The IDF have reportedly carried out airstrikes on displaced people, in an area Israel designated a 'humanitarian area'. They told people to go there, displaced people to that area, and have now reportedly bombed it.

Airstrikes on Rafah reportedly kill 30 after Hamas launches rockets at Tel Aviv

Medics in the southern Gaza city say the strikes hit an area of tents being used by displaced people.

The daily death toll in Gaza is higher than any other 21st century armed conflict. I'm not sure how that equates to far less civilians being killed than any other conflict? And clearly there's no sign of the conflict stopping any time soon. God knows what the eventual toll could be.

@BorgQueen
Your post is over 90% false propaganda, well done.

In all honesty, just what do people expect?
It’s a WAR, heartbreakingly awful things happen.
What is the alternative? Should Israel just let hundreds of rockets be fired at them daily?

Hamas have deliberately put themselves in the midst of the civilian population, their mission is to obliterate Israel, they are a medieval death cult, there is no ‘peace agreement’ to be had with them and they will not stop until they are destroyed.
The death toll for civilians is far less, percentage wise, than pretty much any other confilct, it could have been far lower if neighbouring countries would have accepted refugees.
Israel are sending enormous amounts of aid in, far more than anyone else.
There is plenty of impartial, fact checked info out there.

It’s hard to cut through the propaganda, on both sides, it’s also infuriating to see people swallowing any old bullshit put out by the pro Palestine side, even when it’s demonstrably false / staged, whilst at the same time refusing to believe anything to the contrary.

BINGO!

We've not had the super-crass patronising 'It's a war. What do you expect' for a while

Can't say I've missed it

I have been completely horrified by some people I know in person revealing that they think what Israel is doing is acceptable.

Yeah my brother did on WhatsApp last month. It caused a pretty passionate exchange between all of we siblings. He started out by saying it’s not genocide and the term genocide is so overused and that what was going on was at most an incompetent military causing a lot of civilian deaths and to be expected when most of an army are poorly trained conscripts.

I said I was going by the internationally accepted legal definition of genocide in the Geneva Convention. He then said genocide is killing an entire population…so I sent him the definition.

We ended up agreeing to disagree.

I agree. I think its very basic humanity to feel outrage and pain at the unendurable suffering going on in Gaza right now. It takes nothing away from what Israel suffered on oct 7th, that was vile and inhuman too. To not see both in the same light really takes years of indoctrination, that serves to wipe out what basic humanity a person was born with.
I pity anyone who is like that. It also scares me as these people present as normal.

PeasfullPerson · 28/05/2024 08:50

Thanks for that information @Efacsen It’s sad this extra layering of suffering doesn’t get much attention, I expect it will become more apparent when the dust settles. It’s not as if when the bombs stop falling everything will return to normal.

Efacsen · 28/05/2024 08:43

There's in the order of 300000 adults and children in Gaza with chronic health conditions - including cancer, heart conditions, hypertension, asthma, PTSD who are currently receiving little or no healthcare

And 20000 adults and children in need of medical evacuation out of Gaza because of the severity of their injuries or acute/health conditions

It's a little reported tragedy

From the BBC:

The US called the images "heartbreaking" but insisted Israel had a right to defend itself.

"Israel has a right to go after Hamas, and we understand this strike killed two senior Hamas terrorists who are responsible for attacks against Israeli civilians," a White House national security spokesperson said.

For America to express the event in these terms, as though the mistake of the attack was not entirely out of proportion in relation to the gains -

given that 50 sheltering Palestinians were killed, including children, and at least 180 more are being treated for horrible wounds by one agency alone -

is not in the spirit of the law and makes the USA seem weak, it is so nonsensical as well as immoral.

Just at least say Israel made a catastrophic decision in carrying out that attack, and they had told them not to go there.

It just shows how little respect the Israeli and US government has for Palestinian lives.

Israel won’t risk any of its own soldiers, it would rather burn children alive than do this, and it’s OK to them because it’s the wrong sort of children.

And if these senior members of Hamas were really there, then yes go back to your bloody tunnels.

Cowards, all of them.

@Auvergne63 when I see those children suffering, it takes me back to a long period of time when one of my children was very unwell, and the distress I felt at not being able to make it better. Not being able to help my child was for me a pain that I felt throughout my entire body, it was if the whole world was wrong. I was lucky, my child is OK, we had health care and a safe home with plenty of food to eat. In these ideal circumstances, and without the added anger of this being caused by another human being, it took us both years to recover, me mentally, and my child physically and mentally. If these people survive, I wonder how they will begin to recover.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I am glad you have both recovered. I also do not know how these people are going to heal.

