It appears Jews are not safe in the UK at all.

Can we seriously look at the impact of anti semitism now?

Three in court over alleged plan to attack Jewish community

Three men are accused of planning a gun attack on the Jewish community in North-West England.

Ah yes and the Muslims should also be denouncing Hamas and Isis and al-qaeda because it affects them too so they should all be out denouncing them, on marches preferably….

But no we don’t and shouldn’t expect that because British Muslim people are not responsible for the actions of other muslims in other countries.

Key word is GENOCIDE…but if you don’t get it by now you never will …

mids2019 · 14/05/2024 18:55

There is hate crime and there is the attempt at mass murder. This was both.

I know people that stopped taking their kids to concerts after the Manchester arena bombing and I hate to think psychologically what this has done to the relatively small Jewish community in that area.

we know from previous terrorist attacks often in the perverse manifestos of the terrorists there was mention of the middle East so it makes sense at this time there is heightened worry.

@TabithaTimeTurner
It’s disgusting and the mindless sheep waving their flags every weekend about things they don’t understand are really not helping.

@Auvergne63 You may not agree to the marches happening and you have every right to do so but your derogatory sweeping statement on the marchers is not a valid argument to explain why antisemitism is rising.
By the way, any form of racism is despicable and I sincerely hope these vile individuals are dealt with accordingly.

I agree with @Auvergne63 there is absolutely no need for the insulting name calling of the protestors. You could have simply said "marchers" and made your point. There are plenty of posters on here who have been to the protests on here and most of them are Muslims.

mids2019 · 14/05/2024 18:47

At the end of the day this was a planned attack on the Jewish community in the North West that involved allegedly automatic weapons. Thank God the attack was foiled.

As Jews are a small community a threat of this magnitude should ring alarm bells. I suppose it is a magnitude greater to casual anti semitism in that is a magnitude greater. It is also the UK, my home country, and therefore particularly alarming.

I hope this planning isn't repeated.

There are many many more Muslims than Jews in this country and so surely the statistics show that Jews are being disproportionately targeted?

Given how few Jews there are, and given how even fewer look visibly Jewish, it feels to me that being publicly Jewish now is not safe at all. Muslims suffer more hate crimes but I still feel that numbers wise id be safer walking down the street looking identifiably Muslim than Jewish.

I don't really like having to make such direct comparisons as I don't think it needs to be a competition. Hate crime IS awful, whoever it is aimed at. But why does a thread about a terror attack planned against Jews result so quickly in posts about how it's worse for Muslims? It feels a bit "all lives matter".

If I came onto a thread about hate crime against Muslims and started talking about how often Jews are affected by hate crime I feel like I'd be chased out and rightfully so.

What else do you think Jewish people should do in order to not be the victim of an anti semetic attack?

Do you have any tips for Muslims as to how they could avoid being the victim of an islamophobic attack?

How about racism against black people? How should they modify their behaviour in order to avoid it.

We're all waiting with baited breath

Do you think that about just Jewish people or do you think other religions/, ethnicities should call out things that people of their religion/ethnicity do in other countries?

I don’t think they said “should” but the reality is that whenever there are extremists, moderate members of that group end up having to distance themselves because otherwise our society tars the whole group with the same brush. It’s a defensive survival tactic in a hostile society.

Look how many Muslims protesting for peace were tarred with the brush of supporting terrorism and Hamas, as being on the side of baby killers and rapists.

Similar is happening to Jews protesting antisemtism being tarred with the brush of supporting possible genocide, as being on the side of war criminals and violent settlers.

TBH, as someone who has sat in synagogue wondering what I'd do if I heard gunshots or an explosion and how we'd get the kids out etc, I don't actually think this means Jews 'aren't safe in the UK' and I believe that extremist Muslim Jew hatred is actually a fairly separate issue from antisemitism.

I'm not surprised by this and I'm 100 per cent sure right now there's a handful of other people in the UK (and other countries outside the Middle East) planning similar. But this is a national security issue and a Muslim extremism issue (and they do not represent the vast majority of Muslims at all), not a 'British antisemitism' issue. The government, police and security forces are completely against this, hence they busted these guys, thank God. The UK ultimately remains, even though things have deteriorated, one of the safest countries for Jews in the world, and probably one of the communities better protected by the authorities from this kind of aggression.

I agree with you completely. I don't excuse antisemitism (in the past and that still exists) but this type of extremism is a threat to all of us including Muslims (they are the victims of it the most).

I don't know how we are going to deal with it.

Why do you think Jewish people in particular should call them out?

@Auvergne63

May be next time you march one of those flags should be anti Hamas. May be if we had many more of those.....

Agreed. Some are of course well meaning but a significant number are not.

The Jewish community in the UK is relatively small and many of us, me included, are not visibly Jewish and go about our day to day lives without strangers knowing that we are. I dread to think what the statistics would be if we were a bigger and more visible community.

Cherryon · 14/05/2024 17:40

It appears Jews are not safe in the UK at all.

Jews never were as safe in the U.K. as Christians, as SharonEllis pointed out,
The hate crime statistics for decades show that.

The that before the Gaza protests, Jewish people were safe and there was hardly any antisemitism in the U.K. is erasing the grim hostility that Jewish communities have faced for years.

SharonEllis · 14/05/2024 17:20

@Auvergne63 interesting that that's your takeaway on a thread about a plot to kill Jews i the UK, If it was just the language used rather than the substantive point - which is that there are people propping up antisemites in these demos, theb I think calling them 'mindless' is quite restrained.

You can imply whatever you want from my post. I just think that you shouldn't tarnish every marcher with the same brush, unless you also believe we are the mindless sheep waving our flags every weekend about things we don’t understand".
Are they antisemitic elements in the protests, yes. Are they all antisemites, no.
Imagine if I describe every pro Israeli government protester the same way.
I am sure you would object too.

Comedycook · 14/05/2024 17:35

Maybe we could play bingo...

I'm just waiting to hear someone say that

-You can't criticise Israel without being called anti semetic

-There's lots of Jewish people on the march who are warmly welcomed

Anything else....

Cherryon · 14/05/2024 17:34

A single data point doesn’t make a trend.

I am looking forward to the Apr 23-Mar 24 Hate Crime statistics report to illuminate the impact of the Gazan war on both antisemitism and antimuslim hate crimes. The report will be released on 10 October 2024. It’s obvious there will be an increase, not so clear if it will be a record breaking increase or if the increase can be attributed to the protests.

2021-22
“In year ending March 2022, where the perceived religion of the victim was recorded, two in five (42%) of religious hate crime offences were targeted against Muslims (3,459 offences). The next most commonly targeted group were Jewish people, who were targeted in just under one in four (23%) of religious hate crimes (1,919 offences).”

”Religious hate crimes increased by 37 per cent between year ending March 2021 and year ending March 2022 (from 6,383 to 8,730). This increase follows two years where the number of these offences had fallen.”

2022-23
”In the year ending March 2023, where the perceived religion of the victim was recorded, over 4 in 10 (44%) of religious hate crime offences were targeted against Muslims (3,400 offences). The next most commonly targeted group were Jewish people, who were targeted in around 1 in 5 (19%) of religious hate crimes (1,510 offences).”

”Religious hate crimes decreased by 4% between the year ending March 2022 and the year ending March 2023 (from 8,602 to 8,241).”
