Why Can't Gazans Leave?

There is probably a very simple answer to this that I missed in early news reports.

It's so awful watching News Feeds that essentially seem to say that Gazans are having to move around in a cat and mouse game with the IDF to avoid bombs but have nowhere left to go.

I am very aware that war has casualties and other countries are at war. I am not necessarily saying that IDF should stop fighting.

But this war is different in that all civilians seem to be trapped. Normally war creates refugees. Ukrainians, Afghans, Syrians - they were able to get out. Not all, I know, but movement was an option and it kept civilian casualties down. Why can't Gazans leave Gaza?

As an Israeli general queried, paraphrasing, if Hamas were launching hundreds of missiles a day at London, would everyone say to do nothing? Israel has shown restraint for a very long time against plenty of provocation, but, 7 October was a horror too evil to bear and required a response by any scale of decency which is why Hamas escalated things, they wanted this and they are responsible for forcing the Palestinian people to suffer for them as Hamas planned. This is the very definition of evil - committing horrible acts and then condemning those who are forced to respond to stop the evil. It is horrible for the Israelis and it is horrible for the Palestinians but lay the blame squarely on those who demand it - Hamas who have said they will be doing it again as soon as possible. You cannot argue with evil, it must be rooted out and the process is horrible and costly - look at the war with ISIS who said the same as Hamas, this is what we want and we will be doing it again and again until we have completed the planned genocide - Hamas against Israel and ISIS against all who weren't their kind of Muslim. I really despair that people can't see the reality.

You're right and this is a great post.

People are either deluded or being disingenuous if they believe the UK wouldn't hunt down the culprits after such a vicious attack on innocent civilians. Especially when many are STILL held hostage (Being raped, starved and tortured - if they're lucky, killed and put out of their misery).

It's that simple.

Whatamidoinhere · 06/12/2023 16:46

@SOBplus Wow.
NOBODY condones what happened on the 7th of October. But according to you it makes it okay to murder 7000 children? The 16000 civilians? The war crimes? The bombing of hospitals, churches, mosques, UN schools? The aid trucks waiting in Egypt but prevented to enter by Israel (because there're agreements post the israel-Egypt war)? The use white Phosphorus in densely populated areas? What about the land grab?

The truth is blinding and anyone with a conscience can't deny it. Israel cannot save its image now even if it tried.

I despair at people who can't see reality too. Israel kills, detains, tortures, harasses, humiliates and steals from Palestinians all of the time, that's not the definition of evil though is it? Imagine thinking that that isn't provocation. Imagine thinking so little of Palestinians that you completely gloss over their pain and suffering at the hands of Israelis for decades, just pretend that none of it has ever happened. Do you understand that Palestinians are people too? That they hurt when their children are murdered by Israel? That they suffer when their homes and land are stolen from them? That they weep just like you would when their children are stolen from their beds and night, taken away to be tortured and detained for as long as Israel likes?

The point shouldn't be why isn't X country taking them in? We should be asking why the hell aren't Israel allowing them to live in peace in their own country.

Paul2023 · 05/12/2023 22:48

Numbers I think. Ukraine citizens had to have a passport and were spread around much of Europe, many in neighbouring Poland. Also many want to return home.
No one country is going to be willing to take in millions of Palestinian children.

Theres been two wars and millions of refugees in just two years , what if more wars happen ? No country can sustain millions of refugees, no matter how heart breaking this is.

Edited

The exact same thing was said about Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi persecution. Good old Daily Mail.Same old shit.

It just makes me imagine WB 2. Awful as life might be in Gaza, I suppose they didn't have to deal with settler attacks and night raids on their homes to remove their children. If it becomes an occupation they will. I hope the US and others will be firm in rejecting this. It's no solution at all.

The Palestinians are stuck between a rock and a hard place wherever they are. The world is coming to terms with the reality that Israel has been making strategic, concerted efforts to prevent them from self determining. They've talked about a two state solution, but refused every option. The reality is that that is geographically impossible, and it was on purpose. The only way forward now is a one state, equality for all solution.

@WobbliHead3000 yes
Netanyahu has again said today that after the war the IDF will have security control over Gaza and they will not accept a third party

Even sky news have said that this alludes towards a form of occupation

@Whatamidoinhere but you said you had seen it. Am keen to learn. Where?

A few weeks ago on the news I saw a man hold up his dead baby. It had no head, one leg was missing and both hands were gone too. The remaining body was charred. I believe it is the effect of certain types of bombing.

twilightmoon3 · 06/12/2023 10:04

Parkingt111 · 06/12/2023 07:41

@stomachameleon this is the aftermath of an airstrike in a residential area yesterday.
There's no beheaded babies but still very graphic
If you do want to honestly see what the results of an airstrike looks like in a civilian area this is it.

