I’ve read that in the last few days Starmer is concerned about the Muslim people not voting labour cuz of his position

https://amp.theguardian.com/politics/2024/jan/30/labour-acts-on-fears-muslims-will-not-vote-for-party-over-gaza-stance

do you think this will have an impact on this years general elections ? I guess whatever they do they’ll lose votes

What would happen to Israel if the west withdrew its support?

What will happen to Palestine if west continues supporting Israel and looking to the other side whilst it is committing war crimes and breaking international law ?

A spokesperson for the FCDO said: "This government is committed to upholding international law. We have made clear that we will not export items if they might be used to commit or facilitate a serious violations of international humanitarian law.

"There is an ongoing review process to assess whether Israel is complying with international humanitarian law, which the Foreign Secretary initiated on day one in office.

I am sure it will be going on, and on, and on …..

BelleHathor · 18/08/2024 00:50

Maybe the Israeli government should have considered that question before repeatedly breaking International laws allegedly in self defence.

I sure hope that they are thinking about how long Western support will last when the younger generation who have witnessed live in 4K the atrocities being committed and are mostly alarmed are the politicians in the future. Perhaps if Israel actually wants to survive it will have to learn how to get along with it's neighbours.

He certainly didn't hold back in his letter. Depressing how his attempts to blow the whistle were ignored at every level.

I think you are right but also have the impression that Israel is deliberately prodding them and the impression that certain Israeli factions seem to want to fight them.

I think the far right Israeli factions are also an appalling threat for everyone in the region.

The constant threat from Iran ( and the terrorist groups it funds ) is the reason why the west supply weapons to Israel. Without the support of the west Israel would be destroyed as it is surrounded by hostile forces . Israel is faced by existential threat and yet they face far more criticism than the instigator of all this horror.

I have been in central London and seen a small group of exiled Iranians protesting in Trafalgar Square about the Iranian government ( oppression of women, LGBT etc, brutal torture and rape in prisons, forced confessions, executions ). Sadly they were either ignored or abused by the pro Palestinian protesters.

There is a constant focus on Israel whereas Iran’s horrific atrocities and it’s undercover machinations have received little condemnation on here.

A threat to Iran not to reiterate which Iran will of course ignore. Same thing Israel has been doing for nearly the last year (&beyond)

Statement from the uk with a few other countries

https://x.com/Keir_Starmer/status/1822895754140078268

shame they’ve missed the condemning of what is going on in Palestine in their statement

That letter seems to bring up an image of all those signatories who are voicing concern keeping the matter just out of reach so no one of them needs to actually touch it, and so that it is more difficult to blame any one country within the collective for effectively ignoring the way Israel is behaving so disproportionately in their war against Gaza.

In my opinion, the U.K. would never go against America no matter what the U.K. government or its people think. So anything Kier Starmer says is likely to be for form’s sake, but he would not amstop arming Israel.

The same would go for the U.K. stopping arms to Saudi Arabia because of the harm they are doing to Yemenis. Not stopping arms to SA that are being used against Yemenis also helps Israel/USA.

Eugh?

Sometimes, just sometimes, it's not about Gaza.

His post was about Ukraine. It was cringey watching all the virtual signallers attempting a pile on.

This.

If you posted anything about any other conflict on the millions of Gaza threads you get jumped on. Posters wont allow it. Yet post on Ukraine what about Gaza appears to be OK to some.

I have no issue with, and in fact fully agree with, unequivocal condemnation of the horrendous acts taking place in Ukraine by Russian forces. I think it's sad that people don't show the same concern for the lives of Palestinian children. Or, for that matter, children suffering and dying in other terrible circumstances around the world. Why are human empathy and compassion not for all? It's right to feel and express sympathy for the innocent lives lost and changed forever by Russian violence in Ukraine. It's a shame that some of the voices expressing this have been unable or unwilling to express similar depth of concern and compassion when similarly awful things have happened to a different population.

So the right thing to do would have been to start separate Twitter threads.

Piling onto a tweet about Ukraine and making it about gaza is out of order

Dulra · 09/07/2024 20:23

wtfissummer · 09/07/2024 19:42

So let me get this straight

Sir Keir Starmer denounces the Russian attacks on Ukrainians.

He should have added a ps and listed all the other killings he denounces. Just to satisfy the frothers because for forbid he should not mention Gaza in a tweet about Ukraine.

By all means "hold him to account" (if you're British) but FFS let the grief over Ukrainians murders be expressed without the whataboutism

Every western nation condemned the bombing of the children's Hospital it is was horrific. I work with many Ukrainian refugees and they are devastated I have been able to offer my condolences to them in person. Something I have not been able to do with Palestinians.
Every western nation also immediately called the bombing out as a war crime. I cannot stand hypocrisy so I do think it should be called out when it happens. Why are some children's lives worth more than others. If you think that's eugh so be it

It takes a special sort of person to hijack a recognition of the horror of russia bombing hospitals in Ukraine to bang the "free free Palestine" drum.

What about, what about, what about. Pathetic.

It is absolutely the right time to highlight the hypocrisy and remind the newly elected prime minister that arms, from the country he is now governing, sold to Israel are killing innocent children.

It takes a special sort of person to equate killing innocent Palestinian children to some kind of bang of the drum chant.

Scirocco · 09/07/2024 18:28

Children in Ukraine deserve to be safe from Russian bombs and guns.

Children in Palestine deserve to be safe from Israeli bombs and guns.

Eugh.. It sounds like you don't think Palestinian children's lives are worth as much as Ukrainian children's.
