Conflict in the Middle East

What steps can we take to help the Palestinians?

I appreciate that there is little we can do on a personal level and we really need our government to step up but with the situation so dire, I thought it might be useful to have a thread to share ideas on steps we can take to offer support in as many ways as possible.

My ideas so far are:

  • attend local demonstrations
  • if possible, donate to UNWRA or other aid agencies working in Gaza.
  • Write to David Cameron and your local MP via the PSC template https://palestinecampaign.eaction.online/rafah then circulate as widely as possible
  • close any Barclays Bank accounts.
  • Take part in the global financial strike on Friday. I read about this online and I need to find the details again. I think the idea is to spend no money at all on Friday, in order to send a shockwave through the global markets. I appreciate that realistically not enough people will probably take part in this for it to have an impact, but I’m just thinking I will try to do it as it’s an action I can take. I will add a link to the information when I can find it.
  • Boycott - BDS https://bdsmovement.net/Act-Now-Against-These-Companies-Profiting-From-Genocide
  • boycott Eurovision

If anyone can add actions we can take, please do. I am feeling so horrified and powerless, I just thought it would be good to know of every single way to help,

Yeah most definitely! You are absolutely right it will be rebuilt- BY ISRAEL! Gaza will become a colony and by extension ‘Israel’ just like they did with the rest of Palestine.

That’s why some Jewish groups in the West are already auctioning off the land.

Your last point about not many people going to help Gaza leaves a sour taste- when individuals like Rachel Corrie who did try to help were murdered by the Israelis.

Which « Jewish groups » are these?
im sure you have evidence for this claim; please share it.

It’s ’funny’ how pro-israelis are so worried about all the wrongs in the world, except for Palestinians.
That’s the only thing we should be looking away from.
Funny, huh? 🤔

If I had wanted to divert attention from Palestinian suffering then posting a link to an IGO which mentions it would be an odd thing for me to do, wouldn’t it?
The determination of you and others to focus exclusively on that and not other areas where people are suffering in conflict leads to the conclusion that your motives are political rather than humanitarian. Have the decency to be honest about that.

When the dust has settled and Israel have withdrawn from Gaza there will be a need for rebuilding the region. This will be literal construction but also the establishment or re-establishment of basic resources. Those who have protested week in and week out, taken part in sit ins, sit outside and boycott could actually go to the Palestinian territories and help. Gap yah perhaps?

Then again not many went there in the past....

We went. Some of us didn't come home.

For goodness sake people have already laid stakes in the rebranded Gaza! The one without Palestinians. Where to next? Lebanon or would Egypt and Jordan be easier?

Honestly move on to another thread.

I don't think we can do much to influence peace talks. The US withholding bombs must help, but Israel is on a revenge kick, and Netanhayu is captured by his far-right party. After the state's intelligence failures on Oct 7th, he can't afford to look soft on Hamas, plus there's the small problem of his corruption trial.

Unfortunately, those viral videos released by Hamas showing Palestinians celebrating the October 7th massacre have given ammunition to the idea that
most Gazans supported Hamas = are the same as Hamas. (I don't, and they don't deserve this suffering).

Right now, I am keeping my fingers crossed that the ground invasion of Rafeh does not go ahead and that a ceasefire will happen soon. In the meantime, I'm donating to WFP and focusing on education charities as the school infrastructure has been bombed to hell.

The irony is that all this squabbling over land might be obsolete in the next few decades. If the world reaches 3 degrees of warming, the Middle East will be uninhabitable.

Itsabeautufulday · 10/05/2024 15:52

The Palestinian representative at the United nations speaks so passionately. Shame he couldn't form a new governance for Palestinian for peace.

kirinm · 09/05/2024 10:57

Israel don't give a fuck about the hostages and have made clear over and over again that they'll continue the war whether the hostages are released or not.

If they were released by hamas, other terrorist organisations, citizens or whomever holds them if would actually increase pressure on Israel to stop.

Can you not see that? Take away that part straight away. Surely that would encourage more people to call for an end to conflict?

trampoline123 · 10/05/2024 13:34

I really don't want to get in to the politics of it, because anyone who supports this genocide needs their heads examining.

Late to the party but back to the original post.

I share all I can on social media platforms to raise awareness more than anything. Some people really think it's about self defence, it never has been. Awareness is crucial.

