"Yemen, Yemen make us proud, turn another ship around!" was being chanted on the streets of London yesterday and last week.

I'm just interested in whether people think this is a reasonable thing to be chanting or not, because there were quite a few people chanting it. So a quick poll:

I don’t think anyone is disputing that they’ve fired on non-Israeli ships

They did, have you read the thread?

Once you have committed to carrying out an act of terror to convince the international community to put pressure on Israel to agree to a ceasefire, obviously you attack international shipping.

Or, and hear me out, if your intention is to stir up anti-western shit because your flag says DEATH TO AMERICA, obviously you attack international shipping.

But you accept that the Houthis have attacked ships that have nothing to do with Israel or the conflict, don’t you?

How does that fit with your opinion?

And how does Iran’s funding and direction of the Houthis fit with your opinion?

I don’t think anyone is disputing that they’ve fired on non-Israeli ships, or that they are funded by Iran.

Once you have committed to carrying out an act of terror to convince the international community to put pressure on Israel to agree to a ceasefire, obviously you attack international shipping. Just attacking Israeli shipping wouldn’t work, Israel isn’t going to back down. You disrupt the entire shipppng lane, and that causes enough economic disruption that other countries pressure Israel.

I do not support that action, but the rationale makes perfect sense. Sinking the odd Israeli vessel would have been completely ignored, whereas disrupting international shipping has everyone sitting up and taking notice. Again, I am not in favour of it, but in terms of achieving their goals, it is obvious why they are attacking non-Israeli ships.

It must also be inconvenient to the Houthi flag wavers that the Houthi flag has DEATH TO ISRAEL and A CURSE UPON JEWS plastered on it.

I don't think the ones singing the song and banging the Houthis are 'good guys drum' have really thought it through.

It feels like a social media bandwagon reaction rather than actually looking at who the Houthis are, what they have done to their own people and taking hostages from captured ships, and what they stand for. Perhaps just lacking knowledge? Israel hating? Hating the west? A combination of all maybe 🤔

noblegiraffe · 24/01/2024 11:11

Here's the Houthi flag. The bit about DEATH TO ISRAEL and A CURSE UPON JEWS is helpfully in red. The red bit also says DEATH TO AMERICA.

Any comment, @inkworks273 ?

Inconvenient to the Houthis flag wavers to post about taking hostages from various nationalities and to others posting about the Houthis slaughtering and starving their own people. The houthis flag wavers don't worry about the truth it appears. 🤔

@inkworks273 I'm struggling to follow your logic here, sorry

Are you saying that this "genocide" started on 7 October.

That doesn't fit with the usual "free free Palestine" rhetoric

A sudden onset of a genocide. Ok

Unfortunately you can’t put it as a characteristic of US (or UK) foreign policy either.

We can’t destabilise these countries and then tut tut that they are unstable.

That does not in any way mean that I support attacks on shipping, or other terrorism. But I do think the OP is being quite disingenuous by painting this as an inexplicable act of mindless terrorism rather than just the latest development in a violent, unstable area.

Can you point out the post where I 'disingenuously' paint these attacks as an 'inexplicable act of mindless terrorism' please?

In your opinion. It started after the genocide and also stopped when there was a temporary ceasefire.

The Houthis have attacked Red Sea shipping before October 7th.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/12/14/iran-warns-us-of-problems-in-response-to-red-sea-task-force-plans

"Yet, Houthis have a history of attacking ships in the Red Sea. In January 2017, during their conflict with a Saudi-led coalition, they attacked the frigate Al Madinah using three remote-controlled unmanned explosive boats, forcing the Royal Saudi Navy to withdraw from Yemeni waters.
Encouraged by their success, in May and July 2018, they attacked two huge Saudi oil tankers with Iranian-built cruise missiles, similar to those used in recent attacks. Neutral-flagged ships were also attacked in the same period."

The ceasefire was from 24th to 30th November 2023.

Here's an article saying that a Houthi drone was launched in an attack on 29th November https://apnews.com/article/us-iran-houthi-drone-yemen-daf0427ba836799ba29479050b866f90

And you also previously said that the Houthis were only targeting ships headed for Israel.

Where are you getting your misinformation from, and do you think you should possibly rethink this?

Which genocide are you talking about?

The genocide Israel is perpetrating against the Palestinians.

@XRAYTHIS I do not support the Houthis. I find it a sad day when Yemen is one of very few countries doing anything at all to stop Israel's genocide against the Palestinians.

I can agree that the Houthis have done terrible things while also agreeing that the Israeli government and the IDF are no better than them.

You don't support the houthis, you just keep repeatedly praising the actions of the houthis.

These are the civilian hostages I'm concerned about. I can't seem to find any more up-to-date information about them.

Hostages who, by the way, weren't released during the temporary ceasefire.

Nope. I can't get your argument at all

Why did you switch Houthi for Yemen when it is the Houthis who are attacking international shipping? Is it because you do actually support the Houthi attacks on international shipping but you're now aware that this is glorifying terrorism so you're trying to disguise it?

This.

Yeman isn't attacking ships. It's civilians are starving.

Its the Houthis who caused their own peoples starvation which the west is attempting to help combat by sending in aid ships.

No, it was discussed but decided against as it would restrict severely needed aid to Yemen (guess why Yemen needs aid?).

However the government have now said that support for the Houthi attacks is glorifying terrorism and there will be zero tolerance of this, so you really ought to start rethinking your approach.

Have you looked up the Houthi slogan and seen what they think of the Jews yet?

Indeed the west that so many hates is sending aid to Yeman to feed the people left starving due to the war and destruction of Yeman by those 'lovely helpful ' Houthis. It would be funny if not so tragic for Yeman.

The Houthis are not targeting shipping because of the conflict in Israel and Gaza. The conflict is their cover for indiscriminate piracy and violence.

In your opinion. It started after the genocide and also stopped when there was a temporary ceasefire.

Humdingerydoo · 24/01/2024 10:43

The Houthis are very much a case of your enemies enemies not being your friends. You don't want friends like those, unless you are someone who values a Palestinian life over a Yemeni one? Which I suppose it's possible you do, but I'd hope not.
