Think it's unlikely too - but the families are beyond desperate and therefore willing to try absolutely anything particularly as the prospect of a negotiated release is looking so grim

But don't think the timing is anything to do with Netanyahu PR - it rather works against him inciting more anti-Netanyahu/anti-war demonstrations in Israel

And yes the girls were soldiers. But they have conscription in Israel for 2 years straight after school. So they might be 'soldiers' but they were girls aged 18-19 like any other girl aged 18-19.

Like other posters have said- I am Jewish and many of my friends know that I am Jewish although it has never been something I am very open about. I have not heard from a single friend who knows I am Jewish ANYTHING about October 7 and the aftermath. Not a single person reached out to say anything at all. Not even an 'are you feeling okay?'. Even with all the rampant anti semitism that has been displayed since then. Not a sausage.

I lived in Ukraine for a while and have many Ukrainian and Russian friends. After Putin invaded I reached out to both sides saying I was thinking of them and hoped for peace. I asked my DCs to keep an eye on a little Russian girl in their class in case some of the kids decided to target her. That seems not to have happened thank Goodness. Because like a functioning normal person I can see that individuals should not be blamed for the horrors that others perpetrate. Yet since October 7 I see people targeting Jewish people- for the acts of a Government of a completely different country that they have no control over or often even a relationship with.

My older DS has learning difficulties and he is terrified that someone will find out we are Jewish. He asked me if we could 'Get the Jewish bits' out of our blood so we can 'hide better and be safe'.

Only read first post and haven't (won't) watch the video as I fear it'll be too horrific. To ask, it's a video of female hostages, and their captors are saying they plan to rape them and make them pregnant? Have I got that right? How exactly is that 'resistance against occupation'?

There was a campaign a while back to publicise the picture and back story of political prisoners, facing the death penalty in Iran. You picked one person and shared their name/story on social media with the idea that this would put pressure on the Iranian government not to kill this particular person because the world was watching. It probably didn't work but was better than nothing. Is there any kind of campaign like that for the hostages? I've seen lots of lists online of all the names and pictures but don't know who these individual women in this video are.

I continue to be horrified that some people can only have empathy for innocent victims on one side of the conflict. These girls/ teenagers have been enduring a living nightmare for months .

Yes. Somebody said upthread they thought the women were pregnant or butchered by Hamas - I think unfortunately there is quite a high chance they've died as a result of the Gaza war. I really hope not because they have been let down at every turn. Not listened to when they warned of the attack. Left vulnerable on the border and now still in captivity.

I think most people would be enormously sympathetic and saddened by the horrific plight of these hostages and the fact that your first response is to consider the video a PR stunt rather than feel sympathy reflects very poorly on you.

Like I said to another poster if that's the case, it's now released after a lot of deaths caused by Israel...I can't see them getting the support they need....it's not like Netanyahu ever planned for their safe release...if so he would habe handled everything differently.

If that is the case it's a real shame because I don't think the video will have the sympathetic reaction they need....due to the Israeli governments bloodthirsty war...the families know that absolutely no regard has been given to the hostages safety...

It's my understanding that the video was released by the Hostages Families at this time because they want a negotiated release not a military rescue and IDF is right now expanding their invasion of Rafah [the military option] with an added large portion of embaressing Netanyahu with whom they have poor relations over many months

The video was released ahead of a war cabinet meeting on Wednesday night and was declaredly aimed at pressuring ministers to step up efforts to reach a deal with Hamas to release the hostages. Negotiations on a truce deal have been stalled since April. The only previous deal, in November, saw 105 hostages released during a weeklong truce.
“The disturbing video has been the reality of Agam, Daniella, Liri, Naama, Karina, and 123 other hostages for 229 days,” the Hostages and Missing Families Forum said in a statement. “The video is a damning testament to the nation’s failure to bring home the hostages, who have been forsaken for 229 days.”
“The Israeli government must not waste even one more moment – it must return to the negotiating table today!” it added.

I do believe it was the girls’ families releasing the video in absolute desperation that their government had stopped negotiating with Hamas for their release. They wanted to put pressure on the government.

Yes, it is just awful. Pray that there will be a deal to release them and that somehow they can heal, though how I cannot imagine.

Before their vicious slaughter or capture, over months while at their posts, their warnings of an impending attack were ignored, and then they were left completely vulnerable on Oct 7. Some did not even have weapons I think I remember. ( There were various articles about these ‘spotter’ soldiers in the Israeli press.)

I'm cynical as to why this video is coming out now (Israel has a long track record of PR stunts)...unfortunately this war was never about their safety or having them rerurned and that is the sad part. I don't see how releasing this video at this stage (after so much death and destruction) is going to help their situation....as if to say "ohhhh but it's all about the hostages...it always was"...if so Israel should have gone to great lengths to secure their release...they chose to go on the rampage instead. Yes... negotiating with Hamas is a difficult thing after what they did but do they want the hostages back or not?

"The Left" have no relevance to this. "The Right" in the form of Netanyahu, Smotrich and Ben Gvir do. So it makes me annoyed when posters throw shade on "the left" and imply they are culpable. It's culture wars and these girls deserve better.

@ScrollingLeaves Absolutely awful. I think women who serve face a much higher risk of sexual violence than men, if taken prisoner. I pray their families can get them out and they heal. I am afraid the hostages more likely to be released were classed as civilian, and Hamas may hang on to soldiers longer, but that hopefully can be changed.