But thats just it, THIS thread is NOT about global suffering it IS about Palestinian suffering and helping Palestinians.

Your persistence for highlighting global issues on this thread suggests you are trying to minimise Palestinian suffering.

If you actually read the page I linked to, you’ll see the Palestine crisis is one on a distressingly long list of humanitarian crises the WFP needs funds to help deal with.
if you are genuinely motivated by compassion for suffering, I’m sure you will have no problem with me highlighting over situations of desperate need.

‘’You can't expect Israel to sit idly by and meekly accept Hamas to continue attacking them.’’

I am so so tired of this hypocrisy.

So Israel has a right to ‘self-defence’ but the Palestinians who are collecting the body parts of their children in plastic bags should ‘’sit idly by and meekly accept Israel to continue attacking them?’

To be totally honest- I think a lot of Muslims in this country knew that all this talk about human rights and equality and democracy for all was just a smokescreen. The actions of Israel and the reactions of those who are ready to justify such actions has finally proven that human rights and the like only exist for certain groups- some people are more equal than others after all!

Marjoriefrobisher · 09/05/2024 23:22

TakeMe2Insanity · 09/05/2024 23:12

And I’m curious as to HOW that would help the Palestinian people?

While I appreciate your desire to share the plight of the Ethiopians perhaps create a new thread for them or share it on stop the pro Palestinian marches thread?

there are a number of severe humanitarian crises ongoing at present, most of which are not getting any publicity at all. the WFP is probably one of the best organisations to support in this respect.

I dont know if this has been mentioned but you can download the 'No Thanks' app. You can use it to scan the barcodes of products you are going to buy and it will tell you if the manufacturer is connected to Israel. You can also search company names. Helpful if you don't want to support companies complicit in mass murder.

PeasfullPerson · 09/05/2024 21:54

Thanks for all of these useful ideas.

In my opinion any action no matter how small, is better than no action at all.

And for anyone who tells you that whatever action you decide to take is pointless, pity them for having such little faith in themselves to make an impact on the world around them, and be wary of their motives.

Change takes time, and even if the change you hope to see never arrives in your life time, you will at least know that you tried and stood up for what you believed in.

Fizzib · 09/05/2024 21:48

Make it clear to our politicians and any companies they work with that we do not consent for our tax money to go towards killing tens of thousands of Palestinians. There is such a thing as proportionate force and Israel hasn’t used that. it’s gone way overboard as per usual.

The US/Uk always find money for warmongering while claiming they can’t feed poor kids or fix housing crises. Sickening. No more!

Fizzib · 09/05/2024 21:44

TextureSeeker · 09/05/2024 12:39

Do you think if people hadn't have spoken out as strongly as they have multiple countries would have cut off arms supplies to Israel? Do you think Biden would have limited supplies to Israel and that he would be insistent on aid reaching Gaza? Israel started off about as hardline as you can get by announcing that they were going to starve everybody. If we all just ignored it and let Israel have their way do you really think given what they have done knowing that the world is watching them ie starving people, removing most healthcare, killing 1% of the population, destroying half of the populations homes, that if suddenly we all start saying yeah, blame Hamas for everything, Israel have no responsibility that would make Israel go oh shit starving children is actually wrong, we should really let people eat?

I think what has happened has shown that the only way to get Israel to temper themselves is for the US to threaten to/to actually remove money and weapons. Israel have shown us all what they will do if we turn a blind eye, that is why they have been killing journalists and have been refusing access to Gaza, they are trying to limit what we see because they want to be able to do whatever they like to Palestinians in peace.

Hear hear.

Some of these comments are appalling.

MPs will be debating a Palestinian Family Visa Scheme on Monday May 13th,
https://committees.parliament.uk/committee/326/petitions-committee/news/201354/visa-scheme-for-palestinians-to-be-debated-by-mps/ based on this petition https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/648577

You can use Write to Them to contact your MP to express support for offering refuge during a time of war. Please note, the suggestion is for a scheme to reunite Palestinians with their family in the UK so before anyone starts with the if they leave they won't be allowed to return schtick, nobody knows if that would truly be the case and this is not the place for a debate about it. The OP asked what could be done to help and although I recognise it's not a solution, I believe this is a respite and a right that should be made available to Palestinians should they wish to leave and reunite with their families in the UK.

I hope this can work but I know the Irish government were months trying to get an Irish citizen out of Gaza it is not easy to get anyone out.
