Some of them were journalists who have been released. Who knows who all the others are.

Journalist carries a very murky definition within Gaza these days, even Hamas has gone on record to say that the free press in the statelet is non existence. I doubt they were actual journalists, just people calling themselves journalists. Propagandist shills for Hamas would be more accurate.

I believe there is a lot of lying all around.

Israel knows that their decision to continue is internationally unpopular, so they're putting out a lot of stories, of which a good number can't be verified.

I also notice that on all social media, including Mumsnet, there are endless threads in support of them, trying to drown out any other noise.

You'd be forgiven for thinking, on here, that they are wildly popular, whilst we know that isn't the case. I wonder why?

All of this is just biased supposition and it isn’t actually a popularity contest, what a childish view. It’s clearly visible who on MN thinks this is some sort of game they want to win by drowning out viewpoints they don’t want to hear or want other people to consider.
There are many who don’t see things in quite such simplistically binary terms and out in the real world, nuanced conversations are taking place that go beyond “But Netanyahu! But the IDF! Israel bad!”, so the level of support for Israel is only really surprising to posters who choose to keep themselves wholly ignorant of events and conversations beyond their own reductive echo chamber.

Who knows maybe it's as simple as Biden wants to relocate to Israel with his family after his presidency is over 🤷‍♀️

What are they getting out of this? Enlighten me.

The Balfour declaration 1917 was made by the British foreign minister to Zionists (via a letter to a Rothschild who was part of the Zionist movement) promising a various things, and Balfour's action is widely believed (I think) to have been motivated by the need/desire of Britain to have good international relations with those who supported the creation of a Jewish state. And, basically, I think it would be a fair hypothesis that the same motivations which existed then, exist now. There was confusion and mayhem and chaos about how it was managed right from the start - if there had been consultations and negotiations back in 1915-7 with both the Palestinians and the Zionists and more clarity around the agreements withe Arabs in 1915, this conflict may never have started.

PeasfullPerson · 12/12/2023 17:35

Well that’s disappointing! And interesting considering the research was finished a day after the other poll. Perhaps there will be more research tomorrow which frames the questions in a different way. Not that it would surprise me that much to learn that people do support what is happening, we as a human race have a track record of condoning and taking part in hideous behaviour.

WSJ
The WSJ poll was conducted among 1,500 registered voters from Nov. 29 to Dec. 4. It carries a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.

Pew Research Center
Pew Research Center conducted this study to better understand Americans’ views of the current war between Israel and Hamas. For this analysis, we surveyed 5,203 adults from Nov. 27 to Dec. 3, 2023. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center’s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the ATP’s methodology.

The American Trends Panel

What is the American Trends Panel (ATP)? The ATP is Pew Research Center’s nationally representative online survey panel. The panel is composed of more

More non-combatant Gazans will certainly die as a result of Israel's actions but that's what war is like. The IDF doesn't kill them intentionally.

Like fuck they don’t. The whole aim of Israel and the IDF is to kill as many Palestinians as is possible for them to get away with. May they reap what they have sown.

What on earth are you talking about? You just lie.

IlCocodrillo · 10/12/2023 17:27

@Livelovelaugh028384

You say civilians are not being attacked say that to the men that were stripped and humiliated. Um sorry, it’s not possible to take you seriously with statements like this. These men are Hamas terrorists. The ones that raped, maimed, sexually mutilated, kidnapped murdered and so on innocent Israeli men, women, elderly (including holocaust survivors), toddlers and babies. You can tell a terrier from a civilian, it’s quite easy. The terrorist is the one surrendering his AK-47.

Some of them were journalists who have been released. Who knows who all the others are.

petuniasandpetals · 12/12/2023 12:02

@Boomboom22
Your comment is the one that uses a game of football as an analogy. I would not speak in such crass terms.
In war there are sides. Do you suggest we just let Hamas do whatever they want?
I guess you would like to us all to sit round a table. Unfortunately Hamas don't operate like that.
If you don't know anyone who supports a democratic state fighting for her existence may I kindly suggest you change your social circles.

Boomboom22 · 12/12/2023 08:11

@petuniasandpetals it's not a football game. What a stupid thing to say. I don't know anyone who supports Israel and they definitely don't support hamas. No one supports genocide or terrorism and its ridiculous to frame it in this way in the first place.

SharonEllis · 12/12/2023 07:58

May they reap what they have sown.

And what do you mean by that?

Thank you, that is a very useful resource.

I see one of the Board members is under investigation in relation to Burisma.... the gravy train is on a circular track!

BelleHathor · 11/12/2023 21:31

FOJN Depends on what you mean by good and I share your skepticism.

The Atlantic Council is a typical think tank aka a front for selling influence and access to politicians and pushing policies that benefit their benefactors.
They're extremely connected and good at it. Our government even donates.

Some of their scandals listed here: https://www.influencewatch.org/non-profit/atlantic-council/

The US is certainly taking a step closer to being implicated in Israel's war crimes

Do you not think @Leah5678 that it might be that, given how few 'rich and powerful'Jews there are, numerically, as I think you concede, that it's more a case of the interests of some of them (again, I suggest they dont all think the same way)aligning with US foreign policy objectives than actually driving them? Or do you see a parallel with Americans of other heritage driving US foreign policy? Rupert Murdoch is very powerful, has he advanced Australian geopolitical objectives in US foreign policy? Nigerians are among the most successful immigrants in recent times - I wonder how they are shaping US foreign policy? It's an interesting question given how Americans come from pretty much every nation in the world - who has the most influence? Or are they actually all broadly interested most in America's Strategic role?

You're correct, and most Americans who are a generation or more away from their immigrant roots are fairly ambivalent about US policy towards their ancestral homelands. People with Italian ancestry don't take a special interest in US-Italian relations, etc. We consider ourselves Americans above all. Where Grandma and Grandpa grew up is an interesting bit of family history, but not especially relevant politically.

FOJN · 11/12/2023 19:28

BelleHathor It seemed like a pretty comprehensive summary of the discussions I've listened to about this issue.

I'm generally pretty sceptical about think tanks because it can be difficult to find out exactly who funds them but hopefully the Atlantic Council are reasonably decent.

BelleHathor · 11/12/2023 17:41

FOJN · 11/12/2023 13:47

I just wanted to add another link to your post....

To argue that Gaza isn't occupied simply because there is not a military presence inside the wall is just semantics. It's been discussed and debated for years and the general consensus is that the level of control Israel exerts over almost every aspect of life in Gaza amounts to an occupation.

https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/menasource/gaza-israel-occupied-international-law/

Thanks! @FOJN thats a very comprehensive exploration of the issue. Hopefully this will eventually be argued in court and any perpetrators held accountable.

What's even more interesting is that it was published by the Atlantic Council. They're a very powerful Lobbying group often read by politicians around the World but especially in Washington. That they've published this indicates that they're trying to communicate to Congress that they could be in legal hot water and maybe it's time to look for an off ramp.

The Atlantic Council is aware that appearing to stand by while International law is breached will diminish America's influence and standing in the International community and damage it's interests in the long term.

Molymoly · 11/12/2023 17:39

Where did I say I don't support Israel? I was replying to the poster who said if people don't support Israel they must support Hamas.
You can support Israel but at the same time not agree with what they are doing, that doesn't mean you support Hamas.

FPNFL · 11/12/2023 17:28

petuniasandpetals · 11/12/2023 17:26

@Molymoly
I don't know enough about military tactics to know whether Israel is doing all it can to protect the human shields but I do know I don't support terrorists who invade, rape, mutilate, take hostages, kill civilians and take pride and joy in atrocities.

So you don’t support israel then?
