From the Guardian 5 hours ago;

"UK suspends UNRWA support after Israeli allegations The UK has temporarily paused future funding of UNRWA, saying it is “appalled by allegations that UNRWA staff were involved in the 7 October attack against Israel”.
A statement sent to the Guardian by the UK’s foreign, commonwealth and development office said:
'The UK is appalled by allegations that UNRWA staff were involved in the 7 October attack against Israel, a heinous act of terrorism that the UK government has repeatedly condemned.

The UK is temporarily pausing any future funding of UNRWA whilst we review these concerning allegations.'

We remain committed to getting humanitarian aid to the people in Gaza who desperately need it."

This is down to Hamas and not Israel.

We all know that Hamas repurposes some goods coming in to Gaza to make weapons, so Israel has a right to check what's coming in.
They have also been smuggling in arms for years.

https://www.fdd.org/analysis/2024/01/23/egypt-claims-it-destroyed-hamas-tunnels-but-smuggling-continues/

Israel has a right to defend itself, and the International community agree with that.

Unfortunately it is civilians who suffer.

This is an attempt to justify aid being prevented from reaching the Palestinian population. Posting this as though it is factual is really quite terrible.

Israel is an illegal occupier. It does not have a right to self defence under international law.

I saw it on television and radio at the time.

Here's Barry Andrews MEP filming from Rafah and quoting the "one truck an hour" line that you were querying. There's more information on his social media and probably if you google it.

Egypt Claims It Destroyed Hamas Tunnels, But Smuggling Continues

Israeli claims that terrorists are using cross-border tunnels between Egypt and Gaza to smuggle weapons into the strip are “baseless,” an Egyptian official said on January 23....

I have met this MEP ,Barry Andrews , in the context of overseas humanitarian work and my family who are involved in politics think very highly of him, even though from a different party. I would consider him a 100% reliable source

News about Canada sending aid via other organisations, instead of withdrawing it.
I have not spotted news about other countries doing the same, but I have not been following.
I have heard from other sources, including some mentions in the newspapers that the movement of lorries and aid was not fluid enough due to IDF slow checks and acceptance of the loads. That was prior to the UNRWA dismissing some of their employees.

It also really does not make that much of a difference. No other organisation has the level of infrastructure and workforce on the ground that would be required to pull off the level of aid operation required.

Not that UNRWA really does anymore either - their facilities have been flattened, too, and more than 100 of their staff have been killed. But they do have by far the most of what is even still left!

If you have never worked in the humanitarian space: stuff like this is nowhere near as easy as "getting a few bags of flour in and dumping it right across the border". Having worked (albeit as an unpaid volunteer) in emergency relief, you need warehousing facilities, some sort of a system to prioritise recipients, security to make sure the guy who punches the hardest does not end up getting it all, etc, etc, etc.

PeasfullPerson · 30/01/2024 17:47

I was just about to post this. I hope that other countries make an announcement about what they plan to do, so that UNRWA and any other organisations can get themselves organised.

Canada will send another $40M in aid for Gaza after pausing funding to UNRWA

Canada suspended funding to UNRWA in response to allegations that its staff played a role in the Hamas attack in Israel on Oct. 7.

All that shows is that UN doesn't vet it's staff properly - you can't blame Israel for that.

It seems like Israel can’t be blamed for anything doesn’t it ? Not Extra judicial assassinations, or forced starvation, or forced displacement, or the genocidal rhetoric from its government, or the communications blackouts, electricity blackouts, or killing journalists, or the refusal to allow in international journalists, or killing doctors, killing children, killing paramedics, killing men, killing women, bombing hospitals.

"aid arriving in Egypt does not go straight to Gaza. It has to go to Israel, get checked and then if allowed it goes and joins the queue at Rafah."

No argument about that.

No-one is 'blocking aid' as another poster claimed. @Lanabigbanana

They don't announce that they're blocking aid obviously. They're up on genocide charges in the Hague, they're not total idiots. They check every single item on every truck and if anything considered dual use, as much as a tent pole for a tent to house the millions of families displaced and made homeless by Israel is found the entire lorry has to travel back over an hour to have the offending item removed and the truck checked then they come back another time and try again. Israel is finding lots of minor reasons to stop the trucks from going through. One an hour went through in the time that a European Parliamentary group went to observe it last month. They were horrified and disturbed.

Since Israel presented its case at the tribunal, Egyptian and Arab media have repeatedly quoted the Israeli defence team's lawyer, Christopher Staker, who stated on Friday that "access to the Gaza Strip from Egypt is under Eqyptian control, and Israel is not legally obligated to allow access to Gaza from its territory."
London-based Arabic-language newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat spoke with Raha Ahmad Hassan, a former aide to the Egyptian foreign minister, who said, "Egypt can provide international endorsements from all the senior officials who visited the Rafah crossing, to confirm that it was never closed to humanitarian aid. These, along with a legal memorandum with photos and evidence, will be submitted to the International Court."

What does aid going to the Rafah border prove? Absolutely nothing. Not sure why you posted that link to be honest.

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 30/01/2024 15:02

@Lanabigbanana aid arriving in Egypt does not go straight to Gaza. It has to go to Israel, get checked and then if allowed it goes and joins the queue at Rafah.

100 lorries a day are required to sustain life. So far an average of 88 a day have been getting through. Hence aid being included in the preliminary measures.

You can see a basic update here https://www.ochaopt.org/content/hostilities-gaza-strip-and-israel-reported-impact-day-114

UNWRA also provided health care.

Most countries have food, education and health care in prisons. Which countries were you thinking of @hogmanayhoolie that don't have these things?

Oh. Not bad at all for "an open air prison"

I'm sorry youve lost me. Are you implying that there is something about having food and an education provided by charity that makes the Israeli blockade implausible? I believe prisoners in most countries have access to food and education too.

hogmanayhoolie · 30/01/2024 14:03

All that aid previously. What exactly were UNRWA doing with my tax funded aid all these years?

Plus the extra our first minister sent. Where did that go?

Well they educated(well did when there were schools) almost 300,000 children and do a very good job of it given the extremely high literacy rate in Gaza. 42% of the children that they educate were in need of psychological support due to Israeli violence, they tried to offer a safe space and access to psychosocial intervention for these traumatised children where they could flourish. They also used to feed over 1million people due to food insecurity caused by Israels blockade, I'm sure you know about the flour they would deliver to over 50 bakeries in Gaza, that was in the news when Israel was systematically destroying all of them.

Those are 2 things, there are many, many others. The idea that UNWRA have been sitting around twiddling their thumbs for years isnt true. Israel have attacked pretty much every aid agency in Gaza in an attempt to prevent aid from reaching the people who need it, this is all part of their plan as the Israeli defence minister ordered a complete siege on the Gaza Strip, there will be no electricity, no food, no fuel, everything is closed. This is Israel sticking to their word and making sure they have no food by any means necessary.
