Agreed, the ferocity of the hatred and the speed with which it can be globally amplified on SM is terrifying. I despair of people who choose to exploit suspicion, intolerance and division when they could use their platforms to really make a positive difference.

Yup, twitter was a cesspit yesterday in terms of antisemitism and Islamaphobia.

Rachel does need to consider the factions that she's encouraging as many of those people are only supporting her so that they have an "acceptable" way to be openly racist towards Muslims. As soon as it is no longer useful they'll return to their standard operating procedure of blaming Jewish people (note: I'm not trying to be antisemitic, but these supremacist sorts hate all minorities).

Twitter then went into an antisemitic meltdown, with proclamations such as Jews shouldn’t be allowed to live in Australia, the usual blood libel about them killing women and children and suggestions of witch hunts trying to find out where Jewish communities are in Sydney, particularly in wealthy suburbs. Absolutely shameful.

A lot of prominent accounts amplified the incident as being "Islamist" in nature and promoted a lot of hateful racist attacks.

You suggested I was complaining about another minority group getting "preferential treatment", which wasn't the case or intention. I was clarifying.

As for a safe space for Muslim posters, we can't even get Islamophobic posts removed. We won't be getting a designated board any time soon.

@Scirocco Yes, I understand and acknowledge all that and I’m not really sure why you’re responding to me as if I’ve disagreed with any of it or need it to be explained to me. No-one has said this thread is unacceptable or shouldn't exist but people with differing views on the subject will join the discussion, as occurs on every single other thread.

If you’d like Muslim MNers to have a dedicated board to use as an additional safe space, you can request it.

@RoastSquash just as there is a need for spaces where people can feel safe sharing their experiences of other forms of hatred and prejudice (including Antisemitism), I believe there is a need for a space where people can feel safe sharing their experiences of Anti-Muslim hatred and prejudice. One should not diminish the other.

Someone objected to the existence of this thread, describing it as 'gaslighting' and detracting from (presumably more valid in their eyes) concerns about Antisemitism. I don't see how one, relatively small, thread about a minority group experiencing a dramatic increase in hatred and prejudice directed towards it, should be so unacceptable. Nobody is forced to click on it or read it or contribute to it. And it doesn't seem unreasonable for derailment to be highlighted and for people to ask for it to stop, just as would be the case when derailment happens on other threads.

@Dulra please take the time to read mine and @Scirocco posts properly because you seem to be (wrongly) assuming and referring to a completely different discussion. Or are you replying to @LemonyTicket but have quoted me by mistake?

The threads discussing antisemitism are constantly derailed and misappropriated, such is the nature of these things.

If no-one’s even willing to ask, I don’t know how you can predict the request for a dedicated board will be denied. And yes, no doubt there would also be the occasional unpleasant incursion from unwelcome posters, as occurs on all the minority boards on MN.
