Conflict in the Middle East

Why aren’t the people protesting against Israel calling for Hamas to disarm and disband?

Surely that will force Israel to immediately stop the war?

They will not be able to continue if their aim of dismantling Hamas is achieved and the hostages are returned.

This is surely the best outcome for the Palestinian people?

I completely agree OP. As someone with 'no skin in the game' so to speak, I just can't fathom why people on the 'peace protests' aren't rallying against Hamas too.

Crabble · 10/05/2024 20:55

Because they are a terrorist organisation. The Israeli government is a democratically elected and accountable entity who is being supported by our government. 20 years ago I marched against the war in Iraq but I didn’t march against Al-Qaeda because there is no point protesting against terrorists because they don’t give a fuck.

Plus you’re very naive if you think anything will make Netanyahu stop.

See, this is what confuses me.
Israel is democratically elected, ok, but does that give them carte blanche to kill and massacre civilians in the name of democracy? And does that mean that we have no other criteria by which to judge them besides that they are a democracy?

Hamas are also democratically elected. Why isn’t that same carte blanche also extended to them?

Who decided and based on what grounds that Hamas are terrorists for fighting to gain back their homeland and resist occupation but Israel are not terrorists for occupying and illegally invading and disregarding international law?

I am so sick of this patronising, sneering, disingenuous way about talking about protestors. I'm a member of a parents group, we all have jobs and kids and extremely busy lives but we prioritise action over this issue. We have doctors, lawyers, teachers, self employed people, Christian's, atheists, Jewish people, people who are British born and not.

I've never been involved with a group before that has such a broad spectrum of people as members.

The knots people tie themselves in to faux headscratch about why people might be moved to act on this issue if utterly mind blowing.

It’s quite difficult if you have the sort of job and family responsibilities I have, which goes back to the point I was originally making about the sort of people who engage in this activity and the majority who don’t.
in any event I am not unhappy with the policy of my government on this question so let the fools make an exhibition of themselves is my view

Well, if you're not unhappy, presumably you aren't keen for there to be more events like the ones the OP wants to see, so the suggestion to take action in relation to it wouldn't be applicable to you at this point on this issue.

Once something comes along that you care strongly enough about, you may find that you make time for it. Many people involved in humanitarian work and activism have busy lives with jobs and families, so it doesn't have to be a barrier.

Marjoriefrobisher · 11/05/2024 06:40

Although I do deplore the impact on my Jewish friends and colleagues, I must say that.

People often complain about things but do nothing. Then nothing changes.

It's not difficult to arrange events. It's not difficult to act rather than just sit and complain.

talking in juvenile meaningless soundbites tends to be much more the preserve of the squeaky protestor types too

Well, if people aren't willing to be the change they want, they can't really complain if it doesn't happen.

The sort of people who agree with the OP tend not to be the sort of people with time or inclination to yell and scream on the streets, or indeed shriek on social media, as the pro Palestinian contingent like to do. But we are here, and I am quietly confident that there are many more of us than there are of the other sort.

Again with not sticking to the subject matter of the thread.

it’s surely a related subject. I’m sure you wouldn’t have made your claim without evidence for it, so let’s see it.

Looking forward to seeing the evidence for the « laying stakes » claim you made on the other thread. I’m sure you have it.

Well you seem to have plenty of time to shriek on social media.

If someone wants to organise a protest about this, they can. It's not hard to organise a protest. Be the change you want to see.

PickledMumion · 11/05/2024 06:01

You can certainly be critical of the current Israeli government without being antisemitic. But, in my experience, when push comes to shove, most people actually don't support the right of the Jews to live in their ancestral homeland.

Student protestor on the news yesterday was saying that it would be better if Jews were just dispersed around the world. No mention at all of the fact that Hamas have the openly stated aim of destroying Israel and all the Jews.

Sometimes anti-Jewish beliefs run so deep that people can't see it as antisemitic - they just see it as "common sense".

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 10/05/2024 22:08

A ceasefire involved both sides, last time I checked.

There has to be more thought given to the ‘day after’ of this war, I agree. I am not sure that proposal would effectively fit on a placard though, or that it’s the protester’s job to sort that out. Isn’t that what governments are for? Why are you directing your ire towards people protesting war?

Scirocco · 10/05/2024 22:07

We've done this thread before. Many times. Let's see if we can summarise it.

Hamas disarming, surrendering, whatever you call it won't change much of what Israeli forces do. It's been the stated position of the Israeli government that they intend to proceed with action regardless.

Hamas aren't receiving backing from the UK government. In fact, they're a proscribed terrorist organisation here. Our government, our industries and our taxes aren't (intentionally, at least) funding them.

There's no point marching against terrorism.

Then, we'll get the accusations of antisemitism, of supporting terrorists and the killing of innocents, etc.

Then there'll be the rebuttals and counter-rebuttals, ad infinitum.

Humdingerydoo · 10/05/2024 22:06

The only people I ever see protesting against Hamas, for a ceasefire and the release of the hostages are Israelis in Israel, including a lot of the family members of hostages.

TextureSeeker · 10/05/2024 22:02

I don't know why aren't they? Loads of people here seem to think it is key to ending this conflict so why aren't they out there with their signs? You think it is best for the Palestinian people, have you done this? If not, why, do you not want this conflict to end?

LargeAmericano · 10/05/2024 21:59

A nonsensical comparison as Al-Qaeda were never an elected government.

The ‘because they’re a terrorist organisation’ is very disingenuous as they are a recognised government and are accepted as such in negotiations with the international community which continues to give them power and credence.

More nonsense.

The atrocities of 7th October were repugnant. The onslaught on the citizens of Gaza is repugnant.
