Standing up for Israel

I think one of the biggest issues on this board (and anywhere online really) is that standing up for Israelis and their right live in Israel is equated to being a genocidal Zionist extremist. Most of us who stand up for Israelis don't support Netanyahu, Ben-Gvir, the leaders of the IDF, or the murder of tens of thousands of Palestinians. Believing Israel has a right to exist as a Jewish state.in the holy land doesn't mean the eradication of Palestine and it's citizens. Israel is certainly flawed (it's government is case and point), but it is the only place where LGBT people can live safely in the Middle East, it is one of the the only Middle Eastern countries that values women, and it is the only place in the Middle East where Jewish people are welcome. Changes absolutely need to be made, but the continued existence of Israel should be supported.

Yes - I don’t think Gaza was a good place to be gay before October 7th - but now it is hell on earth for everyone- gay or straight.

It'll certainly be safer than Gaza anyway where more than 1 out of every 100 people have been killed in the past few months.

I think they have more pressing political issues at the moment but hopefully they will address that soon

Very, very sad. Just goes to show that homophobic arseholes pop up everywhere, even in countries which protect LGBTQI rights. A quarter of a million people attend Tel Aviv Pride annually. How does that compare to Pride celebrations in other Middle Eastern countries?

That was ten years ago ( still terrible though) . Unfortunately you still get homophobia even in liberal democracies. We’ve had horrible homophobic murders in the UK. The fact remains that Israel is a safer country for gay people than any other country in the Middle East . It’s not pink washing

That’s good if it genuinely helps, but I have seen friends in real life spiralling down through engaging online in this way.

As for me, I’m here because I was curious - in all the years I have never seen a thread left standing with so many deleted posts in it.

I didn’t see the deleted posts so this is not a reference to that.
I think any right minded person would be horrified at what is happening in Gaza.
I can also understand how threatened Israelis feel as they are surrounded by terrorist militants on all sides - Hamas, Hezbollah, Houthis and numerous other smaller groups.
I think Tatumm was correct - inflammatory language on here is not going to help the people in Gaza.

I don’t disagree but why shoulder the emotional expenditure to engage with people who are unlikely to change their views. I don’t feel it’s healthy or productive. I’d much rather channel my feelings into practical action. As you say, you have no idea what posters are doing outside of Mumsnet.

I do other things too. I boycott, donate, sign petitions, write to my mp etc.

I am devastated by what’s happening. It makes me sick to my stomach. It makes me angry. Coming here and being able to talk about it with other people is an outlet for me. That’s why I post.

I think people should stand up against racism and hate speech wherever it occurs. There was some dreadful hate speech deleted from this thread earlier, extremely racist and dehumanising. It is far from the first post along those lines that has been deleted. I think it is natural to want to have a voice where ever you can when 1000s of innocent people are dying preventable deaths aided by the British government. Right now people are starving to death and the British government has decided to stop aid. That's huge. The UK is selling arms to a country that the ICJ has said may plausibly be committing genocide. Again that is huge, the UK has responsibilities under the genocide convention that need to be adhered to. It's totally normal for people to be appalled and want to talk about that.

Deleting posts showing appreciation and acceptance of genocide isn't partisan, it's human.
