New Hamas video of hostages

The new Hamas video released today of the female hostages selected as the ones they planned to get pregnant was so sickening and I wish I hadn’t seen it.

however, I am also wondering WHY it has not been more widely picked up and broadcast? I don’t understand the silence from the bleeding left; why don’t they see stuff like this and not just feel desperate and sick about those poor poor girls and their families who must be beyond devastated.

Watching the men in those videos helps to counter balance the idea of Israel as the aggressor. I wish more would see it and reflect or even just place those women of equal value to those in Gaza.

How is the world so perverse right now that this warrants a shrug from so many? Or worse, is viewed as justified !?

It's horrific. It should be condemned.

We've seen and watched months worth of horrific footage coming from Gaza and this video sits somewhere in the midst of this avalanche of deliberately inflicted misery and suffering. People's reactions don't occur in a vacumn. People that have seen this video have also likely seem the bodies of dismembered children, those who have starved, their mothers crying over their bloodied corpses. Poor little Hind. Those abandoned premature babies. The men found bound and shot. A huge amount of broken bodies and every kind of pain.

In the same way that the first assault on a hospital was considered horrific worldwide, but by the time of the 10th, there's more of an exhausted tragic ache, rather than the original rage. The first time we saw Israeli soldiers strip, bind and beat men, including kids and elderly, I was horrified. Now I'm just saddened.

What we have seen (on both sides) is so horrific that it takes a lot to shock. So whilst what these poor women are going through is hell and it should be condemned, I have a more visceral reaction to the ten thousand plus innocent children who have died. To those who are suffocating to death alone and in pain right now trapped beneath the rubble.

There is enough death for each if us to be horrified by different people's suffering. Its not a competition.

That translation of the words as 'the girls that can get pregnant' is highly contentious. Best to check for accuracy before assumptions- not to defend any of the rest of it.

This what you took from the video?

What's your interpretation of it?

I'm not the poster(s) who started using such a thread to disparage "the left" unnecessarily. Take it up with them. As I said, I find making it about left/right wholly inappropriate.

Are there any other instances of wholly inappropriate behaviour-perhaps exhibited by the terrorists in this video of the hostages-that you feel motivated to comment upon?

I had the misfortune of unexpectedly seeing some of the footage from an IDF base posted up by Hamas on October 7th and the level of carnage and desecration was inhuman.

Thanks for drawing our attention to this as I had not seen it. Very thoughtful, interesting & insightful.

Yes, I think it should be compulsory reading for anyone who thinks Israel has the upper hand. The Brits have a weakness for "the underdog" that may be based on some very distorted perceptions.

I'd just like to add that when 7 October first hit the news, I just dismissed it from my head and had an automatic reaction that favoured Palestine, which I vaguely understood to have been oppressed for decades. I'm deeply ashamed now of that oversimplification.

I find it so harrowing and barbaric

Just unconscionable

Anyone who is interested enough in the situation to post on this thread should read this one too.

In the video one of the terrorists leans forward and touches his forehead to the ground. Is he actually praying amidst all the tormenting of these young girls? Unbelievable.
How anyone could view the plight of these poor girls and not feel sick for them I'll never know. Every woman must surely feel for them.
Videos like these expose the fundamental nature of Hamas men and what the Israelis are up against.

Choosing to come onto a thread about bloodied, beaten and abused women and their desperate families to complain about how it's not fair that some of the more terrorist sympathising elements of the left wing are being unfairly disparaged and how the timing of the video's release doesn't quite suit. Give over.

God, its unbearable. I know someone who works in counter terrorism and within a few days of the massacre they had a briefing in which they were told things that he could not share. He said it was worse than anything that was reported.

It is unbearable

On the one side we have far right terrorists and on the other side we have the left defending them. It's extremely odd.

It's extremely disturbing. Even more disturbing that it's not even surprising any more.

AdamRyan · 23/05/2024 19:36

From where I'm standing the far right element is Netanyahu and he's being ably supported by the right wing.

Left wing or central people mainly don't comment as they will get called antisemitic at the drop of a hat.

I find it disgusting it's being used to play right/left culture wars. But that's the right wing for you.

Just wanted to add the reason we hear Nama Levi on the video say she has friends in Gaza, is that she did, she was a peace activist. This is in the BBC report.