And ofcourse it goes without saying that there is a trigger warning. I'm not saying you should see it but I only put up because you wanted to know more. It also gives some insight into why so many people globally are horrified by what they are seeing on a daily basis

That's the single most shocking thing I've ever seen and I sort of wished I hadn't. That said if you support war then you must support this "for the greater good" or whatever. No wonder so many ex-service people have major PTSD disorders but at least that ought to be soldier killing soldiers. This, in the same way as the atrocities on October 7th is wholesale slaughter with huge high explosive ordnance used in the most densely populated place on earth.

If you pull back and see the bigger picture what with climate change, and the growing clouds of global war humanity will be seen as the last terrible cancerous growth of random evolution that ultimately destroyed itself. And God can go back to the drawing boatd.

Efacsen · 06/12/2023 09:05

Online this morning are photos of newly internally displaced people who have evacuated from Khan Younis in their thousands yesterday - some of the tents are almost right up against the border wall with Egypt [unless there's another big wall in Rafah]

Must say it's not as tall as I expected and my understanding was that there was a 100m exclusion zone in front of the border wall which seems to have disappeared

So nowhere now for people to evacuate further south unless it's over the border into Egypt

What kind of injuries do you think children suffer when bombs are dropped on their apartment blocks while they sleep?

WobbliHead3000 · 06/12/2023 00:41

The short answer is because Israel won’t allow Palestinians the right to return. So if they leave, they can never be entitled to their lands.
it’s an obvious land grab. The IDF are targeting infrastructure, farmland, etc to ensure no Palestinians will be able to rebuild with the limited resources they have. Netenyahu has already moved in on Gaza City and it won’t be long until the settlements return.

it’s so transparent, it’s sick.

OuiOuiKitty · 06/12/2023 00:26

stomachameleon · 06/12/2023 00:02

@Whatamidoinhere what are you watching to see babies decapitated?

This is what happens when you blow people up. Unfortunately I think most people who have been following Palestinian journalists have seen babies burned to death, seen them with their extremities blown off some of them still alive but missing multiple limbs, some of the saddest are the unborn babies that don't make it out of their dead mothers alive. Unfortunately children seem to be at the front line of adult aggression. It's incredibly sad to think that more than 1 in every 200 children in Gaza never got the chance to the grow up.

Whatamidoinhere · 06/12/2023 00:18

@stomachameleon I'll leave this here and I'm not going to argue anymore. No baby deserves this ever. No parent deserves to have their babies life stolen from them.

Whatamidoinhere · 06/12/2023 00:13

And that is exactly the reason why Israel is targeting journalists wearing a press vest! So many of them were killed and are actively getting threats that their families will be wiped out.

Whatamidoinhere · 06/12/2023 00:12

Gaza journalists social media. They're living the genocide and documenting it. If you're interested I can mention a few names.

@Whatamidoinhere what are you watching to see babies decapitated?

Whatamidoinhere · 05/12/2023 23:33

@tescocreditcard powerful? I think Israel is creating its own grave. Getting rid of Hamas by killing babies really and innocent civilians? Israel may have bombed the shit out of Gaza, but one thing is different this time, their atrocities are exposed to the whole world and people aren't having propaganda for breakfast like they used to. I'm sick to my stomach seeing poor babies decapitated because Israel has a reason to justify it.
They can get rid of Hamas now, but the way they did it and the suffering they caused will create many Hamas organisations in the future.

RedToothBrush · 05/12/2023 23:15

paladium · 05/12/2023 22:40

@RedToothBrush why does Israel have a say in who crosses the Egypt / Palestine border?

I believe the current arrangements are a legacy of various things: the settlement after the Egyptian Israeli war and subsequent attempts at peace between Palestine/Israel.

The key point is that as such the Palestinians have a limited right to self governance but Palestine isn't recognised as a state. And since it's not a State in its own right it technically doesn't have an international border. Because it can't have one.

At the same time Israel retains certain obligations and powers. It can't do certain things within the West Bank and Gaza because of the notion of this limited right to self governance but it has some power. And the border with Egyptian is bound up with the settlement after the war.

Thus Egypt has to comply with certain terms regarding the Sinai peninsula being demilitarised, Israel has a stake because of the history but Palestine also has some limited self governance too.

This also raises problems if a big refugee camp were to spring up on the Egyptian side of the border, in practice Egypt can't police it without agreement from Israel even though it's their land because of the demilitarised zone. Israel has the right to raise objection.

I apologise if I haven't quite got this right - I think my lack of understanding highlight says a lot. And it's best as a 'messy' situation which doesn't help anyone understand the entire issue of the instability in the area.

Israel and Gaza agreeing anything isn't straightforward. They managed, just about , to free some of hostages with negotiations but not all.

Paul2023 · 05/12/2023 22:59

Was thinking more of troops on the ground ?

The IDF has around 170k full time troops. 300k reservists have joined the fight since October 7th. There are another 200k reservists that could be called back to fight.

the Gaza Strip has a population of two million.

Israel have more than 30% of the total number of Gaza Strup citizens in its defence force.

they do not need military help.
