I’ve read that in the last few days Starmer is concerned about the Muslim people not voting labour cuz of his position

https://amp.theguardian.com/politics/2024/jan/30/labour-acts-on-fears-muslims-will-not-vote-for-party-over-gaza-stance

do you think this will have an impact on this years general elections ? I guess whatever they do they’ll lose votes

@hogmanayhoolie Do you think independence will be a big factor in voting? Not sure how much support it has in Scotland.

hogmanayhoolie · 01/02/2024 13:14

For what it's worth our choice is really between Tory and SNP

While this subject is all consuming for some posters, in real life it's a low priority for headspace

I think the stance taken by our first minister who has in laws in Gaza has turned a lot of people OFF the SNP

So it will be interesting to see how that is reflected in election results

BackandForthRoundandRound · 01/02/2024 13:04

Starmer has never looked like a particularly strong leader to me...

Starmer's stance on this has definitely made me less likely to vote for him, but then his stance on this is in-line with a certain lilly livered approach on so many other issues. I fear he's rather crippled himself/tied himself in knots after his relentless purging/demonising of so many decent labour members. For all I know the poor sod has tortured dreams about purging himself.
So though a natural labour voter i may have to vote Green. It definitely won't be Tory.

He hasn't purged decent members - such hyperbole. The disciplinary procedure is independent of the leader but the leadership set the course that antisemites were no longer welcome, nor were people who were activists against thd party. And good riddance

Presumably because losing the backing of any defined group is detrimental to a campaign

https://amp.theguardian.com/politics/2024/jan/30/trust-is-lost-muslim-voters-unhappy-with-labour-stance-on-gaza-war

An opinion poll carried out in November by Savanta found strong support for Labour among Muslim voters, with 64% backing the party. But more than 40% said Keir Starmer's response to the war had made them less likely to vote Labour, while 20% said it had made them more likely to do so

Party’s position has shifted with Keir Starmer now calling for a ‘sustainable ceasefire’ but for some voters it is too little too late

In my opinion and experience the majority of people tend to vote on issues that directly affect them and for the party that they feel will directly benefit them. They also tend to vote on local issues more than national. I am not sure the stance a party takes on an international conflict in the middle east will change how people vote to have any significant impact on general election results

TomeTome · 01/02/2024 10:56

EasterIssland · 01/02/2024 10:44

Then why the news about labour being worried about starmer losing the vote ?

ConnieCounter · 01/02/2024 10:48

I can't even imagine what it's like for UK voters at the moment. I'm in Ireland where every political party agrees that what's happening in Gaza is indefensible and they are all openly criticizing Israel. Most public opinion goes further in favour of the Palestinians and for example people are very cross that politicians are going to America for St Patrick's Day to meet Genocide Joe.

Because everyone's on the same page here it isn't really an election issue. I can't imagine trying to figure out how to vote in the UK or US where everyone's on the same page in favour of Genocide. Brutal.

Is your MP the representative for Gaza?

what a stupid question. Seems like it As they’re the ones that have decided to stop sending aid to Gaza. Also are the ones deciding not to stop providing weapons

I doubt many Muslims will vote Labour now. They may pick up votes elsewhere though.

pasteloblong · 01/02/2024 09:53

I wrote to my Labour MP regarding the killing of Gazan citizens by the Israeli government and didn't even receive a reply.

What genocide?
The only party promising genocide is Hamas.

Israel denies vociferously but their actions say differently.

Don’t forget younger people - who are active on platforms like TikTok. They may be less likely to vote. This issue is all over TikTok- I am told.

Quite possibly!

I'm not really into social media much - proud owner of "abandoned Facebook account, which I only keep because I message people on there", a LinkedIn, and a Twitter both for "professional reasons, I post how supposedly excited I am about how my employer and I are going to leverage AI and the Cloud to revolutionise ... [insert: total bullshit; stuff you say because it's good for business - also: I could not be less excited. This is my job!] ...".

But, yes, I do realise that social media lean "more radical" than the BBC & Co.

AdamRyan · 31/01/2024 22:38

Ugh its such a mess.
He is in a difficult position because he's only just started to shake off the "Labour are antisemitic" issues, so will be really concerned about reopening that can of worms.
I wish a party would come along that was more critical of the Israeli government but I can't see it happening Sad

Userxyd · 31/01/2024 22:36

It's really the least worst option. I used to be Labour/lib Dem in those heady days when economic/social justice was top of our priorities. Now we have girls and women's safety and rights, wars, Europe, China etc etc to worry about.
Sadly I think it's Tory for me which is really through gritted teeth but the most fundamental risk for us is my family's safety.

Starmer ought to be worried about all sorts of demographics - including people like myself: white, atheist, high-earner (though born working class), corporate executive for a living. The sort of person who would, technically, probably stand to personally benefit from Tory economic policies, but has been a long-standing Labour voter on the grounds that I value economic justice over my immediate personal gain.

I would never vote for that man now!

And this is not even a "Palestine only" issue: what Starmer has done to Labour on economic issues makes Blair look like bloody Karl Marx himself!

By framing Palestine as a "Muslim" issue, and by generally being oblivious to a number of issues, he is simply showing how utterly out of touch he is.

I mean, with all due respect: I would never vote for the Torys - but voting for Labour under Starmer is "basically the same thing - except you also need to lie to yourself about what you are endorsing".

This is, regrettably, going to be a "Greens, if they manage to come up with something I can get behind beyond climate, or spoiled ballot" for me!

Don’t forget younger people - who are active on platforms like TikTok. They may be less likely to vote. This issue is all over TikTok- I am told.

Im so fucking pissed off at all of our politicians stance and behaviour about the Middle East. Not only are they quite comfortable with a genocide, but are also engaging in war mongering and escalation. Not in my bloody name 😡

However at the next election the most important thing for our Country is to get the Tories out. For me personally I have to vote Lib Dem to get our local Tory twat out - tactical voting.

I can understand that, if you live within a "marginal seat" constituency ... seeing as mine is a "less likely to turn away from anything other than Tory than me being made Queen by the way of public acclaim" seat, I might as well spoil my ballot or vote for Dolly the clone sheep !

I would never not vote at all - but I am really a) never getting anything else than "whomever the Tories decide to run", and I will sure as hell not waste a protest vote on "okay, lemme go with basically also the Tories, but they use another colour scheme"!

stormy4319trevor · 31/01/2024 21:05

@SharonEllis Well, if he and probably some others in his party, are OK with starving children in Gaza, I don't believe they will give a monkey's about the hungry children in the UK either. I wish I believed they care. I've seen nothing from them to show they will do anything to help the poor in this country. Starmer believes the struggles of the working class are limited to wanting a holiday each year or running a car. Honestly, I don't think he realises the amount of people who rely on food banks or are homeless.
