Conflict in the Middle East

Anyone seen the video where the police officer says a swastika is not anti-Semitic at a pro Palestine March?

I know there are lots of pro-Palestine supporters in this area of the board. If not anti-Semitic then what else is it standing for in this context? Apparently it was drawn on some protestors banners.

I will not stop defending the safety of Jewish people in this country with regards to my concerns about growing community tensions.
BUT …
In my view - The Israeli government has gone far far too far and seems to have lost its mind.

Try to imagine being the mother of one of these children and you might see that your comment requires an apology

I'm sure the mothers of the victims of 7 October might feel the same way about you dismissing their government's response to the atrocities as a "war crime."

OK I am really done for tonight!

I think the Oct 7th atrocities were a horrific crime. Some of the images remain in my head . I am sorry if you feel I didn’t respect the pain the Israeli community have suffered- I do

Before you go for the night, you might find it interesting to read the article posted in a separate thread about snipers targeting children.

When it comes to children- surely we can all just agree that they are ALL innocent and should not be targets in this terrible conflict. ( I include Israeli children hostages in this of course)

I would hope that would be the starting point for most people - that all children and other innocent lives lost, taken hostage and otherwise irrevocably impacted are deserving of our compassion.

Limesodaagain · 02/04/2024 18:37

I think it is very offensive to imply that people who are haunted by what is happening to Palestinian children ( that’s all of us surely ?) are using them as a “Trojan horse” to deliver messages about Israeli war crimes.
That is a twisted way to look at things.

I don't think people are ganging up on you any more than anyone else. People are questioning your posts some of which I find quite offensive so yes it stirs up anger and frustration. We all post our views and opinions on here with the full expectation that many people will disagree and take issue with what we post. I'm sure you're familiar with the saying "if you can't stand the heat ...."

I can stand heat. And proper debate. I can't stand irrational distortion.

Limesodaagain · 02/04/2024 18:42

And all civilian hostages and civilian casualties when it comes to that . None of it can be justified.

OK, I'm just basing it on my experience on other threads here on MN.

This is the thing: everyone mourns the deaths of Palestinian children. But to use this as a Trojan horse to deliver messages about "genocide" and "war crimes" is something else. That's what I object to.

That's not how I read the posts.

I also suspect that what you call "other terrorism" is what I call "war."

No. I was talking about attacks carried out by terrorist organisations. I was making a like for like comparison. Pro Palestinian posters are expected to protest about or post about every other conflict or the only reason they could possibly be concerned about Palestinians is because they are antisemites. I asked why the same is never asked of pro Israeli posters. Why are they not asked if they post about any other terror attacks or just this one. Why are they not asked if they marched for any other terror attacks or just this one. Why is it just people who are appalled by what is happening in Gaza that are expected to be actively engaged in protesting and posting about every other conflict on earth or they are clearly just antisemitic.

Badabingbadabooom · 02/04/2024 18:31

It’s obviously antisemitic. What’s your point?

TextureSeeker · 02/04/2024 18:31

Muthaofcats · 02/04/2024 17:49

So you’re pro Palestinian, but why aren’t you bothered about a nazi swastika being paraded through our streets? You’ve instantly asked for context which is hilarious as the reason the police response was outrageous was because they also said it’s context dependant.

simple yes or no for you: do you think a swastika at a demonstration (or any other context) is ever ok?

bit weird for you to bring up being pro Palestine in response to this; I’d imagine you’d be just as horrified by this no ? Regardless on your thoughts on Gaza?

It's not weird to bring up pro Palestinian when the OP specifically addressed people who are pro Palestinian in her OP.

If you are reading my posts so closely you will see that I very clearly condenmed the use of swastikas at protests.

Hope that clears up any 'weirdness' for you.

Strangely, some people manage to express compassion about the deaths of thousands of children and other innocent people without consistently following it with the word "but".

Oh FFs, that's a cheap shot, playing with semantics but removing logic.

This is absolutely nothing like saying "7 October was a bit rough, but Israel has asking for it for years."

Let me rephrase:
This is the thing: everyone mourns the deaths of Palestinian children. What I object to is when PPs use this emotional dart to deliver debatable/spurious messages about "genocide" and "war crimes."

I've had enough of this for this evening. I am sorry that people are dying. Flowers

The callousness of that response surprised even me.

I was just anticipating the "Well, look how cruel it is to bomb/starve children" comments if I mentioned how sadistic the attacks of 7 October were.
I have not seen any poster* *do anything but condemn the horrific Oct 7th attack so that was a big assumption on your part to make and a pretty distasteful comparison to make.

Yes, war is horrific and cruel.

Particularly when you continually commit war crimes and are being investigated for genocide

Yes, war is horrific and cruel. But terrorism takes this to another level.

A cock-up. They're quite common in wars.

Dibilnik · 02/04/2024 18:03

KestrelMoon · 02/04/2024 18:02

Not as common as they are in this war such that “cock ups” seem to be more the norm than the exception.

Don't be ridiculous.

EDITED TO ADD...
It's just occurred to me that many of the PPs here have never worked in a government job. I have, for decades, e.g. INTERPOL in the 1990s. You wouldn't believe how disorganised it all is.

Yet you seem to think that in a war situation, where chaos literally reigns, and communications are fucked up, and everyone is making snap decisions on the spot... You really seem to think that strategic plans are being implemented?

The objectives you're projecting onto this situation are like finding a melody in white noise.

War is an absolute fucking nightmare, relentless, unpredictable, chaotic, out of control. That's why it's a good idea to avoid it at all costs and not launch an attack like 7 October.
