Interesting situation: side by side placement of the flags.

It’s the bit, should a person on stage start arguing with the crowd? Should members of the audience object to flags on stage?

Soho theatre bans comedian after ‘verbal abuse’ of Jewish audience members

Venue says Paul Currie will not be invited back after allegations he verbally abused man who objected to Palestinian flag

Jesus Christ. Yes we absolutely should call out people who support genocide.

I’m not talking about ‘calling out’, which I take to mean challenging or disagreeing. I’m talking about a mob shouting, harassing and ultimately driving someone out. In a civilised society, we don’t harass people. If they’ve broken the law we go through the process of prosecution etc but we don’t let vigilantism rule.

queenofarles · 14/02/2024 14:00

So it's always entitled and petulant not to clap and cheer for any flag that appears on stage? who said that? Please go back to my original post and reread it , I said both were.
Again I watched two interviews by Liahav, he did not say anything about being kicked out for being Jewish or Israeli, he was kicked out for not liking the Palestinian flag .
Both were being unreasonable , but it’s not what people are trying to make it sound like.

inkworks273 · 14/02/2024 13:56

@DreamVortex It has nothing to do with the group but the individual and their opinion. There are Israeli's who support what their government is doing and those who don't. Just like there are non Israeli's who support the Israeli government and those who don't.

DreamVortex · 14/02/2024 13:51

inkworks273 · 14/02/2024 13:01

@Comedycook It's hardly the same is it? One country is an occupier and an oppressor and a genocide committer while the other is a victim of those things.

So it's fine to hound someone from one group out of the theatre but not someone from another group.

audience member is entitled he said on LBC "Paul produced a Ukrainian flag followed by a Palestinian flag, which upset me and I’m sure would have upset any Ukrainian , WTF? That’s quite a discrimination to say that.

So if instead of the Palestinian flag, he had brought out the Israeli flag and a muslim person didn't clap or cheer for it... would you call them entitled and petulant?
yes most definitely this is childish . It goes both ways .

Maybe your brother/cousin/friend was just murdered by them?

And they STILL want to murder you.

What, so if your brother/cousin/friend was murdered by a British person you'd object to the Union Jack being flown anywhere? And you'd think THEY want to kill you? Every Palestinian is not a terrorist, neither is every Jewish person (Jewish groups have committed terror acts too). I'm sure most rationally minded people believe that.

@puncheur That was me who wrote that, not @inkworks273 I'm thinking of what is best for my country as a whole. In theory, the national flag is a symbol of unity. As far as I can see, the flying of other countries' flags during a period of conflict, ramps up division in my society. So, I'm not generally in favour of it, unless it's in peace time and accompanies a cultural/artistic exhibition or similar. If there are UK citizens who see the flag as a symbol of oppression, I expect they don't object loudly when it's publicly displayed, since you'd expect to see it here. Kind of a given if you live here, really.

Some people living in Britain aren't in Britain by choice. I.e nationalists in Northern Ireland.

You are obviously not familiar with the tensions caused in NI around flags, whether it's nationalists wanting the Irish flag and Unionists wanting the Union Jack it definitely is a symbol of oppression for some and they do object loudly when it is displayed.

queenofarles · 14/02/2024 13:38

What if the audience member was not Israeli or Jewish,? Would people still be up in arms?
I watched two interviews on X and he did not mention saying it to the comedian. He was thrown out , rather rudely, for disagreeing with the comedian.

”Everyone who lives in the UK should only get behind the British flag, because that is what unites us.”

Wow, you really have no idea what the U.K. is do you? The British flag is a hated symbol of oppression for many U.K. citizens. It’s even referred to as “the butcher’s apron”.

Paul Curry is a Catholic from Belfast so little chance of him standing up for the British flag. In saying that I don't agree that anyone should be forced to stand up for any nations flag or anthem.

ConnieCounter · 14/02/2024 13:37

There seems to be some misinformation on this thread. This article gives the views of the man in question, and other audience members for a more balanced view. Belfast comedian Paul Currie at centre of controversy amid claims Jewish member of audience “hounded” out – The Irish News

The comedian didn't ask anyone to cheer for the flags, he asked them to cheer for the gig, which had ended. He didn't question why the man in the audience wasn't applauding for the flag, he asked why he wasn't applauding the gig.

The man in the audience claims he was shouted at, and others say the comedian gave a passionate speech in favour of a ceasefire. Who knows. We weren't there.

Comedian Paul Currie appears at the Belfast Children's Festival next month

I don't doubt that the audience members were offended. But nowhere in the Guardian article does it mention what was said by either the comedian or the audience members. Context is everything. Without knowing exactly what was said it is impossible to form an opinion either way.

It's been reported across most news sites. not to mention social media. It's really, really not hard to find. There's also interviews, including with the gentleman himself as well as witnesses.

Februaryfeels · 14/02/2024 13:16

queenofarles · 14/02/2024 12:42

You can't imagine why a Jewish person sitting in a crowd of people clapping and/or cheering for the Palestinian flag would feel threatened?

It’s a Palestinian flag what’s so threatening about it? It’s the legal flag of Palestine . not Hamas ,

And why was the issue just with one flag but not the other?

“The young man, who we discovered soon after was Israeli, replied: ‘I enjoyed your show until you brought out the Palestinian Authority flag.’”
The audience member claimed Currie told the man: “Get out of my show. Get the fuck out of here. Fuck off, get the fuck out of here.”

the Audience member sounded so entitled and petulant as well as the comedian , both were dickheads .
A non story , people desperately trying to blow out of proportions.

It's such a non story that it made me sit up and notice and also prompted mumsnetters to post about it yesterday. The comedian has been banned from the venue now

Oh for goodness sake the only thing the audience member was "occupying" was his seat at a comedy show! Genuinely disgusted that folk on here think such horrific mob harassment can be excused.

From the information we have the audience member had a problem with the Palestinian flag and was then told to get out. It is being implied that he was thrown out because he was Jewish. I'm asking for more information before determining whether what happened was antisemitic or not. What's wrong with that?

And yet you were quick to jump to the conclusion that the victim was making a fuss

etmoiandme · 14/02/2024 13:07

Maireas · 14/02/2024 12:57

If Jewish people tell us it's a problem, then we need to listen to them.
I'm shocked by the increase in antisemitism in the UK. If we don't stand up to it, question it, challenge it, then it will continue, and get worse.

Thank you.
