Interesting situation: side by side placement of the flags.

It’s the bit, should a person on stage start arguing with the crowd? Should members of the audience object to flags on stage?

@Babyboomtastic why was the man racist? That's not a brilliant comparison tbh.

He's not IMO.

But the Comedian wasn't antisemetic either. Awful, but not antisemetic IMO.

My point is that someone claiming 'I am from x group and this is racist/sexist/transphobic/antisemetic' should be listened to, but their opinion isn't determinative.

As usual on here, a pro-Palestinian is accused of something so straight away an Israeli is accused of the exact same thing but in reverse.

The audience member did nothing wrong. He was not racist because he didn't fucking say or do anything! He didn't argue with the "comedian", the "comedian" argued with him. Why are you using the victim in this situation to somehow try and score a point? Why can't you just accept that Paul Currie behaved despicably and leave it at that? No buts needed. Regardless of the audience members religion, he was a victim of intimidation and harassment. Just condemn it and move on.

I did say that he behaved unacceptably, several times in fact. He was offensive and abusive.

I was taking issue with the 'if I say it's antisemetic it is' given how selectively that principle is used. Being a member of a group gives you insight but doesn't make your opinion sacrosanct. Just because I feel something is sexism, doesn't mean it is, just because in a woman.

I don't think the man in the audience was racist. I don't think the comedian was antisemitic.

For the hundredth time, he was not asked to stand for the flag.

He says that he'd enjoyed the show until the Palestinian flag was brought out and then argued with the comedian that it was wrong to compare it to Ukraine.

If that behaviour was deemed racist by a Palestinian, should we accept without question that he was racist, in the same way you saw we should about antisemetism?

What behaviour was racist? Not standing for a flag?

If a Palestinian told you that they considered this man's behaviour as racist, would you accept that it was therefore racist?

As a white woman I try to refrain from telling women of colour that something they feel is racist, isn't. I'm not black or Asian...it's not up to me to dismiss their experience.

As a Jewish woman I object to people telling me that certain things aren't actually anti semetic and actually I'm totally misunderstanding it.

This is it: unacceptable for any reason. I think he got caught up in mob mentality himself and didn’t stop to think that there’s a world outside the echo chamber. Shows how dangerous groupthink is.

Lord of the flies comes to mind.

I agree the audience member shouldn’t of equated the Palestinian flag with Hamas (after all Palestinians are not all terrorists any more than Israelis are all genocide supporters).

If he was Israeli it must of come as a shock to see it though and the comedian yelling at him to get out is harassment at the very least.

Have you seen the news reports of convoys of agitants driving round majority Jewish neighbourhoods whilst flying this flag...it is being used as a symbol of something rather like another one was many years ago.

Babyboomtastic · 15/02/2024 10:59

Parkingt111 · 15/02/2024 10:58

@Babyboomtastic I don't think there's anything wrong with calling for a ceasefire or peace and thank you for the clarification.
I just don't like any sort of being mean or initimidation in any circumstances so I think that should be called out as you did say regarding being rude and sweary

Agreed.

He was being a total dick to an audience member. Just not an antisemetic dick.

stomachamelon · 15/02/2024 10:53

@Scirocco I agree.
@Parkingt111 that's a good point Also. I don't think I have ever been in a situation where I would either want or need to stand for any flag.

Babyboomtastic · 15/02/2024 10:47

Parkingt111 · 15/02/2024 10:19

@inkworks273 I don't think he should have asked him why he wasn't standing. As nobody should have to stand up for any flag.

Edited

No one was standing for a flag. The flag was brought out about 5 minutes before the end, the show continued. The Comedian encouraged a standing ovation and then queried why 2 people in the front row were still sat down.

He shouldn't have asked. It's none of his business. Perhaps they didn't enjoy the show. Perhaps they had a physical disability that would have made standing difficult. Perhaps they were trying to hold in a fart. It's a bit odd to choose front row seats and not stand, but that's their call to make.

From what I've read, him being Jewish wasn't even raised. I don't think him being Israeli was raised either, but Israeli doesn't= Jewish any more than Jewish= Israeli.

The comedian was very rude in his sweary rant asking him to leave, but there's nothing antisemitic in either what happened initially or calling for a ceasefire and peace.

@Scirocco

A well worded and accurate summary.

Parkingt111 · 15/02/2024 10:13

Scirocco · 15/02/2024 10:09

The way I see it is that a mediocre (at best) comedian has used the horrific situations in Ukraine and Gaza and Israel, to boost his own profile, and he hasn't given a sh*t who gets hurt in the process or who he disrespects.

The people who have died in those conflicts are not fuel for his quest for celebrity and he has disrespected everyone affected by those conflicts.

He jumped on the opportunity to generate more attention for himself by verbally abusing that audience member and inciting others to do the same. Everyone who joined in should be ashamed of themselves.

You know what In this instance i was actually thinking the same thing, but I didn't know how best to word it.

inkworks273 · 15/02/2024 10:08

@Parkingt111 He wasn't asked to stand up for the flag. The comedian noticed he wasn't standing at the end of the show. When asked why, the man said he had enjoyed the show until the flag was displayed.

I don't know why people keep insisting he refused to stand for the flag when that's not what happened.

Parkingt111 · 15/02/2024 10:05

@Humdingerydoo
He was made to leave because Paul Currie behaved atrociously. That's the only reason.

Agree with this. At the minimum it's bullying and intimidating behaviour, and not acceptable.
I don't believe that anyone should have to stand up to any flag of any country.
Thats just my opinion

Humdingerydoo · 15/02/2024 09:57

inkworks273 · 15/02/2024 09:52

@ABCDEFGHIJK123456 No, he wouldn't stand up and clap for the comedian BECAUSE the comedian displayed the Palestinian flag. He wasn't asked to stand and clap for the flag.

If the comedian asked the man to leave because he was Jewish or Israeli then I condemn him. That is wrong.

If the comedian asked the man to leave because he supports what Israel is doing in Gaza then I don't have much sympathy for him.

That's the bottom line for me. Everyone is free to disagree with me. You are entitled your opinion and I am entitled to mine.

FFS he was made (not asked - stop minimising) to leave for not wanting to stand up when the Palestinian flag was waved.

He was NOT made to leave because he supports anything happening in Gaza since he was never even asked if he supports what is happening in Gaza.

He was made to leave because Paul Currie behaved atrociously. That's the only reason.

This whole thread and the picking apart of every possible thought process and action is just semantics.

Gaslighting at its finest. Maybe this happened in Nazi Germany....maybe non jews sat round and discussed how being forced to wear a star on your arm or forced to live in a ghetto wasn't actually so bad....and not actually a big deal....
