The situation for Christians is especially desperate as most of them work in the tourism sector, which has been at a standstill since the conflict began.

The source told ACN that for Christians “wearing a cross can get you into trouble.
“Sometimes you have to hide your identity in your own homeland to avoid problems.
“The presence in the area of groups with increasingly radical elements makes our situation even more difficult.”

Lovely.

Yet another "let's blame the Jews" thread.

No Christian would ever blame all Jews for this- Our Lord, His Blessed Mother, the Apostles and most of the early converts were Jews and, we believe, are alive in Heaven so still ARE Jews. Any hatred is coming from certain sections of the Jewish popluation but far from all of them. Messianic Jews do not hate us at all for a start. Lookit, I understand that Jews must be feeling unjustly derided these days, and with valid reasons. I'm from an Irish family reared in England, and the hatred we got from some people when the IRA was at it's worst was horrible at times- it made me want to scream that NOT ALL IRISH people condoned the atrocities, far from it, so I'm certain not all Jews condone the extreme violence or hateful acts done by some Jews either. Irish people aren't hive-minded and neither are Jews I would think! We're all unique and all have our own consciences. However, if you research it, you will find out that worldwide, Christians are and always have been, the most oppressed and persecuted demographic and it's going to get worse for us before it stops altogether. Christ told us it would be like this and we don't like it but we have to live , or die, with it and we can't ever hate anyone for anything at all, because that offends Almighty God, and is a grave sin! God bless anyway, let's just all keep praying for peace!

Israel want to destroy Palestinians, they don't discriminate between colour/religion/creed. They have described them as the cancer that needs to be wiped out.

This is disinformation and completely unhelpful to the conversation.

The only place they're able to worship and live freely, is Israel

@Corinthiana this is what you wrote, and I'm saying it's not true. I did not call you a liar, I think you are probably just misinformed. I will also point out that I work with asylum seekers/refugees (in a legal capacity) and it is very well known that those claiming christian persecution or homosexuality are usually not true. Iranian 'christians' in particular. Muslim/christian relations in the ME are generally very good.

“Muslim/christian relations in the ME are generally very good.”
This is certainly not true of Iraq or Syria .

You didn’t specify which countries but you did say that they can only live freely in ME in Israel. If they can live as well in Jordan then Israel is not the only country

so, the other poster wasn’t accusing you of lying. It was correcting a sentence you had said.

He/she or they accused me of saying something "untrue". It was only partially.
I am not Jewish or Israeli, I have no skin in this game, but just spoke from what horrific stories I have heard, and some personal experience.
I understand the nature of this thread, so I think I will leave at this point.
Peace to all.

A quick search in google proofs that Christians live freely and can workship as well so Israel is not the only country in ME where they can do it.

Didn't you just make that point?

I never mentioned Jordan because I haven't met any Christian refugees from there. I can't say one way or another. So yes, if that person says so, maybe it's as welcoming as the Vatican.
Who knows.

I lived in Jordan for 2 years and can categorically say the above statement is untrue. Christians in Jordan make up about 4% of the population, and are very free to practise christianity. They are automatically exempt from (islamic) religious studies if they go to state schools, are granted all of the religious holidays off school and have their own religious curriculums and in fact schools. There are two towns that are almost exclusively christian. There is no difference between muslim/christian at all, the relation is very good. I knew many who had family in Palestine too and they said the same thing. Corey Gil Shushter did a christian Palestinian edition and they all said they are free to practise with the Muslims but under occupation of Israelis, which targets them.

Indeed why only focus on Israel when Christians are treated very badly throughout the ME? Negative towards Israel sees no end but not allowed to show others who are worse at all,? Strange that.

Yes, good point.

Weird huh? Context matters. Now, if it had been framed as: over the last 100 years Christians have been persecuted across the ME, including several genocides, and the situation in most places has got worse in recent years, including in Gaza. One place where they traditionally felt safe was Israel, but the situation there is also worsening etc.

it wouldn't then look like the only reason a person might be interested in Christian minorities in the ME is because its another opportunity to bash Israel & Jewish people.

I agree.

Context and framing.

I guess the others don't matter

Nobody has said that. Why are you so determined to pick a fight?

Indeed.

The parameters of discussion being shut down to only be critical of Israel and Christians whilst ignoring majority Muslim countries treatment of Christians is concerning.

YoYoYoYo12345 · 19/09/2024 13:26

SharonEllis · 19/09/2024 11:14

Ok, well I havent found much on that very specific question. Most material is written by people with a wider concern for Christians across the ME. There is a great deal published about that. I

And because they’re treated badly in other Muslim countries are we suggesting we turn a blind eye about the attacks they’re suffering in Israel?

Never suggested that. When everyone points at Israel it can be useful to show that surrounding Muslim countries aren't the good guys when it comes to how they treat Christians 🙄

we can for example talk about the report done by the Rossing center that I linked to yesterday.

in case people don’t know who this organisation is :

The Rossing Center for Education and Dialogue is an interreligious organization based in Jerusalem which promotes an inclusive society for all religious, ethnic and national groups. Through education, encounter, research and consulting, the Rossing Center promotes better relations between Jews, Christians and Muslims in the Holy Land.

@knitnerd90 There has also been prominent Rabbis who have spoken up against the persecution of Christians by these extremists.

"Rabbi Shlomo Ammar, chief rabbi of Jerusalem, is also concerned about the attacks on Christians. He recently took the unusual step of releasing a scathing letter against Jews who attack Christians.
The letter, written in English, reads, “We were sorry to hear from non-Jewish clerics that a number of young Jews and some who pretend to be G-d-fearing, persecute them with curses, blasphemies and more, as they walk the streets of the city. No doubt, irresponsible people who are not at all observant of the Torah and its ways did this. We announce that such behavior is strictly forbidden.”

Lettherebejustice · 19/09/2024 11:15

@knitnerd90 I agree with everything you have said there, in particular about the minority extremists. My concern is that as the Israeli government now have a increasing number of these extremists in their government and also in positions of power. The mayor of Jerusalem is another extremist who spews hate speech about Muslims and Christians. The minority have now become more emboldened with their hate.