Thank you @ScrollingLeaves

My daughter has eczema complications, resulting in herpes and streptococcus infections covering her entire body, which lead to kidney failure.

She would not survive in Gaza.

Imagine all the other treatable conditions that would not survive now.

And this is without the bombs.

It’s a scary thought isn’t it. I have similar, and it makes me incredibly sad and angry. I don’t know how people can be completely switched off to the suffering, we all have blind spots and will focus on issues we relate to and have more knowledge of. I don’t think any of us will ever grasp another persons pain in its entirety, but it makes me lose faith in humanity when people can’t even entertain in their mind the unbearable and unjust suffering that these parents and children are trying to endure.
I’m sorry to hear about your daughter. I hope she stays well and that we remain in a situation where help and medication is readily available.

Ok, I’m not getting that quote from the Z Irish times . It’s this

The White House described the incident as ‘heartbreaking.’ “Israel has a right to go after Hamas, but as we’ve been clear, Israel must take every precaution possible to protect civilians. We are actively engaging the [Israel Defense Forces] and partners on the ground to assess what happened,” said a spokesman for the National Security Council spokesperson.

IbisDancer · 28/05/2024 08:14

Javed Ali, the director of emergency response in Gaza for International Medical Corps, described the horrific scenes as the dying and wounded were brought for treatment following the Israeli attack on a tent camp for civilians sheltering in Rafah that killed 45 people.
“With this loud air strike that we heard, we just rushed to the hospital and in about five minutes or so after arrival we started seeing ambulances coming in. I think in total we had about 75 patients. Out of those 75, 25 were really critical,” Ali said in a video interview.
“I saw the dead body of a father who was basically holding his child perhaps around three years of age. They were burned and charred. We couldn’t separate them. So we had to put both of them together in a body bag,” he said.
“That was very, very hard.”

IHL expects civilian casualties, it does not demand that you eliminate them all together. It does demand you mitigate them to the best of your ability.

No doubt they will be exonerated under the law. Who can ever prove someone was not doing something to the best of their ability.

Their killing ratio is 2 Hamas: 45 civilians including children, and more wounded though. If it was not intentional, it was bungled.

They are dragging Israel down in the eyes of the world seemingly like puppets in Hamas’s hands.

therealcookiemonster · 28/05/2024 01:05

Alwayslookonthe · 27/05/2024 14:32

I understand the raw emotion about this strike. It is horrific.

There’s much we don’t know. What we do know is important, though.

Senior Hamas combatants were the targets and were killed in the strike. Meaning the target was likely legitimate.

The question was the proportionality analysis done. That’s not something we know.

IHL expects civilian casualties, it does not demand that you eliminate them all together. It does demand you mitigate them to the best of your ability.

And that’s the question that must be answered.

so if a serial killer hid in your house with your whole family and kids - you would be fine for the police to lock the doors set fire to the house to kill the serial killer because he is a legitimate target?

roarrfeckingroar · 27/05/2024 13:47

@Jessie21 Palestinians have been bombing Israel for decades.

err... I think you will find that the first terrorist attacks carried out in "israel" was pre 1948 by extremist zionist terrorists for example the Irgun which was an offshoot of one of the paramilitary groups that formed the IDF post 1948. both arab and british targets were bombed. examples include the bombing of the King David Hotel which resulted in the death of the then British ambassador.

these terrorist/paramilitary groups also murdered countless locall Jews who did not agree with mass immigration into the region.

Me too.

My daughter has a chronic illness, and has regular outbreaks of potentially fatal skin infections.

I often used to think about what would happen in the case of war, or shortages, or some other catastrophe.

Without medication she would have died.

Apart from the appalling injuries that the children of Gaza have suffered, imagine the children in Gaza with treatable conditions like asthma, eczema, cancer, leukaemia, and all manner of other conditions and disabilities.

Their parents must be absolutely distraught.

I am sorry for what you both and your children have been through. 💐

Justified?
I don't justify my thoughts to you. What I think, I will share with people who might make a difference, you are intractable and whatever compassion I feel is wasted on you.

So much rudeness. Do you treat everyone in RL when they try to have a conversation with you? You've shown zero ounces of compassion to what's happened. Tells us everything we need to know.

Aljazeera reporting more Israeli bombing of residential areas in Rafah. There's no respite.

IDF airstrikes reportedly carried out on 'humanitarian area'