I'm not sure if you read the AMA by an Israeli woman, but she described some of these peace initiatives and how betrayed families felt when they realised the Gazan(s) they considered friends turned out to be Hamas spies who were checking out the kibbutz to help plan the attack (layout, who would be at home at various times, etc).

It's astonishing that this Hamas film has not been featured much in the media. Just tells me all I need to know about how slanted this whole Middle East coverage is these days.

I think actual videos with hostages have been avoided by the main television new outlets on the whole as being disrespectful, though in this case the families have said they want it to be seen.

Has this fairly detailed BBC report been posted? It does not show the video but a still, and a photograph of Nama Levi, one of the hostages on the video, who was also shown months ago just after being captured, being pulled by her hair, with blood on her trousers and being pushed into a puck up truck. Her brother speaks of her in this BBC report.

And this too is what I think we've all been trying to say so far.

There's clearly a blind spot.

Since everyone acknowledges the evils of Hamas, it seems the blind spot is when looking the other way... and, as suggested earlier, I think it has to do with innate prejudices about what fascism looks like (literally).

It sounded like he said "sabaya" - is that what you heard?

It seems pretty clear to me from the footage, though, what those 'men' wanted and what they took.

Oh Gilad Shalit? The IDF soldier who was released alive after negotations?

I'm sure you're right...it's much better to kill, bomb and commit war crimes instead of trying to protect their citizens.

And make no mistake the IDF can be just as twisted and sadistic as Hamas...

The thread was hardly 'bombarded' with the term PR stunt, it was said once.....calm down

What the fuck kind of response is this? He was kept hostage for years. And he was exchanged for 1027 prisoners including terrorists and murderers, one of the released being Sinwar who is currently hiding away with the hostages in Gaza. But you know this, because you've already been told this. You just don't give a flying fuck.

What about the two soldiers kidnapped by terrorists in Lebanon? Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev. Two years of negotiations and they let the terrorist and murderer Samir Kuntar and others go in exchange for them. Except, of course, the Israeli soldiers were dead. No one knew that until they were returned though.

That's how negotiating with terrorists go - fucking badly.

I can honestly say as someone on the left, with a wide circle of left friends & family & having also mixed in very right wing circles the left does have a particularly didactic character to its groupthink. This is not an earthshatteringly original thought. I'm just surprised anyone is pushing back on it. The whole debate around antisemitism brought this into sharp focus because left wing people are 'antiracist' & live out their 'morality' in a particular way so therefore could not conceive of their own racism & thought racists were by definition right wing people. 'All humans do groupthink' is just another 'all lives matter'. You need to be able to understand and critically evaluate the differences or you cant solve the problems.

Thank you, this is what I was trying to say.

The definition of Zionism is pretty simple: it was a movement for (originally) the re-establishment and (now) the development and protection of a Jewish nation in what is now Israel. It was established as a political organization in 1897 under Theodor Herzl.

I am Jewish (although I do not practice the religion) and a Zionist. DDs are the same except that one is not a Zionist and the other is.

The reason I am a Zionist is because I believe that Jews need their homeland in which they can be free from anti semitism. This is how Herzl began his campaign for a Jewish homeland during the pogroms that took place in Eastern Europe in the late 19th century.

My belief stems mainly from the fact that my mother's family lived in Germany during the first half of the 20th century. My uncle escaped from Dachau (as far as I'm aware, the first German concentration camp where Jews and Communists were imprisoned) in 1936 and went to South America. My mother arrived here aged 19 while my grandmother, we later discovered died ina concentration camp alongside most of her extended family.

Therefore the only place Jews can be safe (the irony doesn't escape me!) is in Israel. The rampant antisemitism that has taken over many countries in which Jews have previously assimilated well and felt safe is today's driver in the belief that is Zionism. Universities, schools and workplaces are no longer welcoming to Jewish people who are afraid to acknowledge their Jewishness. This is how Nazism grew in Germany 100 years ago and partly why the Jewish State was founded in 1948.

There will be plenty on MN who will read this and say 'whatabout ...' but if you want to know why a Jewish homeland is imperative to most Jewish people (religious or otherwise) this is my pennyworth FWIW.

Thank you, it is very helpful to have an explanation like yours of what Zionism means, and everything you say is understandable in terms of Jewish people needing a safe homeland after WW11.
