News seem to indicate a war between Israel and Hezbollah seems imminent , hopefully they’re wrong

Biden has said they’ll support Israel and several ships are on their way to support Israel

from what I’ve read , hezbollah has got more and stronger weapons than Hamas in Gaza

I can only think about how many innocent civilians are going to die because incompetent politicians and many times men.

"A Lebanese woman stands in the face of occupation soldiers and their bullets while trying to return to her hometown of Maroun al-Ras in southern #Lebanon."

Thankfully, journalists in Lebanon have confirmed that she is still alive, unlike the others killed by the IDF.

Southern Lebanese civilians decided to return to their villages in groups today as the ceasefire ended with the IDF failing to withdraw as per the terms of the ceasefire.

It's up to the Lebanese government to get the guarantors of the ceasefire to enforce the terms.

This us a fair balanced comment, that I agree with.

Do you think Israel should continue it's expansion into the West Bank?

Do you think Israel should withdraw all its citizens to 1967 borders?

Do you support Donald Trump, and many Israelis' calls for a relocation of Palestinians from Gaza to Jordan in order to allow Israelis to settle Gaza?

Which of these should the UK support by supplying arms and advanced military aid to Israel?

Gunnersforthecup · 08/10/2024 21:46

I don't support "the conflict" nor do I support Netanyahu. But I do support the continued existence of Israel. And I think that we should continue to be the ally of Israel.

As regards public opinion in the UK, I think most people would like the war in Gaza to be at an end, but would also support the continued existence of Israel.

This us a fair balanced comment, that I agree with.

Israel's targeted strikes. Are they somehow better because they are not on the back of a bike with a gun in their hand when they murder, in cold blood ,children and innocent civilians?

73 people killed of which 23 children.
Six people affiliated to Hezbollah but not senior.

Among the dead were babies only a few months old, like Nouh Kobeissi in apartment -2B. In apartment -1C, school teacher Abeer Hallak was killed alongside her husband and three sons. Three floors above, Amal Hakawati died along with three generations of her family - her husband, children and two granddaughters.

Ashraf and Julia both smiling for the camera, with a background of greenery. Ashraf has dark hair and a beard and is wearing a dark shirt, and Julia has lighter brown hair - long and wavy - and has brightly painted lips.

The missile strike on a Lebanese apartment block targeting Hezbollah left mostly civilians dead, BBC finds.

Hezbollah is significantly better armed and more powerful than the Lebanese government. That’s why the Lebanese army has basically pulled out of southern Lebanon and is leaving Israel to get on with it. They’d welcome the removal of Hezbollah who were also persecuting Lebanese Christians.

@SunnyZebra and

@mouthpipette Thank you for answering. I know it is tricky when it is a hypothetical question and difficult to explain.

Basically then Lebanon is happy for Israel to get on with it [the assassinations] even at the cost of Lebanese citizens getting killed,

and Syria the same

though the U.K. (in the case where someone like Nasrallah, say, was hiding in London) would not allow Israel to use this bombing + collateral method here , but would want to use another counter terrorism method instead.

(I realise why Israel is after Hezbollah leaders, but was wondering about Lebanon and Syria allowing bombing + collateral damage to kill them.)

mouthpipette · 09/10/2024 00:27

Hezbollah seemed to have got dug in and are fighting the defensive war they have been waiting for. But in amongst the few "gains" are heavy losses.

I guess that the priority for Israel has been, and still is, the destroying of missiles and missile launching sites, A number of strikes have caused secondary explosions. Israel has pretty much air supremacy, so the delivery of accurately targeted strikes is made that much easier. In addition there's some "shock and awe", such as pagers, and targeted assassinations. The killing of Nasrallah came about through intelligence. Hezbollah leaks badly. The Israelis probably know a lot more.

And through all of this, thousands are losing their lives and millions more are having their lives pulled apart, and it's obscene and it should stop.

Yes, but say they were armed and inside a building I think we’d need special forces.

If we would arrest Hezbollah members hiding in the U.K. instead of letting Israel bomb them ( and whoever, whatever else was around), why can’t the Lebanese/Syrian government send army to arrest Hezbollah people Israel wants targeted instead of Israel bombing the whole section where they are? Does Israel give those governments the chance?

Of course we would send in some adequately armed personnel in if they were armed, or whatever it is that happens in such a situation. How would I know the details? FFS, this can't actually be a real conversation.Do you think Israel would be going in if Lebanon had sorted Hezbollah out & had prevented them from continuously firing rockets into Israel for the last year?

Israel is targeting specific members of Hezbollah by bombing where they believe them to be. One by one.

When there is one particular person Israel wants to kill, this leads to Israel bombing them in another sovereign country and inevitably a lot of other innocent civilians of other countries being killed or wounded too.

Presumably Israel is at war with Hezbollah not the whole of the Lebanese or Syrians.

I am not talking about Israel soldiers fighting Hezbollah fighters and why they are doing so, but about the system Israel is employing for assassinations.

Why not carpet bomb ? It’s working “well” in Gaza and Lebanon. Hamas is done after a year , oh wait , that’s not what it looks like in reality

Edited

Erm because we are a democratic country with the rule of law and so we would arrest them so Israel has no need to attack us. Hamas is the deranged terrorist organisation in charge of Gaza that launched an attack on Israel. WTF?

I saw on the BBC news at 10 that Israel carried out a strike in Syria.
https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/israeli-strike-targets-residential-building-syrias-damascus-say-state-media-2024-10-08/

As they were targeting Hezbollah ( incidentally killing seven civilians including women and children, wounding eleven others and damaging private buildings) I wonder what would happen if any Hezbollah or Hamas members were thought to be hiding in London? I presume in that case Israel would not bomb there. But then would we probably send in the SAS? I was wondering hypothetically.

We would arrest them.

Didn't Hezbollah drive ISIS out of Lebanon and fights them in Syria? @Silence1

I think they did. And didn't Israel take in wounded ISIS fighters, patch them up and then allow them to go back into Syria so that they could carry on fighting Hezbollah?

The thing is that some do not agree that continued existence of Israel is being assured by the behaviour of the current government, what is happening at the hands of certain settlers in the West Bank, and the destruction of Gaza and the killing thousands of Palestinians including women, children, old men, doctors and journalists.

What I want is for us to withdraw any opinion or support from this conflict with that far right Israeli government. In any way. And I think we will regret not doing so. I see that if you support the conflict you may want to present a different perspective.

From the article
"
He said MI5 was alive to the possibility that Iran “could, in principle, try to repurpose” that effort to focus on other targets in the UK if Tehran felt that Britain had become a party to the conflict in the Middle East by supporting Israel in its anticipated retaliation to last week’s ballistic missile attack."

Yes, I quoted that bit above with useful words in bold. I think you need some perspective.
