Catastrophic hunger - 40% of Gaza's population at risk of famine

Being reported by the Guardian:

40% of Gaza’s population is at risk of famine, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency said on Saturday.

“Every day is a struggle for survival, finding food and water,” the UN agency for Palestinian refugees added.

Too sad and completely unnecessary. If only adequate aid, food and water was allowed in.

The US have essentially said their support is now conditional based on whether they see Israel taking certain steps. From amongst these steps one is boosting aid. So clearly there is an issue in allowing in sufficient aid if they are willing to change their policy based on it. Anyone at this point still saying sufficient aid is allowed in is being wilfully blind

stormy4319trevor · 04/04/2024 21:43

Hey @Efacsen Hope you are well. Gate 98, huh? Why have they done that, I wonder. Hopefully it can be opened for aid deliveries.

Parkingt111 · 04/04/2024 21:40

From the times of Israel

Kirby goes further with the threat, telling reporters that if Israel fails to boost aid and reduce violence against civilians in Gaza, “there will have to be changes from our side.”

Parkingt111 · 04/04/2024 21:38

I have just also see that Biden has said the US policy in regards to Israel's war with Gaza will be dependant going forward on the steps Israel takes to address the humanitarian situation in Gaza which he called unacceptable.

Just listened to Unicef Officer on C4. She did say that having to traverse a war zone from South to North is making things harder. Famine is worse in the North, and it would be really helpful to open a crossing(s) in the North, she advised, so help can be brought directly to the people without having to risk lives driving the aid there. Might be something Israel could do.

Hello there @stormy4319trevor there is a nice quiet safe military road parallel to the border fence which since it's in Israel is free from bombs, checkpoints, craters, Hamas marauding gangs etc

IDF trialled it successfully about 7-10 days ago and made a gap in the border fence in northern gaza and called it gate 98 - so it's quite possible if the will is there

Yes that has been requested a few times. The roads are in bits it is extremely difficult to move from south to north. The North has been virtually cut off and they are extremely concerned about civilians there

Parkingt111 · 04/04/2024 21:33

The entire population of Gaza is facing acute levels of food insecurity

Parkingt111 · 04/04/2024 21:32

This is from Blinken just today

Speaking about the humanitarian situation in Gaza, he says: "Despite important steps that Israel has taken to allow assistance into Gaza, the results on the ground are woefully insufficient and unacceptable.
"100% of the population in Gaza knows acute levels of food insecurity.
"100% of the population is in need of humanitarian assistance, and those working heroically to provide that assistance are doing so in great peril to their own lives.

Are you seriously sitting there telling me that Russians have experienced multiple genocides, human rights abuses and millennia of persecution because people said they were "bots".

You're leaning heavily on those "".

As I said, the trope is deeply harmful. And people who refer to Jewish people in these terms are paranoid antisemites.

However, Israel, not Jewish people, Israel, has a massively advanced and sophisticated intelligence machine. And every reference to it, and its workings, isn't antisemitism. Very throw away comment about being paid isn't either.

I've slagged off the CIA on here and Bush senior in particular. I don't hold random Americans, or random people who happen to share religion or culture with Americans responsible for the CIA.

And I know why Jewish people are feeling threatened at the moment. But defending even partially starving women, children and non-combatants isn't a defensible position.

This is very tiring.

I think you know what just happened is that someone said something pretty overtly racist. If I was Black and someone had just used a classic racial trope used to harm Black people over millenia, absolutely nobody would be saying "ackshually this is just like when people accuse others online of being Russian bots so therefore it's fine".

No one is defending partially starving women, children and non-combatants. I think you completely know that too, don't you? I think you're 100% aware (and I think a lot of posters are aware) that I obviously do not want anyone to starve. I have expressed that several times.

What I am very clearly, and very explicitly saying "it is not 100% Israel's fault". An opinion on this forum which seems to elicit wild rage, personal attacks, racist tropes and an afternoon of people making up things I never said.

Cheers and good evening.

