Interesting situation: side by side placement of the flags.

It’s the bit, should a person on stage start arguing with the crowd? Should members of the audience object to flags on stage?

Venue says Paul Currie will not be invited back after allegations he verbally abused man who objected to Palestinian flag

You can't imagine why a Jewish person sitting in a crowd of people clapping and/or cheering for the Palestinian flag would feel threatened?

It’s a Palestinian flag what’s so threatening about it? It’s the legal flag of Palestine . not Hamas ,

And why was the issue just with one flag but not the other?

“The young man, who we discovered soon after was Israeli, replied: ‘I enjoyed your show until you brought out the Palestinian Authority flag.’”
The audience member claimed Currie told the man: “Get out of my show. Get the fuck out of here. Fuck off, get the fuck out of here.”

the Audience member sounded so entitled and petulant as well as the comedian , both were dickheads .
A non story , people desperately trying to blow out of proportions.

So if instead of the Palestinian flag, he had brought out the Israeli flag and a muslim person didn't clap or cheer for it... would you call them entitled and petulant?

Maireas · 14/02/2024 12:57

If Jewish people tell us it's a problem, then we need to listen to them.
I'm shocked by the increase in antisemitism in the UK. If we don't stand up to it, question it, challenge it, then it will continue, and get worse.

etmoiandme · 14/02/2024 12:54

That it's a "non-story" to you @queenofarles yet is a pretty horrifying story to many Jewish people says quite a lot to be honest.

etmoiandme · 14/02/2024 12:52

No he didn't. He just didn't stand up to give the ovation demanded of the audience. And then when he was picked on to explain why, he gave his reason.

No surprise at some of the contortions on this thread though.

inkworks273 · 14/02/2024 12:49

From the information we have the audience member had a problem with the Palestinian flag and was then told to get out. It is being implied that he was thrown out because he was Jewish. I'm asking for more information before determining whether what happened was antisemitic or not. What's wrong with that?

I don’t know the reason he was hounded out. It may have been neither of those reasons. That’s why I’m waiting for more information to see what was said before forming a judgement either way.

Do you always wait for more information? Like, are you waiting for the court to decide there is in fact a genocide going on before you start calling what's happening in Gaza a genocide? Or do you only wait for all the facts when it suits your particular narrative of choice?

Edited to explain that I'm only using that as an example because you've been calling it a genocide throughout this thread and others

inkworks273 · 14/02/2024 11:10

@Comedycook The person couldn't have felt that threatened considering they were the one making a fuss about it being displayed.

You reached this conclusion based on what then?

Since you're waiting for all the facts

Humdingerydoo · 14/02/2024 12:28

I mean, the facts have been provided in the form of a third party who made the original complaint. It's all there in the link I shared.

inkworks273 · 14/02/2024 12:28

Humdingerydoo · 14/02/2024 12:21

So what were you saying when you said "If the person was hounded out because he was Jewish then that is abhorrent. On the other hand, if he was hounded out because he is a genocide supporter then I’d say that’s fair enough."

Which of those two reasons is the reason he was hounded out according to the article?

Februaryfeels · 14/02/2024 12:28

@inkworks273 Ah ok. That's entirely reasonable, to get facts before jumping in

Hmm
inkworks273 · 14/02/2024 12:26

Februaryfeels · 14/02/2024 12:21

@inkworks273 What further information do you need before forming your opinion?

Exactly what was said on both sides.

inkworks273 · 14/02/2024 12:25

Comedycook · 14/02/2024 12:14

And also call out people who are just sitting and not joining in, according to you?

No. If the person was just quietly sitting there then I agree that is wrong. That’s why I said I would wait for more information before forming an opinion.

Humdingerydoo · 14/02/2024 12:21

inkworks273 · 14/02/2024 11:36

@Humdingerydoo No that is absolutely not what I am saying.

I would never generalise an entire group like that.

Edited

Jesus Christ. Yes we absolutely should call out people who support genocide.

And also call out people who are just sitting and not joining in, according to you?

They weren't "making a fuss"

The so called comedian asked him directly why he wasn't standing up for the Palestinians flag and he answered because he was Israeli

Cue the sheep in the crowd turning on him

That's according to the original complaint, not from the man they all rounded on, but from an observer who was disgusted and left

nutjobs · 14/02/2024 12:10

Rocknrollstar · 14/02/2024 09:38

In the end it wasn’t about flags. An Israeli was threatened by the performer and the crowd and had to leave the theatre. Jews used to feel that this was a safe country. Now we have non-Jewish friends offering us sanctuary if we need it and we are threatened in the street , on campus and in theatres. There is a difference between supporting Ukraine and supporting terrorists. How would you expect the government to react if your loved ones were massacred at Glastonbury?

why are Palestinians terrorists?

Shelaugh · 14/02/2024 11:55

What if someone supports the Israeli military and doesn’t believe that it’s genocide? Should we harass people who disagree with us even if they do support genocide? Is that what happens in a civilised democracy?

Jesus Christ. Yes we absolutely should call out people who support genocide.

Not standing and clapping is the opposite of making a fuss.

Definitely should not happen in a civilised society which is why, as I am aware, he is being investigated for his actions.

Shelaugh · 14/02/2024 11:55

inkworks273 · 14/02/2024 11:28

Thanks for clarifying. I guess I’ll wait to see if more information comes out before forming an opinion. Like did Paul Currie know the person was Jewish? If the person was hounded out because he was Jewish then that is abhorrent. On the other hand, if he was hounded out because he is a genocide supporter then I’d say that’s fair enough.

This isn't about a display of the Palestinian flag. Nobody here is complaining that a private individual is displaying any foreign flag on their own private property.

This is a comedy show. It is not a place to fly flags. It is outrageous to demand that audience members who have come to watch a show stand in ovation to any flag. It is even more outrageous to single out and argue with and heckle audience members who refuse to do so.

Yeah I mean this is literally what totalitarian states do: force people to salute/applaud/stand for a flag or symbol. That’s why images of Nazi Germany of full of people doing the hitler salute.

Shelaugh · 14/02/2024 11:50

Imo excuse there is no excuse, ever, for:

singling someone out due to their religion, nationality, ethnicity, political opinions and then

inciting a mob to shout at that person until he is driven from the venue.

It is particularly awful when that person is Jewish because of the general persecution they face, but it’s still bad even if it’s just someone disagreeing with you politically. We live in a pluralistic democracy, we can’t persecute people for disagreeing with us.

stormy4319trevor · 14/02/2024 11:44

@inkworks273 I understand why people do, but my honest opinion is that of course, in a diverse society, this causes problems. Everyone who lives in the UK should only get behind the British flag, because that is what unites us. It is fine to disagree with military action - and I understand that war may be inaccurate for this situation, just unsure what else to call it - but I think we need peace and unity here in Britain, not to import the full force of partisan feeling here.
