The footage coming out of this this absolutely sickening. So many precious children killed. I've never seen anything like it. Poor innocent babies.

It's great that they managed to rescue 4 hostages (though it seems they killed others) but the human cost of that for Palestinians (and potentially other hostages) is absolutely obscene and not acceptable.

'This is what a massacre looks like': Israeli bombardment kills more than 200 in central Gaza

The Al-Aqsa Hospital has been overwhelmed by the dead and wounded arriving following the bombing.

You do understand that Hamas embed themselves and the hostages in civilian areas, right? And you understand they do this so that death tolls will be unnecessarily and indeed appallingly high?

This is a war.

You've made your point now. Do you think you could just let this thread to be about the innocent people including small children that were killed today?

Why should Israel accept a ceasefire when Hamas won’t agree to return the hostages?

there is no guarantee whatsoever that these four would have been released if Israel had agreed a ceasefire, indeed I think it is highly unlikely.

Why on earth should Israel agree a unilateral ceasefire?

You need to do a bit of reading on the ceasefires that Israel have rejected.

Israel has the right to fight Hamas. Those killed today weren’t Hamas. And this is not a war.

In wars people die. When you are fighting a terrorist state which is willing to sacrifice its people, more civilians are going to die.

Personally, I believe all lives are valuable. I certainly don’t think any ethnicity or nationality has more or less value than another and I hope you weren’t implying that. I believe Israel has the right to fight Hamas and to rescue hostages. I understand that many people don’t agree with me but that’s my belief.

Seriously? Go educate yourself on the rules and laws of war before you utter such ridiculous statements. War does not give you a free pass to kill indiscriminately and starve a population

Accept one of the multiple ceasefire that Israel had been offered. These 4 + those that have been killed today would have been released.

Why do you think Palestinian lives are so indispensable that they are worth less than anyone else's? Why do you think it is ok that 200 had to die to save 4. Lives are lives not one is more or less than another so I would suggest don't murder to rescue

I’ll askyou again - how should Israel have responded? Just except their country being invaded and their citizens being killed and kidnapped ? Should the UK have ignored WW2 - we have just celebrated?? D Day when those who were trying to impose their will on others where overcome - tragic loss of life but it has given us freedoms we would not have had.

Should Palestinians just accept what Israel have done to them? What do you think the correct response to 1% of your population being killed is? Do you think maybe the tragic loss of Israeli lives in the future might give them the freedom that they don't have under Israeli occupation? This is the logical conclusion to what you are saying.

Sussurations · 08/06/2024 20:22

I’m not sure how that’s directly relevant to the question about the hostage rescue therealcookiemonster. I deplore the situation in the West Bank.

If you're trying to justify today's massacre I've no interest in talking to you.

If you think massacring 210 people today, not to mention the other 36,000+ who have been killed, is reasonable because of what Hamas did there's no point.

As the other thread has been deleted I will post this again here. I will also reiterate that I am pleased to see these hostages go home, especially Noa, but heartbroken for the civilians who have been caught up in this and won’t ever be going home again. I am pained by the ignorance and indifference shown by some towards their suffering.

From Al Jazeera

Israel will use images of rescued captive ‘to justify the killing

’Palestinian Deputy Ambassador to the UN Majed Bamya has said that as people rejoice for the reunification of families in Israel, the world must not forget that more than 100 Palestinians have been killed.
“Scores of civilians and many children were killed today in the Israeli operation and they may not be mentioned or will be a footnote in today’s news at best,” he said in a post on X.
“As you smile seeing a father finally embracing his daughter in Tel Aviv, shed a tear for the father having to bury his daughter in Gaza,” he added.
He said that there is a way for Palestinian and Israeli families to be “reunited in life not in death”.
“That is the success we should all be striving for. After eight months of massacres, Israel will use today’s images to try and justify the killing of 36,000 Palestinians and the destruction of the lives of 2.3 million Palestinians. Don’t let it.”

What would you have suggested Israeli forces do to rescue these hostages?

what would you suggest Palestinians do to stop Israeli settlers stealing their land and the idf killing them, imprisoning them and treating them like dogs?

I mean if 1700 Israeli deaths makes it OK to kill 36000 Palestinians, then how many israelis is it OK for Palestinians to kill?

the correct answer is 0 by the way. its never OK to kill anyone

The point is that Hamas committed a massacre and took hostages. They kept hostages in civilian areas. They embedded themselves in civilian areas. They provoked a war with a nation whose military is capable of crushing them. They did so deliberately. They believe they can win the propaganda war and they don’t care how many lives are lost in the process.

Hamas (and Iran, and Putin, if you follow the strings far enough) signed the death warrants of tens of thousands of innocent people. We need to be better, we need to require our international allies to be better, than them.

My point is it has nothing to do with those killed so far in this terrible war - not just those killed today BUT should Israel just have accepted their country being invaded and their citizens killed and abducted? What do you think Israel should have done? Accepted it?

Oh so are you saying that you will understand if Palestinians kill 10s of 1000s of innocent Israelis in future? Their country has been invaded, innocents have been killed, starved, tortured, sexually assaulted and abducted. You obviously don't expect them to accept it that would be horrendous double standards.

To keep on topic the pictures I have seen from today are horrific, more pressure needs to be applied to get a permanent ceasefire and a two state solution done. This endless circle of pointless violence needs to end. The US should know better and be facilitating peace not massacres.

So that makes it ok that tens of thousands of innocent children and civilians have been killed? You need to go elsewhere with your excuses because the IDF and the Israeli government are responsible for their actions just as Hamas is for theirs

There is nothing heroic about killing over 100 innocent people to rescue the lives of four innocent people, whose freedom you could have secured by agreeing to a ceasefire.

This isn’t even about the lives of these people, it’s about power and politics.

@ConnieCounter I was attacked for not being sufficiently performative, lacking humanity and defending myself from personal attacks. I had to report some frankly abusive messages from behind the scenes. It's been painted as people having been mean and unable to be happy for the freed hostages, but actually there was a lot of abuse and bullying attempts stemming from the thread. As I've said elsewhere, I am glad for the innocent people who have been reunited with their loved ones. I am heartbroken for those whose loved ones have been torn from them in the process.

I saw that commenting positively about the physical condition of the hostages or the fact that 200 people died was not being tolerated by some on the thread. So I didn't engage. I'm sorry that you were subject to abuse and bullying.

Not killed, starved maimed thousands of innocent civilians and children. At this stage the "they started it" and "what are Israel meant to do" are pathetic childish responses.

I don't think anyone would expect people not to defend themselves when attacked, especially by such a horrific terrorist atrocity. Self-defence is one thing, but death on this scale goes far beyond what was necessary.