Gunmen, from Hamas and other armed clan groups are looting entire trucks full of aid and food for hungry people. And you think the rotters are doing this awful thing because they're hungry?

I give up. I am done. Good luck to you all. This thread is completely mad.

You think all the looting is being done by hamas and there are no desperate civilians who don't have enough to eat just trying to get some?

You think they are waiting in an orderly queue to be handed a bit of extra food or something?

Honestly , you've not seen trucks having to throw food to desperate man, women and children because the IDF won't let the trucks stop?

You think hamas and other armed clan groups are stealing all the food,

Neh, I really don't think you believe that at all

Do you have a link/source that verifies that Hamas has been stealing the aid?

im asking because the last I read was that Israel hasn’t still proven their accusations

and no I’m not denying some are stealing the aid but want to know whether this has been fully confirmed

https://www.timesofisrael.com/us-envoy-israel-hasnt-provided-specific-evidence-hamas-is-stealing-aid-shipments/amp/

I posted earlier in the thread the report from the WFP. They state aid has a high risk of looting. I have seen videos of multiple masked and armed gangs stealing aid. I do not know if they were Hamas or other armed gangs. They are Palestinian people stealing food meant for the hungry, and that's the point regardless of which gang they work for.

Because Russians have not experienced multiple genocides, human rights abuses and millennia of persecution because people said they were "bots".

They have. They've just been internal, rather than external exterminations.

And yes, it's true, the trope of sneaky dodginess is very harmful. And yes, was used by the German propaganda machine to justify genocide. But does that mean that Israel gets to have one of the world's most advanced information systems but no one can ever have a conversation about it? Ever again, regardless of motive?

Are you seriously sitting there telling me that Russians have experienced multiple genocides, human rights abuses and millennia of persecution because people said they were "bots".

You know that is completely not true.

Comparing this to antisemitic tropes used for impetus to brutally murder millions of people is really awful.

Not "famine rations". The ideal intake. It is 38% below the ideal intake. Almost a kilo of food a day isn't "famine rations". I am not even sure "famine rations" is a thing -did you just make it up? Why can't people make a point without the ridiculous twisting of obvious nonsense and silly games? Is this issue a joke to you?

Subjecting a nation to semi-starvation for a prolonged duration is not a joke.

I assume that you still stand by a 38% deficit diet being just fine.

Of course people are looting, there isn't enough food and water getting in I imagine people are bloody desperate . I don't think any country would react any differently after 6 months of what they have gone through

stormy4319trevor · 04/04/2024 20:33

I blame Covid, when there was a surge in people doing their own research and deciding they knew better than the experts. It's a common issue these days. Imposing a siege was always going to create desperation, and people trapped in a war zone, moving from pillar to post, with frequent comms blackouts etc. are not going to be able to maintain law and order. The civilians of Palestine have no way to make Hamas surrender, and Netanyahu has said the return of the hostages will not be sufficient for a ceasefire. There needs to be true safe zones, not areas which are later bombed, and there needs to be protection for aid workers, not killing them. Those things are within the power of Israel, as is allowing the entry of more aid.

LemonyTicket · 04/04/2024 20:32

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/04/2024 20:13

Can you say why? Because Israel has advanced government information services (like Russia and China) in a way Sudan (mentioned by PP) doesn't. The UK and US do too. Pretending advanced nuclear powers don't use misinformation and propaganda is really disingenuous. Of course they do and they are very good at it.

I do understand that antisemitism is a massive issue. But assuming it's ALWAYS malicious, racist commentary when it really isn't, just means people get defensive. And it does seem to be a feature of this conflict that this accusation is used to shut down perfectly reasonable debate. I do sometimes wonder if antisemites sometimes accuse people just to fire the defensive response.

Jews have experienced all those things because of antisemitic hate, which is rooted in the classic idea that Jews are plotting for their own agenda. Typified by accusations of being paid, controlling governments, the media, acting sneakily behind closed doors, spreading disease and so on.

I still can't get past a PP thinking that 38% below famine time rations is just dandy.

Luckily their maths is wrong and the situation is not quite that dire.
