know if they are representative of general Israeli ideology, but they did the state absolute no favours at all wrt garnering sympathy on a global level.

Yes they do. But sometimes, often, when people say ‘Zios’ they genuinely mean Zionists. In the same way that people would use the word Marxist or socialist or communist.

Insisting that anytime someone uses the word Zionist they are automatically being anti semitic is just a way to shut down debate and exclude other sides of a valid argument.

This and exactly this, thank you! 🙏- we must empower moderate, thoughtful and well informed discourse. There are enough voices of division and oppression here as in other places.

The irony 🙄

Anti Semites hide their anti semitism by calling Jews ' Zios'. That IS antisemitic not anti Zionist because these anti Semites are tarring ALL Jews as Zionists. FYI many Jews are just that, not Zionist at all.
