Out of the 901 off-line cases of anti-Muslim hate, there were 535 reports of abusive behaviour, 77 threats, 83 assaults, 79 acts of vandalism, 69 cases of discrimination, 39 acts of hate speech and 19 examples of anti-Muslim literature.

Greatest rise in anti-Muslim hate in UK since Hamas's attack on 7 October

Incidents included verbal threats, online abuse and in one instance, a Muslim family had the word "Hamas" written on their front door, a UK-based organisation has said.

Lemonyticket, you do realise that Muslims have been attacked and a little boy murdered since October the 7th in the US be a man went around damaging cars with the Palestinian flag in the window in the UK. We’ve had the far right trying to join pro -Israel protests , politicians spouting anti Muslim hatred.

That is true, to be fair, it is, and I am sorry for it.

I simply think this kind of thread is putting an "all lives matter" slant on the current situation.

I recall how awful Muslim persecution was after 9/11 and it paled in comparison to what's happening now.

It certainly feels like being gaslit when the streets are covered every single weekend in Jew hatred for months on end

Obviously, there should absolutely be a discussion around discrimination and hate being experienced by Muslims, but this: And there are multiple threads specifically discussing Antisemitism, as well as a dedicated board for Jewish posters
has appeared several times now, almost as some sort of complaint implying that Jewish posters are receiving preferential treatment and that they should stick to their own board rather than bringing conversations about antisemitism into a mainstream context.

There was a request made for a Jewish MNers board, has anyone made the request for a dedicated board for Muslim MNers? I’m sure it would be well supported.

People were not saying antisemitism shouldn't be mentioned they are questioning why the poster felt talking about anti muslim hate was gaslighting jews, which still hasn't been explained.

And there are multiple threads specifically discussing Antisemitism, as well as a dedicated board for Jewish posters

In a thread titled the rise in anti Muslim hate. Absolutely come on and share experiences of hate whoever it is targeted at as a form of solidarity but the poster wasn't doing that they were angry that we were were discussing anti muslim hate instead of antisemitism and even denied anti muslim hate was prevalent at the moment.

Scirocco · 03/04/2024 12:36

@RoastSquash given the amount of Anti-Muslim sentiment across these boards, I very much doubt we'll be seeing a dedicated board any time soon, and if we did, it would almost certainly just receive the same amount of abuse and derailment that threads elsewhere get if they touch on Islam at all.

It's not about implying anyone has received preferential treatment. It just feels a bit unfair that people are not allowed even one thread in which to discuss experiences of Islamophobia/ Anti-Muslim hate without it being dragged off topic.

And there are multiple threads specifically discussing Antisemitism, as well as a dedicated board for Jewish posters. This one thread was started with the hope that it could be a space to discuss and raise awareness of the discrimination and hate being experienced by Muslims. Why is that not acceptable? Should we have no space to discuss this?

Parkingt111 · 03/04/2024 12:09

@LemonyTicket what exactly is your issue with the thread? There's many many threads on Anti-Semitism and as far as I can seen only one on Anti-Muslim hatred yet you object?
Just because you don't see it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. And highlighting Anti-Muslim hatred doesn't equal down playing the rise in Anti-Semitism either.

I do not see mobs of people marching the streets or university campuses with racist hatred directed at Muslims.

I do not see Muslim businesses being targeted.

I do not see Muslim chaplains or Imams in hiding for danger of their lives after death threats.

What am I missing?

It feels to me this is gaslighting Jews. Not only because it's patently obvious that Jews are currently the minority group under extreme attack, but also because the perpetrators are more often that not, themselves Muslim.

I have a photo in front of me of girls in hijabs holding a sign saying "zionists off campus". I have videos of Muslims saying "Hitler was right". Week after week, I listen to them and frankly they are intimidating Jews.

Not only individual Muslims, but organisations, like 5 Pillars.

I am baffled over posts like this - it's denying the evidence of my eyes and ears. And it's a great shame people aren't addressing the elephant in the room, which is off-the-charts Muslim antisemitism.

