"Yemen, Yemen make us proud, turn another ship around!" was being chanted on the streets of London yesterday and last week.

I'm just interested in whether people think this is a reasonable thing to be chanting or not, because there were quite a few people chanting it. So a quick poll:

“terrorism is not the problem, rather the systems they oppose are terrorist”

Think we have all seen signs on marches or posts on social media or people with megaphones saying something along these lines. However rather that saying the system they say Israel/American government/Britain government etc

Tuesday Times contained a thought provoking piece by Melanie Phillips examining how our civil service has been infected by postmodern identity politics to the point that some civil servants believe it is problematic to label an organisation “terrorist” because it implies a moral judgement. They attend a course at King's College (had a four year £26M teaching contract with Qatar) which included slides stating, “condemning terrorism is to endorse the power of the strong over the weak” and “terrorism is not the problem, rather the systems they oppose are terrorist”. We have civil servants working in government who “hate the concept of the state” and believe Hamas’s atrocities should be “contextualised”.

That is quite something isn't it

The strange thing is none of that comes as a complete surprise to me. It seems to just make some of the fuckwittery we have seen and heard. A bit like oh that is where they're getting some of this from.

We live in a country where institutionalised dogma is helping forces hostile to the West.

Not when we are disagreeing she isn't 😀

One of the best people on here to disagree with

I may start posting in support of the Houthis just for the fun of a good argument with Giraffe 😁

@Trulywonderful that made me chuckle...

It was way more funny and outrageous originally but I edited it because they would have probably deleted the post

And on that note: Piers Corbyn (brother of Jeremy) is here claiming that the October 7th massacre was organised by the Israeli government and committed by the IDF who made it look like Hamas did it.

This was a false flag operation to justify their invasion of Gaza.

Because Hamas are the predetermined good guys therefore they wouldn't do massacres like that.

As Heidi B says in her tweet, the ‘pro-Palestinian’ campaign is swimming in loathsome antisemitic conspiracy theory. Once one adds in campaigners’ credulous belief in everything said by Hamas, the bone-headed nastiness is complete. The shade of Julius Streicher is smiling.

Anyone else wish that mother Cobyn had chosen to remain childless?

stomachameleon · 17/01/2024 22:19

@noblegiraffe I don't know how anyone can say things like that. He is the most belligerent liar and waste of space.

Of course slavery is now fine that the predetermined 'good guys' are doing it.

Everything bad the Houthis have done will now be up for justification. Or denial.

UK - freedom of speech easily taken for granted, not only speech but many things taken for granted! So unfortunate 😑

Can any British/Eu common man/woman chant such slogans, be it any slogans ... in Dubai/Saudi./Kuwait/Tehran.. just think !!! Nearly Impossible.

Example : Dubai does not even have the system of settlement/PR status or any such for outsiders to settle permanently! As long as one has work, he or she can live and earn. No job, no money they will cancel your Visa.
Very strong rules and they don't welcome asylums in spite of the same community/religion, still they don't allow.
I think these slogan chanters should move to Middle east , it might help Yemen and other controversial countries where fighting is forever.

Sorry, no offense its just my opinion 🙏

noblegiraffe · 17/01/2024 21:30

This video of a guy being asked what a socialist intifada means certainly raises the hope that the people chanting support for the Houthis don't actually know anything about the Houthis.

Vandalising ATM cash machines ,chanting slogan will not fix the problem. Whoever supports chanting slogans/vandalising - sincerely move to Gaza/Yemen do volunteering fix their problems support their brothers and sisters in that situation, that will be the real help. Not shouting slogan on roads ! Please go, there are many flights to Egypt !😊

Speechless at this fuckwittery

We all know how much certain people have recently taken to the word "context".

Anyway, surely a country where slavery is a big issue would be an apartheid state?

I think they decide who the goodies and baddies are first, then have to rationalise that position by e.g. saying what happened in Yemen was the fault of the West, or the Houthis are only attacking Israeli ships or by saying that there’s no evidence Hamas raped anyone on October 7th.

And when you have decided that Israel are the baddies, when you really dig in that’s when you end up denying the Holocaust.

I think it might also have to do with the eternal pull the “bad”boys have over the “good” girl.

noblegiraffe · 17/01/2024 13:53

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 17/01/2024 13:45

I really don’t understand the unconditional support for organisations and movements which are, to put it mildly, not women’s rights friendly and the minimising of sexual violence.

I suspect there is some misdirected romanticism there, but I don’t really want to delve into armchair psychology.
