Why Can't Gazans Leave?

There is probably a very simple answer to this that I missed in early news reports.

It's so awful watching News Feeds that essentially seem to say that Gazans are having to move around in a cat and mouse game with the IDF to avoid bombs but have nowhere left to go.

I am very aware that war has casualties and other countries are at war. I am not necessarily saying that IDF should stop fighting.

But this war is different in that all civilians seem to be trapped. Normally war creates refugees. Ukrainians, Afghans, Syrians - they were able to get out. Not all, I know, but movement was an option and it kept civilian casualties down. Why can't Gazans leave Gaza?

it is also evident that the US is increasingly uncomfortable with rising civilian casualties, and is looking for Israel to conclude its military action before Christmas.
But when will Israel have achieved its military objectives and what are Israel's metrics of success?
Israel claims to have killed 5,000 Hamas fighters so far in the two months of fighting to date.
However, Hamas is reported to have started the conflict with 25,000 fighters, so extrapolating progress to date, that would imply that Israel will need another eight months to complete their military objectives.
Meanwhile, 60% of the buildings in Gaza have now sustained some form of war damage as the IDF continues to target Hamas infrastructure

The US want it over by the end of the year and Israel wants to continue for longer which is causing a strain between the two countries

I did read that Israel would like to carry on until the end of January, while the US is happy to for them to carry on until the end of the month. Not sure where I read that, or if any one else saw it? If it's the case I suppose they will have modelled projected deaths and come up with a number they feel happy about. God knows what that is.

It's a hopeless situation at this point for 2 million people trapped in Gaza. What can be done now that Israel's bombardment isn't stopping and the aid isn't getting in? It's heartbreaking really.

If PP are wondering why journalists can get to Al Mawasi but food aid deliveries can't - UN workers are having difficulty getting into work and roads too dangerous/ damaged because of the bombardment, shortage of lorries, food aid being looted by starving civilians and convoys being stoned as UN is being blamed

UN says that their ability to continue to provide humanitarian aid is compromised in so many ways

No/not enough proper UN tents just make-shift shelters made of plastic sheeting and whole families sleeping outdoors/on the street

It keeps raining overnight - even though temp is 10-12 deg at night hypothermia occurs sooner because of loss of body fat and insufficient calories

The suffering of these people is not due to a natural disaster it's entirely man-made and even purposeful

I've got covid at the moment, feel like shit and am laid up with a fever, I've spent the past 24hrs in my cosy bed with dh bringing me meds and drinks. I can't even imagine being this ill and having to sleep on the ground outside under plastic in the rain with no meds, no water, no privacy and no dignity. Its shameful.

Mohammed Ghanem fled from an area near al-Shifa hospital in northern Gaza where he said more than 25 strikes occurred next to his house.
He said he came to al-Mawasi because "the Israeli army has been directing people here" but said the area was "neither humane nor safe".
He described seeing Israeli tanks less than a kilometre away and said there had been strikes on an area just 500 metres (1,640ft) from the humanitarian zone.

No ceasefire

Gazans still can't leave - still being bombed, shelled, starved, deprived of water & medical care, moved around like livestock, crammed into a tiny part of their own country

But not bad enough yet for US

What more has to happen?

To be fair @OuiOuiKitty some people do really like tunnels. Maybe there is some Cornish miner DNA in Gaza.

Other option involves a long apartheid history, but surely that is not possible?

Why do you think they went underground though? Which sounds more likely A. They just really like tunnels or B. Because there is an illegal blockade and Israel controls everything coming in and out of Gaza. Even when Gaza had an airport Israel controlled who used it. Are you seeing a pattern with Israel and their control issues yet?

You do your cause no favours by constantly denying the reality of life in Gaza under an illegal blockade. Constantly denying that Israel do any wrong. It is all documented, it's there for everyone to read about.

Israel won't allow building materials into Gaza and you expect them to magic up an airport. Get real.

Don’t think we are refusing the idea of Hamas having built several tunnels as using them. But the idea of spending money building an airport that will be destroyed not long after being built and that Gaza will not have any control over doesn’t make any sense at all. Of course they’re going to invest the cash on things that will benefit them long term.

Let me think of several ideas

  1. Many of those terror tunnels wer built by Israel.
  2. an airport it’s easier to be destroyed
  3. They’d have no control over the airport
  4. A tunnel can provide shelter in the event of a war (4 in the last 10 years)

which one do you like most

It’s amazing how it’s only infrastructure that Hamas can’t possibly build or fuel. Rockets, weapons of war, no problem.

Can you explain how you could build and run an airport in a tunnel?

I'm sure an airport would be the first thing to get bombed while mowing the lawn. It's not the kind of thing that can be hidden.
