The fact that someone thinks a reasonable defence of genocide is they haven't killed all Palestinians and sure wasn't there loads of them to begin with is frightening.

It is. This type of counter argument also shows a lack of understanding of what constitutes a genocide.

Just imagine I had written this post, regarding the Israeli/ Jewish people, I would have been accused of being antisemitic (and rightly so). My post would have been deleted too (again rightly so).
Your post is Islamophobic. It is unacceptable.

Talking about the climate cost of a war isn't about sides, it's about the planet.

War is a manmade environmental disaster as well as a humanitarian one, and there are consequences that will affect people around the world; even people who might never have even heard of Israel or Palestine.

The costs of making, shipping and then using weapons of such destructive force go far beyond money. We're all going to be the victims of climate change if we don't start taking it seriously and considering how our actions impact upon the world.

Sadly I don't think the human race is capable of this and those that are and trying to do something about it are ridiculed and dismissed. There doesn't seem to be any appetite for making changes if it effects people's pockets or lifestyles.

She doesn't have to take it anywhere else.

What genocide by the way. Gazas population has hugely increased over the last few years.

I'm fed of people defending this lot- they're losing a war they started.

They were offered a state 75 years ago, rejected it and lost the war they started.

How does it make them victims to lose wars they keep starting.

If they did get rid of Israel (they won't by the way) it will just be another Arab failed state a la Syria. There won't be a benevolent democracy in Israels place. Hamas is a brutal regime and you better hope they never succeed.

So much racism in one comment! This is far beyond 'losing another war they started' (where did I read that before, I wonder?). Israel chose to drop more bombs on Gaza in 9 months than on London, Dresden and Hamburg during the entirety of WW2. Neither Hamas, nor the civilians of Gaza made the IDF do that and we are all going to pay the price due to the environmental impact it's causing. And it has already been mentioned to you that genocide is not about population growth/decline, although I doubt that population of Gaza is growing right now. You're obviously another person who has mistaken Mumsnet for Twitter. You can take that elsewhere, too.

Genocide has absolutely nothing to do with how big the population is, it is regarding intent. (You are supposed to be a solicitor, surely you check facts before posting?!) The genocide - as recognized by law - of Bosniak Muslims in Srebenica constituted only around 0.5% of the population. I was reading the ICT report and interestingly the exact same narrative that we are hearing today regarding genocide in Gaza was exactly the same narrative that the Former Yugoslavs used to attempt to deny and shut down the investigation. Such as, but not limited to:

  • it was only a tiny percentage of the population
  • their birth rate was high prior
  • they were 'casualties of war'
  • they (Serbs) were retaliating for previous provocations and acted in 'the heat of passion'

Evidence to arrive at the genocide verdict included exhumed victims from mass graves having their hands tied and bullets to the back of the head. It immediately made me think of the scene at Shifa hospital. God willing justice will be done for the Palestinian people.

This lot? Who would that be? The dead babies? The children orphaned? Amputees? Those trapped under the rubble?

I'm sorry that it's really bothering you to see that rational people can see the Palestinians as victims. The world has woken up and can see Israel and it's policies for what it is. If that hurts you, you need to examine your own self and morals.

This isn't Twitter, take that crap elsewhere. It isn't tolerated here. And this is no laughing matter, Israel's actions would affect all of us. Also, I wonder what the Finding Out part of Israel's Fucking Around for the last 75 years by brutally oppressing the Palestinians and committing genocide against them would be?

ICJ orders Israel to pay "full reparations", restitution & compensation to all Palestinians for its all "wrongful acts" under the occupation since 1967.
I wonder if one day a court will say one day that Israel has to pay for full reparation of Gaza as well

It's tokenism, but at least it's a start.

@10UsernamesNotAvailableTryAnotherOne don't be surprised, I don't usually remember usernames but will never forget this one's posts, deleted within minutes thankfully but absolutely blood curdling.

Maybe Hamas should have thought of that before it massacred over a thousand people and took hostages including Holocaust survivors and a literal baby.

FAFO.

By your (twisted) logic Israel should have thought about it's horrendous treatment of the Palestinians for the last 75 years. How many literal babies have been killed by Israel in the last twenty years alone? A lot more than one.

Like Australia which is classed as Global North and is blue, as is Israel, on the map you posted.

Tbf, I was incorrect in referencing Palestine there - the status of the Occupied Territories isn't as clearcut as saying they should be classed the same as Israel.

Though, having said tat @Scirocco I think Israel counts as north because its so highly economically developed.

More pro-Hamas whining
Whose pro- Hamas?

Israel has no incentive to rebuild Gaza. It can stay in ruins, as a warning.
I doubt the rest of the international community would leave it ruins. Their incentive for rebuilding is humanity and the recognitions of Palestinian civilians basic human rights: the right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to work and education

How is it pro-Hamas to point out that war and widespread destruction of societies has a climate cost?

How is it pro-Hamas to think that innocent people deserve the same rights to things like water, food, shelter and healthcare as we would want for ourselves?

I would agree with that - it's a highly technologically and economically developed country.

If it is pro Hamas to think people deserve homes, schools, hospitals, infrastructure vital to life, what is called when you want children to be left to survive in rubble 'as a warning'?

SharonEllis · 16/07/2024 17:27

Scirocco · 16/07/2024 16:56

Israel and Palestine are both in the Northern hemisphere. The main suppliers and manufacturers of the weapons causing large scale destruction in Gaza are based in the West.

That's not how global north & south are defined (which goes to show how limited a concept it is). Australia is in the southern hemisphere but noone would consider it 'global south'. A lot of North Africa, ME & Asia are technically northen hemisphere but classed as 'global south'. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_North_and_Global_South