Being middle eastern myself, I grew up with this - it's normalised. But to see it occurring in Britain and being gaslit with the DAVRO is jarring!

Just because you dont see it doesn't mean it isnt happening

The increase in both anti-muslim and antisemitic attacks has been reported in the media, if you choose to shut your eyes to these reports then that will be why you are missing them

I don't understand the view point that it needs to be one thing or another. Discussing anti-muslim attacks and hate crimes doesnt take anything away from the conversation about antisemitic attacks and hate crimes. There is room for both to be discussed without the discussion of one somehow becoming "gaslighting" of the other

LemonyTicket · 03/04/2024 11:46

Oh of course, anti-Muslim hate has existed for decades. I have been one of the strongest to speak out against it. And, quite rightly, if there was indeed mobs of people attacking Muslim businesses, or holding up signs in the streets and campuses saying "Muslims off Campus" or spouting anti Muslim hatred, then they'd rightly be arrested, expelled, shamed or otherwise stopped without hesitation.

Which is why I am pretty disgusted to see that now this is happening to Jews, people are pretending it's not, or diluting the reality of the situation by pretending it's six of one and half a dozen of the other. It's the ultimate "all lives matter" isn't it? It's shocked me to the core to be honest!

My son is terrified on his campus and completely excluded from many activities by these mobs. The Muslim students are not. Whilst they may have experienced many issues with bigotry, the problem facing the UK, US, Canada, Australia and other places is not currently anti Muslim hatred. It is anti Jew hatred. That is the evidence of your eyes and ears. Open them.

Can you explain how highlighting anti-Muslim hate is gaslighting Jewish people?

You also must have been living under a rock for the past 10 years if you have not been witness to it. I don't even live in the UK and it is very obvious to me but appears to have been normalised and accepted so maybe not as noticeable to you. I worked in disadvantaged communities in London in the early noughties as a community worker with many Muslim community groups and activists and I am so saddened to see how things have deteriorated for them, there was so much hope back then.

Scirocco · 03/04/2024 10:54

@LemonyTicket I am sorry that you and your family have experienced persecution and discrimination.

So have I. So have many others. So have our families.

One person's or group's experiences of hate crimes and prejudice does not invalidate or diminish the experiences of others. We can stand together and say all of it is wrong and that we want to live in a society in which we all can be safe.

You’re denying hate crime of a community. Just because you don’t see it it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. There are Muslim members in this thread that have mentioned the hate they’ve been exposed to. You’re a hate denier

I agree it isn’t impartial. Some of the comments that have been allowed to stand are surprising, and some of the comments that have been removed are ridiculous. Must get round to properly complaining!

Scirocco · 01/04/2024 12:20

Nope, just 'keeping an eye on it'. I'm tired of having to 'challenge it in the thread'. Other forms of hate speech are removed though.

I’ve been left quite disheartened by mumsnet’s monitoring of this subject matter. It certainly isn’t impartial.

Oakstreet · 02/04/2024 13:11

FrownedUpon · 22/02/2024 19:29

It’s not really a surprise. The aggressive weekly protests don’t help. The hatred my Jewish neighbours are experiencing is vile.

I've reported this as not genuine. Having been to the protests, and seen Jewish people there protesting against innocent children God bless them. And human beings I will not stand and accept this posters comment. People want an end to the violence by the military who are opening committing a genocide.

Scirocco · 02/04/2024 13:06

Islamophobia and racially motivated harm often goes unreported, uncharged and unacknowledged.

This article doesn't make it clear, but it's locally known that this was a young boy whose only 'crime' was being visibly Muslim. He's 13 years old. A child. People had enough hate in their hearts to stab a child.

Very glad the young man is recovering well.

No indication anywhere at all that this was racially motivated. In fact, if it was, you'd expect to find the Sheriff Court hearing on 13 March being widely reported as such. Not a peep.

Was that a written response by Mumsnet to you?
If it was I'd be reporting them with evidence of that response to you because Islamophobia is a hate crime

There was a thread in mn the other day about how it’s allowed anti Muslim talk in mn. Nothing relate. With Middle East board but several comments were outrageous and a poster decided to open a thread about it
