The IDF have reportedly carried out airstrikes on displaced people, in an area Israel designated a 'humanitarian area'. They told people to go there, displaced people to that area, and have now reportedly bombed it.

Airstrikes on Rafah reportedly kill 30 after Hamas launches rockets at Tel Aviv

Medics in the southern Gaza city say the strikes hit an area of tents being used by displaced people.

@quantumbutterfly what are your thoughts on what happened?

Grandmasswagbag · 27/05/2024 19:41

The human shield argument has never held any weight. It's simply bollocks designed to make it seem acceptable to carpet bomb civilians on the chance there's some terrorists among them. The UK is also densely populated and there are terrorists among us. If you're happy with the human shield argument you'd have to be happy with large numbers of UK civilians being murdered in pursuit of the Manchester bomber. Think not.

What is your definition of zionism?

The excuse that’s being used to try to justify what the IDF are currently doing.

Agreed, Zionism is just as dangerous as any other extremism religion.

AhNowTed · 27/05/2024 19:29

So sick of this “human shield” claptrap.

If Hamas’s strategy was to use human shields, can anyone point to a single case where that was a successful deterrent. In 9 months.

No. Israel just bomb them all anyway.

Let’s call it for what it is. Hamas may be hiding amongst civilians, and that suits Israel very well indeed.

They can bomb starving children in tents with a clear conscience.

And then blame the Palestinians.

Grandmasswagbag · 27/05/2024 19:16

Just when you think this can't get sicker. I'm honestly gobsmacked, outraged. I'm sure someone will be along in a minute to say if Hamas would only release the hostages it would all stop. We are a disgrace as a nation and we've lost all credibility on the world stage if we continue to support this bloodthirsty killing of innocents.

As far as I know he wasn't televised so not possible to see if he was smirking during his mea culpa - maybe learnt something from the WFC deaths 'apology'

And the invisible US red lines

US urges Israel to 'take every precaution' to protect civilians after 'devastating' Rafah strike

The US urges Israel to take every precaution to protect civilians in Gaza after “devastating images” from the Israeli airstrike on a camp for displaced Palestinians, the White House has said.

Reuters cited a US national security council spokesperson as saying:
''Israel has a right to go after Hamas, and we understand this strike killed two senior Hamas terrorists who are responsible for attacks against Israeli civilians. But as we’ve been clear, Israel must take every precaution possible to protect civilians''

The spokesperson added that the US is “actively engaging” the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and partners on the ground “to assess what happened” in Rafah

Netanyahu says deadly Rafah airstrike a 'tragic mishap'

Benjamin Netanyahu has described the deadly Israeli airstrike on a camp for displaced Palestinians in the southern Gaza city of Rafah as a “tragic mishap”.

“We are investigating the case, that is our policy,” Netanyahu said in a speech at the Knesset on Monday, Haaretz reported.

The Israeli leader added that “for us, every uninvolved [being hurt] is a tragedy,” it added. He claimed the incident occurred “despite our best efforts not to hurt them”.

The problem with this is that they were told repeatedly that it wasn't safe for them to attack Rafah. Repeatedly told that it was too dangerous for all the innocent people they had chosen to herd there. Told by the ICJ to stop. It isn't a mishap if everybody tells you something will happen, you ignore them and then that something happens. What happened was entirely predictable, Israel just clearly didn't care because they know they can say they have 'investigated' it and what do you know, they are in the clear and the whole world will nod sagely.

Netanyahu needs a tragic mishap of his own.

Hamas accepted a ceasefire that Israel rejected.

@Jessie21 that's just not true though is it? They rewrote an already generous proposal by Israel and agreed to trade in dead bodies. They then sent Back this proposal as an acceptance.

You seem intent in trading in mistruths on here.

Why do you deny that Israel rejected the last ceasefire?

Yes. This happens every time there's a high profile atrocity committed by Israel. They'll be back in a few days.

Their silence is always quite deafening. However, they will be back.

Though one clearly couldn't help themselves.

It is staggering to me that in the face of waking up to videos of babies burnt to death - one even headless, someone can so casually pop on to say 'blame Hamas...'

I truly hope I don't know anyone like this in real life.

Oh come on. Are you really trying to argue that Israel wants a ceasefire? What nonsense.

This is almost definitely just lip service, but an interesting take nonetheless. The tweeter is an Irish political correspondent.

Exactly this.

Hamas started and continue this. Place your blame at their feet.

No, this was Israels choice to do this, they alone are responsible for this, nobody else, just Israel

Scirocco · 27/05/2024 15:50

@quantumbutterfly thank you for your kind words. I desperately want peace, for everyone. Palestine is very dear to my heart; it is devastating to see what is being done to it. I have friends and colleagues there, people I deeply respect and care about. Some of their families are still there too. And innocent families like EllaDisenchanted's are living through this nightmare too. Because (mostly) men with too much greed and hate can't set their egos and anger aside and talk instead.

What has happened is horrific. Saying that I think it can be expressed without comparing it to the holocaust and for many reasons it should not be compared to the holocaust.

Edited

Why?

It's a genocide.

Plain and simple. They have made that clear. They have no intention of fighting Hamas. They have no intention of protecting the civilians - Hamas accepted a ceasefire that Israel rejected.

Israel will not stop until Gaza has been levelled and Palestine does not exist anymore. They will not stop.

Cecilly · 27/05/2024 15:21

@Neverpostagain I guess the only way to defend the horrific actions of Israel is "Hamas made us do it". How lame.

Any state who thinks that it is acceptable to deliberately herd people into a "safe zone" then proceeds to bomb them, which in turns set the place on fire is beyond contempt. To defend this is beyond contempt too.
I have worked on a ward for burn victims. I lasted 2 months.
In the words of a doctor who managed to leave Gaza," the dead are the lucky ones".
Go and spend time in Gaza and then come back and tell me you still support this . I really doubt you would.
