In general I abhor Israels actions in Gaza BUT
If my child was a hostage there I wouldn't care if they flattened the whole camp to rescue them

They rescued their innocent citizens being held by terrorists

That’s so difficult @Scirocco You are not a coward and you aren’t required to sacrifice everything to fix this. You feel bad for not risking everything, while there are men in power who are happy for children to burn to death so that they can hold on to it and shield themselves from the consequences of their actions. Save your disparaging words for them. You seem to have had enough unkind words from others this last couple of days or so. I don’t know the content of the message you have received, but if it’s because they know you are personally impacted and see this as an opportunity to upset you, then shame on them.
This is a sort of little mantra I like to tell myself when I am feeling wobbly.. I will not be intimidated, I will not be silenced, I am in control of my reactions.

It may be a surprise to you but some of us view all lives as equal. A situation where 4 lives are saved but over 200 lost is not something to be celebrated, relief yes that people are going home but definitely not a celebration when so many aren't.

And don't equate innocent Palestinians with Hamas. Pretty sure the 14,000 children killed did not take or hold any hostages

Accept the deal Hamas put to them on 09/10? Accept the numerous ceasefires?

I have to say I was sickened to read that the humanitarian jetty that was built post 7/8 was used to bring in “humanitarian” vehicles (trojan horses) which were used to facilitate this.

No one is saying you can’t have a thread celebrating the return of hostages; we’re saying we are talking about the 200+ people slaughtered today, about 400+ injured presumably life changing with no access to proper healthcare.

Penning people into a tiny space and saying we are controlling your food, water and blocking free journalists from entering is not a war.

Be honest with yourself, Israel wants to kill every single Palestinian and take over every bit of land.

You can clearly see people are distressed at the fact that over two hundred people were massacred today, that their lives were worth so little but to people on this thread they were people. They had families, they were someone’s family, someone’s hopes and dreams.

Over 35000 people have been slaughtered while being told to move from pilar to post. This thread is in mourning go somewhere else.

Thank you. I'm not feeling very wise today, I let bullies and people with an agenda wind me up for their own amusement. There was only so much I could sit back and be philosophical about while the blood of innocents continues to be spilled. Hopefully they've got it out their systems now.

On the ground in Gaza, locals described scenes of carnage following the strikes that led up to the rescue.

Nidal Abdo, was shopping in Nuseirat on Saturday when he described a “crazy bombardment” hitting. “[It was] something we never witnessed before, maybe 150 rockets fell in less than 10 minutes, while we were running away more fell on the market,” he said.
“There are children torn apart and scattered in the streets, they wiped out Nuseirat, it is hell on earth,” he said.

I am so sorry for your despair, but please do not think that. This is all like vortex of revenge sucking innocent people into an abyss.

Your children need you and more orphans will not help. You will be able to do more, alive, in the future.

You have done so much on these threads too to succinctly explain what has been happening to Palestinians and how it is wrong, giving them a voice really, but without loosing sight and understanding of what Hamas did to Israelis. Like a wise guide.

I just saw Motaz Azaizas latest post on Instagram. I try to avoid photos/videos of what is happening these days and just read about it because if I'm honest I feel fucking haunted by some of the things I have seen but his photo popped up at the top of my feed. Those poor children. It's all so pointless when a ceasefire could have been agreed to, the hostages would have been home months ago and those little children would be tucked up at home with their parents. How can people applaud the 'rescue' and say well done when this is the result, people held hostage for longer than they should have been and children blown to pieces. Nothing about this conflict has been done well.

I think there is confusion and misuse about the term ‘whataboutery ‘.

Talking about the other side of the same coin is not ‘whataboutery’ as in deflecting away from one issue to an unrelated one of a separate time. It is talking about the same thing.

For example, on this thread - about this morning’s massacre of over 200 Palestinian people, the wounding of many more, and the possible killing of some hostages - someone could say, ‘Horror though this is, one good thing to come from it is the four rescued hostages and Noa and her dying mother meeting again’.

That would not be whataboutery, I don’t think, just as it was not whataboutery on the other thread, rejoicing in the rescued hostages, to point out the devastating corollary.
