Surely if you believe in a God and accountability, you will also believe in sanctity of life, rights of other people, but also be careful in what you say in the hope that your words and judgements will not go against you?

I really hope so- for our sake, to restore belief in our international laws. But, also for Israel’s sake, as it does need to redeem itself in the eyes of the world. They are not only loosing the moral ground - but due to this, also the propaganda war.

I was thinking what the world will think of Israel when the flighting finishes, when all of Gaza is flattened and there are nearly 2 million refugees driven from their homes in Gaza?

The younger generation have very different views towards Israel’s actions in Gaza to older generations, and they need to see a just solution going forward.

So the IDF have killed tens of thousands of Gazans (and counting). Not genocide.

The highest estimate for number of people Hamas killed on October 7th is 1200. And that IS genocide??!

Your middle paragraph applies to the Israeli government too.

Also, Israel is free, they haven't had land taken off them over many years and aren't currently being wiped out by a humanitarian crisis and relentless airstrikes.

There was genocide by Hamas.

One day, Hamas will be eradicated and the perpetrators will be tried for war crimes and the cheerleaders shamed.

@Happyvalleyfan I am really confused at the double standards of language on Palestine/Israel. Or rather not confused, because it's a propaganda war, but really disappointed. Let us tell us how it is, not a sanitised version of the truth dressed up in words that don't convey what really happened or put a better spin on it. BBC particularly bad.

The title is so ambiguous - I have felt MN have been very fair in allowing at times rigorous and contentious debate. However « shot« does not tell us that the poor 9 year old actually died. Wonder if KILLS would have been acceptable?

The video shows IDF pulling the 8 yo out of the way as they continue fighting.

This what is so sad, Israel knows how it feels to be victims of mass killing/genocide but then inflicts terrible collective punishment on the Palestinians.

Personally, i don't think its "genocide" & in any case, thats for a court to decide but it is very clear they have scant regard for the civilians caught up in this.

As i said earlier, its my belief they will force them to break through into Egypt & Israel will claim "Nothing to do with us" bit like they Hamas when a Israeli bomb wipes out a family.

Winter is coming, that part of the world can be v cold and wet, how many more will die before the West and in particular, the USA stops arming them?

@Katharineblum there will never be a two state solution, Israel have said as much. The settlements have been strategically positioned to ensure this is geographically impossible. Look up Daniella Weiss.
The only way forward is a one state, equality for ALL, where Palestinians can be free from oppression, murder and occupation.

Why are people on this thread still comparing the acts of a terrorist group to the acts of an army, and one of the most well funded armies in the world at that, which serves a democratically elected state?

It’s like saying: it’s ok for the police to rape and murder criminals, because those criminals also committed rape and murder.

I’m at my wits end. I have smart, previously kind, friends who have just left their brains and all human compassion / empathy behind after October 7th. I hope the world will open its eyes.

But thats not where we are at & the longer Israel kills innocent Palestinians, the less likely we are to reach this state of affairs, just imagine the world outcry if Russia was succeeding in doing this in Ukraine?

Looks to me like the IDF will try and push the Palestinians across the border into Egypt.... that will be, even without the bombing, a unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe, so the hard-line Govt in Israel have no intention of allowing the Palestinians to have a state anywhere near them..
